I was recently accepted into a MSN program and am finding the task of securing a preceptor very daunting! I did not think it would be so hard, but I have not been able to find anyone with availability for the Fall 2014 semester! I was hoping that someone on the board was interested or knew someone who was interested in taking a student! I am currently enrolled in an Adult Health Nurse Practitioner program and need to find a preceptor (ANP, FNP, or MD) to complete 120 hours with!! I am located in the Huntington/Northport area. If anyone has any suggestions for me or has precepted with someone before who is willing to take students, I'd greatly appreciate it!!

I'm currently in the program if anyone has any questions. The schedule is about right just take out Ethical Frameworks which is no longer required and replace it with "Health Policy" 1 cr in Spring. The poster was right, don't panic before you know it it will be the end!

It doesn't matter - if you reapply a second time and are not qualified they are not going to let you in, I know a few people who applied twice and still weren't accepted. The first time my application wasn't even looked at because of a technicality regarding wrong dates posted on the website. Good luck

You should definitely not give up, yes Stony Brook is an extremely competitive program but the good thing about Stony Brook is that they do not look at grades alone - they look at a mix of GPA, reference letters,essay, pre-requisite grades, volunteer experience etc. Because you do not have all your pre-reqs done and are currently retaking some because of poor grades you may have a harder time getting in. I suggest doing what you can though, retake them, if you don't get in reapply next year! Always have a backup from another school because there are very limited slots. Good luck, don't be discouraged by others.

I didn't have much volunteer experience at all - I am sure it puts you at a great advantage if you have volunteer experience in the health care setting because it shows that you know what the nursing field is about. However, volunteering is way different.

I got my acceptance letter I believe in Mid December, it was definitely before Christmas, however I know there are some people who got their letters after Christmas. You definitely have a chance of getting in. Stony Brook doesn't look solely at GPA they really look at all factors including GPA, pre-reqs, reference letters, and your essay. My GPA was not stellar - I had a 3.6 overall GPA and my science pre-reqs were not a 4.0! Ofcourse the higher your grades are the better it looks, but I believe they look at all factors. Goodluck :)

I'm also currently in the SB nursing program, 1 year class :) Good luck everyone! My only advice is to make sure that you apply to more than one nursing program, apply for the two year program too! I was denied my first time around, so don't give up. They honestly do look at every aspect of you. There decision is not based solely on grades or previous majors. I think that being a well rounded, dedicated individual is the main thing they are looking for.

It does not matter. As long as you are a well rounded student. They look at essay, GPA, pre-reqs, and recommendations. I'm currently a student at Stony Brook and we have people who were English Majors to people who have master's in biology :)

I was accepted into a VERY competitive accelerated nursing program with a B+ in A&P 2, B in A&P1 and a B in Microbio and a C+ in Chemistry and A's in my two other science requirements. I put my ALL into every one of my classes, my school was just extremely difficult. My overall GPA was a 3.8 though. I had a great essay, great recs, and volunteered. As long as you try your hardest and have great accompanying documents you should be fine :) Don't freak, grades are really important but if you have the drive and show the want you will be okay.

You know I called the health center and they told me that I couldn't have my titers done there because I was not a student yet. Who knows!! If you look on solar system it says the classes are from June 29th to August 20th - I don't know if that is indicative of a break or if we start fall classes right away. I want to know about supplies toooo! And the scholarship - did you apply for the scholarship?? I Still haven't heard anything.

It was in the admission's packet, it has red on the side. If you can't find it let me know and I'll let you know what's on there. It's basically that you need malpractice insurance 1mil/3mil need to show positive titers for a few things need some extra shots if you haven't had them need health insurance or you can use the one the school provides :)

I was not immune to the bumps either! But they gave me the MMR right away not just the mumps part. Luckily I got it done in March and just had my blood redrawn now - it was such a pain in the butt b/c I don't have insurance and the blood work is so expensive! What a pain right!? I thought I was the only one going through that lol.

Did you guys see the post on the first page? "Summer Semester: Fundamentals of Nsg. - 10 credits Health Assessment - 4 Credits Perspectives in Nursing - 1 Credit Nutrition - 1 credit Medmath - 2 credits (I think) TOTAL - 18 credits PS. The do not panic, the fundamentals credits include clinical hours. Clinicals were 1 day per week for 12 hours - e.g. Sunday 7am to 7pm. I can't even remember the summer well, I think we had classes all day (Monday to Thursday) through 4 pm except 1 day to 6pm for Math." Although it isn't set in stone for us yet, atleast this is some indication! I wish that they would also give us a supply list for what scrubs/lab coats/shoes/ stethoscope etc we need so that we are not scrambling in the last week! Is everyone done w/ the "Admissions Checklist?" The titers are costing me an arm and a leg And also did anyone hear about the scholarship??

Suny Stony Brook and Suny Downstate offer the accelerated program w/o the msn portion.

The curriculum for A&P 1 really depends on your professor. We had to know all the foramen and fossas. As far as knowing anterior, lateral and superior, the main thing is knowing what they mean for example they will ask things like "True or False, the mandible is superior to the tibia" Obviously yes, because the jaw bone is "superior" above, the tibia. They will also ask if the ulna is lateral or anterior to the radius, things like that :) So just know what they mean and how the bones relate to eachother in that respect. Personally, right now I would just memorize the bones in preparation and learn something about muscles, perhaps look online to see if you can find muscle slides. Even a small thing like just memorizing the bones and foramen will greatly ease your load. Email your professor and ask what you can do in preparation too, they are usually more than willing to help an enthusiastic student.

Yes, SBU, Suffolk was a back up plan just incase I wasn't accepted into Stony Brook. I already have a BS degree, so with the one year Accelerated Program, I will finish with a second bachelor's degree in nursing :)

Yes I am in the accelerated program for this year :) Thanks! All the programs in NY are so competitive, it's just funny how a person can be a qualified applicant to one and not the other! Good example of not putting your eggs into one basket!! :)

Congrats! I applied to Suffolk Community as a back up incase I was not accepted into Stony Brook Accelerated Nursing Program, funny thing is I was accepted into Stony Brook's one year bachelor's program and rejected from Suffolk!! Congratulations!! :)

that is a generalization, the only difference is that people in the accelerated program already have their electives done and have proved through background information that they are able to put forth effort that is needed to take on a program at a faster pace. It does not mean that anyone thinks it can be "crammed" into one year, if anything, the people who design the programs know that the information can be done in one year. Whether you are qualified to be a nurse or not depends on the NCLEX exam, so if you can gather and retain all the information in one year, so be it - the questions aren't different.

Even though Stony Brook has it's own hospital, not all clinicals are in that hospital. My GPA was 3.6 for the accelerated BSN program, and I had no hospital experience, but great recs and a great essay :) Good luck!
