  1. Hi everyone, I'm a new LPN. Been working in LTC for 6 months but I would rather be working in a clinic (Dr's office). When I went into nursing, that is where I wanted to be but there were no jobs at the time so I had to accept a PT position in a nursing home. Now that I have 6 months experience and there seems to be clinic positions opening, I have been trying to get one. I have 2 problems: 1- Nobody will hire me because all I have is LTC experience. (even though they will hire a NEW grad with NO experience over me) 2- When I talk to friends that work in clinics; it seems they don't do a lot. They do vitals, injections and paperwork. No treatments, no assessments, no nursing judgement needed, etc. It seems so boring but I still want the M-F, no weekends, no holidays schedule. Should I continue to look for a clinic position? I'm getting frustrated because I've had 7 interviews for 4 positions and can't get any of them. Some are with my same facility and I think my DON is keeping me where I am d/t a nursing shortage on my unit. I can't even get into another facility though. (Also the other place doesn't pay as well as mine, and it's farther for me to drive). I really don't think it's my resume or interviewing technique. I have heard "the manager really liked you but there were other candidates with more experience". Any suggestions?
  2. Upstate (rural) NY New LPN ( LTC facility $13.75 base extra $1.75 eve shift extra $2.40 night shift extra $.40 weekends extra $1.00 if charge nurse My last job in LTC was simply $12.60 base with $2 Diff. for all but day shift.
  3. First off, I titled this post that way in order to get a response. I've posted before without a single answer. The statement "eat their young" is a common place saying in nursing so I thought it would catch people's eyes. Secondly I wrote this post as soon as I got home, hence no time right then to research other posts. I realize this BB has a lot to offer. I was upset, tired, and overwhelmed when I posted. The situation is obviously more complex then I can put into a couple paragraphs on here. My trainer is telling me I'm going great and I do feel like I need to get organized and into a "groove". But My first week working nights, little sleep, kids at home, husband, no paycheck yet, new unit/floor to me, not knowing the paperwork or the residents yet, not even knowing where supplies are or how to use them yet has all balled up into a big emotional mess for me. I'm getting ready to head to work tonight with plans to get organized, look up care plans for residents, ask many questions of my trainer, etc. Please excuse my emotional break down this AM, as I'm sure many of you have never had or have quickly forgotten how a new grad feels!
  4. I'm on my second week orienting in a nursing home on night shift. My first job out of school. Each day I feel more confident and I am doing more on my own....now I get CNA's snapping at me for asking questions about how pt's transfer, for not answering call bells in the middle of a med pass, and worst of all the RN supervisor snapped at me saying "you need to get your **** together". Why do nurses have to be so mean to new nurses? Maybe I'm just thin skinned but I bawled my eyes out all the way home this AM. :cry:I'm beginning to think being a nurse isn't for me. Maybe a nice quiet office nurse position would be better for me. Maybe I'm just exhausted and overwhelmed! Any suggestions?
  5. This sounds like the jobs I've been offered. I'm going to turn down a better paying job because they said orientation was 3 days; one of which in a classroom. I graduated in August and just received my license last week. There is no way I could do it alone in just 3 days. The other job offers (2) are giving me 2 weeks.
  6. Background: New LPN grad. Need FT due to husband on lay-off. Want to eventually go for RN with tuition help from employer. Have 2 kids that I need to be able to see. Choices: 1- PT(28hr/wk), with benefits(Insurance) and opportunity to pick up more hours, tuition reimbursement, less hourly wage, evening/night/weekends. Can eventually get FT days in a clinic (hopefully). 2- PT (16hr/wk), no benefits, opportunity to pick up more hours, tuition reimbursement, less hourly wage, night shift. 3- FT, Evening shift(2nd), every other weekend, benefits, NO tuition reimbursement, $3 more per hour. *note* can do job 1&2 together to get more hours. I've spoken to my family and friends for their opinion but hoping for more input:twocents:. THANKS:confused:
  7. Let me tell you what I did to make it financially through school. I have a husband who works and 2 kids in school. My husdand's check pays for house and his car payment. I am responsible for EVERYTHING else. So I got a part-time job while in school. It was hard and half way through I had to quit because it was too much. I also called all my utilities (phone, cable, internet, etc.) and got rid of any extras I could to lower my bills. Then we lived as cheaply as possible. No going out for dinners, free movies at the library, car pooling any chance I could, etc. It has been a very hard long year. My husband even got layed off from work. But we made it through. It's amazing how little money you can live on when you get used to it. If you can, and are willing, try to get some State Aid (i.e. food stamps, etc.) That may be hard for some people to do but I looked at it as "I have worked all my life and it is a temporary thing, so take advantage if you can". Good luck and I hope this helped.
  8. I passed and I have my license # on BON!:cheers::balloons::clphnds::tinkbll::heartbeat:heartbeat:heartbeat:redbeathe:redbeathe:loveya::redpinkhe
  9. i didn't think about the pencil thing, but my own children: katrina and shayla can never find pencils with their names on them:sniff:. my mother-in-law had to order them for christmas one year.
  10. All I can do is LMAO:D
  11. I've tried to register with PV and it just takes me to my activity page and I have to change my password. My quickresults will hopefully be available today. From what my friends say, it only took them 24 hours:yeah:.
  12. You can do it too. On the drive there I tried not to even think about the test. Then just took each question as it came. Good luck to you as well!!!!!!:redbeathe I have a good feeling about my results! Computer shut off at around 85 ?'s (I really wasn't paying attention. Last I looked it was at 80 and I only answered a few after that) I was able to narrow most answers down to 2 choices and take an educated guess. Had lots for teaching questions, and some lab value questions. My strategy was to eliminate the choices I knew were wrong. Studying some lab values these last couple of days really helped I think!?!?! Can't wait to get my "unofficial" results. Plan to go job hunting on Monday!
  13. I'm posting so I can get some prayers, break-a-legs, ya got um girl's. I take my exam tomorrow, been studying for over a month now (waiting for ATT) and now, the more I study, the worse I feel about it. So today is my day off before the BIG TEST.Trying to compose myself and RELAX! I'm just praying I'm ready and need your prayers too. Thanks so much for all these posts on here. Invaluable information on these boards!:redbeathe
  14. Hi everyone, I have a problem and hoping someone can help me. There is a LPN position that I am VERY interested in. I have already interviewed with the HR dept. for this organization so all I would need is an interview with the manager for this particular position. I applied online and emailed HR specifically about this position. AND a friend that works for this organization said that my name came up for the job. The problem is, I haven't been called for an interview yet and another classmate (who also applied) was called for an interview yesterday.(with the manager) What should I do? I've thought about calling HR in person or calling the manager in person. Would that be too pushy? I just don't understand why my name would be mentioned but I wouldn't get an interview:banghead: It seems that my classmates are getting a lot more interviews that I am and we are applying for the same jobs. I'm going to revamp my resume, but most places already have it. Please HELP!!!! I'm getting so frustrated:crying2:
  15. Well I'm not sure about the question you asked, BUT I wanted to warn you that paying by check (as I did also) takes twice as long to process and receive your ATT. I also had a program pay for the registration at Pearson Vue via certified check and snail mail. That was Sept. 14. I call Pearson Vue a couple times a week, and they still have no record of even receiving my paperwork. I've called place that sent the check and they say it has arrived but hasn't been cashed yet. Anyway..... 3-4 weeks to process check, another 3-4 weeks to receive ATT, then however long it takes to schedule a test date and get license. This is what i'm being told ever and ever again anyway. Hopefully you will have better luck!
  16. Oh, but I think I would have to have them put a stop payment on the check that was mailed out. This Monday will be 2 weeks since they mailed it, and PV said 3-4 weeks processing; I might as well wait I think. (As much as it is killing me to wait) But thanks for the info:yeah:
  17. I have a different view of this. I'm a month out of school, still waiting to my ATT letter to take my boards. I was salutatorian of my class. I've been applying and interviewing along with my classmates. Here's the thing..... I've never been asked @ interviews how my grades were, AND I'm not getting more interview then classmates. Actually I think the opposite is true (only had 2 interviews, where others have gotten 3-4). I'm thinking of taking salutatorian OFF my resume. In the end, we are all nurses whether u got an A or B. As long as u pass the board test your a nurse!
  18. When I called them yesterday, I asked the guy about going online and doing it with my credit card and refunding the other money and he said they don't give refunds either. I think I'm stuck. Do you know how long your classmate had to wait?
  19. I know most people register online with a credit card but I had a program willing to pay for my boards via check. I had to mail my registration in. It's been a week and 4 days now and Pearsonvue doesn't even have record of receiving it yet:banghead:. And according to the bank it hasn't been cashed yet either. I kinda made the man @ Pearsonvue MAD yesterday when I called him because I was asking so many questions. He told me 3-4 wks to process registration and another 3-4 wks to get my ATT. I'm wondering if anyone else paid by check and had to wait a LOOOOOONG time for ATT?
  20. I'm in a 10 month LPN program. Just finished 10 weeks, starting clinicals next week, hubby got laid off, I work on the weekends so NEVER have a day to myself, kids HATE not seeing me, grades are good but only with extreme effort on homework, things in the house are breaking down, Hubby's truck needs heater fixed, etc, etc..... I could go on forever! I think I'm getting overwhelmed with everything. Hubby and I are fighting worse then ever too. I think it's the stress. Any ideas to help me deal with everything before I run away and sign into a "looney bin"?
  21. I am in this very same boat and this is what I've decided to do..... -I'm not going to get ride of my gas guzzling Jeep that is paid for. I thought about it, but then I said --people think nothing of taking out a 10,000+ loan for a car. I will keep my good car and take out student loans to pay for school and living. At least the interest is lower and I will have my car for at least another 5 years. - I am also looking for a part time job that I can continue during my schooling. That should help off-set some of the bills. - I called all my utility companies and lowered my bills. Some I could only save $5-10 a month but it will add up. - I plan to utilize food pantry's for help with the grocery bill. - When I finish school I can get another part time job as a nurse or work some OT to pay off those loans faster. BTW, I am married, have 2 kids, mortgage, husband's truck payment, bills. I just thought " the $10-$13,000 is worth the money I will be making in the future." Good luck!
  22. I know when an interviewer shows you around the place, that's a good sign. They wouldn't bother wasting their time if they didn't like you. Good luck!
  23. Oh SUGAR! I've been planning this since around Christmas 2007 and now I'm told they may be canceling this Fall's class due to construction. Well hopefully they will start a class in spring and I wont have to wait too long. Also it's gives a chance to save more money. But still a bumber!!
  24. Stay positive! You and I are in very similar situations, But I still am working FT and wont quit until I'm ready to start school. So why do you need a job now? To get $$ for another car? Can you carpool to school? Perhaps someone will buy the junker that broke down on you, that would help. Even if it's pennies on the dollar. Good luck and keep us posted :=]
  25. This may be the wrong place to ask this BUT, I have a moderate case of scoliosis (25% to and 20% lower) and back hurts quit a bit. Do you think I can handle nursing? It always hurts my upper right side next to my shoulder blade. It's muscle spasm mostly. I've learned over the years how to stand, bend, lift, etc. for the least amount of pain. Just wondering what people thought:p
