Any Spring 2009 Linfield Cohorts?
Of course! Don't stress yourself out. It will seem like you get everything at once, and that the instruction isn't clear. Here's the secret: No one else knows what they're doing either (Including half of the faculty):wink2: Seriously, take it ONE day at a time (or a week if you like some planning) and you'll be just fine. It IS a lot of stuff, but it is very manageable if you don't stress yourself out. It is not necessary to do any of the reading for 103, but DO the reading for 106. Take Ken's class. There's a lot more, but I can't think of them right now.... Any of you living on campus?

What are CNA's allowed to know? (HIPAA question)
I work as a CNA at a doctors office and have full access to all the charts in the clinic for our patients as well as their hospital charts (we send pts and our doc's to the neighboring hospital for procedures). For someone to tell me I couldn't look at their chart would be absolutely ridiculous and degrading. Perhaps it is different in a purely hospital setting, but I need to be able to look in their chart to provided adequate care and be two steps ahead of the doctor. Also, what would I do if the pt called with a question about their care? Would I have to tell the pt, "I'm sorry, I don't know what is going on because I can't look in your chart. You have to wait til the RN gets some time to call you back." That just seems crazy. On the other hand, looking in a family members (or anyones) chart just for curiosity IS a HIPPA violation, no matter what certification or lisence you hold. Edited to add: I find your statement: "I just feel they do not have the knowledge base to back up everything they look at AND they tend to gossip." VERY offensive. Many CNA's have an extensive knowledge base, and many are nursing students who want to learn more. Not JUST CNAs tend to gossip- almost everyone does and I find a blanket statement like that very stereotypical and off base.

The title of "nurse"
I tried looking up those numbers, and wasn't able to figure out what they are talking to. Could you clarify please?:nuke:
-
The title of "nurse"
That is how it is with my state- OR. Apparently my manager sees it all as the same. Very frusterating!!!!
-
The title of "nurse"
That's exactly what I thought... My manager's argument is that since I have a state issued lisence from the BON it's okay to refer to myself as a "nurse" even though it's a CNA lisence.
-
The title of "nurse"
When a pt calls and asks if I'm "his nurse" I always say, "No, I'm his CNA" a lot of times the pt's don't even blink an eye but every now and then one will ask to talk to a real nurse. I calmy and very nicely say, "Mr. Smith, I work with Dr. so-and-so very closely and know a lot about what he wants for your treatment... I'm sure I can help you." Generally, that works. If not, I transfer it to the RN.

The title of "nurse"
For the past year I have worked as a CNA at a specialty doctor's office. On a daily basis I room the pt's, take vitals, help the doctor in anyway he needs it, deal with a lot of insurance stuff, and take all the calls from my two doctor's pts. Typical clinic work. When pt's call I have noticed the receptionist's saying, "Well, let me get you to Dr. *****'s nurse." The day I heard her say it I said, "Hey, I'm not a nurse yet (I am currently in a BSN program), don't call me one" and my MANAGER said (who is a nurse) said, "Yes you are, you have a CNA lisence, you can call yourself a nurse." For some reason that stunned me. I just don't feel that being refered to as a nurse is okay since I am only a CNA. I don't even really like being refered to as "his assistant". What's wrong with "his CNA"?? So, my question to you is, am I over reacting?

Anyone Hear From Linfield?
I am on the 6th floor... I love it for the simple aspect that it's close to stumble home to, and it's so close to EVERYTHING. That, and my work is about a total of 6 blocks away. Couldn't ask for something better.

Anyone Hear From Linfield?
I'm here now... I moved in yesterday. I may have been able to move in early since I went to the McMinnville campus. I'm not in the accelerated program (I'm starting in the fall) but I work just a couple blocks away and you can't beat the rent here. :) Anyway, they're generally really flexable w/ move in/out dates. Give them a call.
-
Anyone Hear From Linfield?
yeah, I did. I will be there over the summer as well. Did you?
-
cna test?
I had to take a state test that was done by the Oregon State Board of Nursing

Hospital figures break time out of pay?
Right, but at the same time many states have stiffer laws on breaks/meals than what the federal law requires :wink2:

How do you find a job as a CNA w/ no experience?
My first CNA job was in a doctor's office. I didn't have any experience but I applied anyway, and ended up getting it really fast. My advice would be to apply anyway, and if given an interview really sell yourself. Say how good you did in school, ANY other health care experience you have... what your future has to hold etc. It's possibable, it just takes a while. Good luck! Let me know how it goes!

Swollen Ankles! Ouch!
I am currently working as a CNA in a doctor's office. I'm not super busy but am generally on my feet all day. By about two o'clock my ankles are swollen and somewhat painful. It only gets worse as the time goes on. I'm really nervous for when I start nursing school in the fall that the problem is only going to get worse, & more annoying. I have good shoes, danskos, but does any one have any ideas that would help? I've heard things about ted hose, but I'm not quite sure... THANKS!!!:heartbeat

A Poll: How many years did you wait?
I didn't wait any. I will have my BSN 4 years after I graduated highschool. I am kinda lucky though because I went to Linfield for my pre-reqs so getting into their nursing program wasn't an issue.

What class teaches all the medical terms and abbreviations?
I took my "Medical Terminoloy" course in high school. My school now has an optional "Medical Terminology" course that you can take as an elective. Honestly, I didn't really start memorizing the abbrevations and such until I started working in the doctors office as a CNA.
