helping pts after del
I am a charge nurse on a postpartum unit. My nurses seem to have the idea that it is rediculous for a patient(c/s included) to ask for help doing things. They get upset if the patient calls for help to get out of bed or get their crying baby out of bassinet. They complain when she requests help in bathroom ect. Is it me or is this not part of our jobs?

where did compassion go?
I can see that when you are busy but the nurses i speak of may have only 2 patients and they feel like the patients is a bother when asking for help

where did compassion go?
Ok so I opened my mouth at work about how upsetting it is for me to see nurses treat patients with no compassion. I'm not talking about mistreating anyone but not being compassionate. ie not wanting to help the 2nd day post c-section get out of bed or help her put on new panties. Isn't it part of our job to help people recover the couple of days they are in the hospital. When they go home they are on their own. Now that i have brought it up to my boss she wants me to give an "in service" at our next staff meeting. Any Suggestions?

Why lvn's /lpn's should not work in labor and delivery
Some of our best l&d nurses are lvn's and in fact our most experienced nurse is an lvn and she orients all new nurses to l&d. I have my bsn and have worked in l&d for 8 years I still go to her with question ect.

delee suctioning
I work in a rural hospital we do about 400 deliveris a year. My question is about delee suctioning of newborns. It is common practice to delee all newborns orally and some nurses suction nasally too. What is everyone else doing. I have heard that it is unnecessary. I have quit using it all together and the babies do just as well.

fentanyl in labor
Fentanyl is the only pain medication we give to our laboring patients. We usually give 100mcg q1-2 hrs until 8-9 cm. If the patient becomes complete within an hour of a dose we give Narcan to the mother and have a vial ready for the baby if needed. In 8 years I have only had to use Narcan onthe baby twice.
