  1. Try not to beat yourself up over it, learn from your mistakes. If something doesn't look right to you, go with your gut and look in to it. Ask Dr to confirm order, ask co nurse is this right? This doesn't look right to me.
  2. Yes I too have struggled with anxiety sense nursing school. Ms.piggy your story reminded me of my first flight when I thought the arm rest separating me and the guy sitting next to me was down. starting up into the sky, grabbed with both hands and squeezed on my right an arm rest, on my left the guy sitting next to me his leg. I realized at once what I had done but was so scared I couldn't let go. after we were up in the air I removed my hand and apologized profusely, he said hay No problem, but I was so embarrasses:uhoh21: I have had panic attacks and in general have anxiety, trouble sleeping ect... before and during most shifts I am quite anxious. I take xanax 0.5 mg two to three times a day. I try not to take it before work because it makes me sleepy, so usually vary anxious at work. I agree you should go see someone, its nothing to be ashamed of. It seems there are a lot of nurses that are in the same boat as we are, his alone makes me feel better.
  3. I worked at a Nursing home in which some nurses got upset because I took to many smoke breaks. In my defence I always informed the other nurse I was leaving the floor. I may go out 5 times in one shift to smoke. how long does it take to puff a quick one, 5 min. Some times I wouldn't even smoke a whole cigarette, smoke 1/2 and run back in. I don't take a lunch break so lets say worst case 5 smokes at 5 min at a time = 25 min. How is this any different from a 30 min lunch break. If the other nurse is on break I wouldn't leave. There were many that didn't mind, others did. The other nurse took 30 min lunch break. So I'm an adult and if I choose to split my break up in to tiny breaks why is this an issue. I know smoking is so not a good habit, and Its a choice, but that's the point, its my choice. does any one else see this as being inconsiderate to the other nurse.
  4. pet peeve: nursing home incontinent pt. in bed, diaper wet, sheets under diaper wet. you tell the CNA pt needs changed. Her response, well the pt is a heavy wetter, if I change her bed now it will just be soaked again next time I come in and I don't want to do two complete bed changes. You get paid to keep them clean and dry. would you like to lay in your own urine for hours? If you have to do it again later so be it, that's your job. Don't like it, quit and find a job that you are better suited for. No I really don't know where you can find a job where you can talk on the phone to your friends, stand around and gossip, read magazines, and eat all night sorry. catchphrase: @$ or get off the pot
  5. so what did you end up doing?
  6. good luck, and keep us posted.

OK, just started going to the county jail through an agency two months ago. I live in a large city. three times in these short two months during my med pass I hear hay I know you. All three times I did recognize them, but was hoping they wouldn't remember or recognize me. I don't know why but I feel like the officers are like oh look what kind of people she associates with. two of them had just lived in my neighborhood a while back. One was a friends brother. I don't know why it embarrasses me so much when this happens, but it does. Do you ever see people there that you know? how do you handle it? Am I the only one who is uncomfortable when this happens?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I just started agency myself. Mostly have been going to the county jail, I did two Nursing home shifts 3-11 and couldn't believe how hard it was. I hadn't finished my 5p meds and they went for dinner. They came back and I finished the 5 pm meds. The other nurse was done a lot quicker, and when It came time to do the 9p med pass she was charting, talking on the phone ect. When I was finished I was getting the treatment book out to start those. She says oh hunny you must be new at this, I should have told you on 3-11 we pass out all our meds at 5p, we give them all at once it saves time. she also said and if they have prns give them then too. then she laughed. I couldn't believe my ears. OK, that was my last shift at a nursing home doing agency. What in the world, has any one else seen this done?

  11. thanks, I see. Well wishing you luck on your waiver, keep your chin up
  12. :yeahthat: keep on, keeping on. dont let them get you down
  13. Hope you are feeling better, I know its easier said then done but try to relax. Pamper your self a little, you deserve it regardless of the outcome. Treat yourself to something nice. You have done all that you can, Its out of your hands now. Have you ever heard the song Jesus take the wheel? Its a country song. When ever I am in a situation like this I think of that song and it makes me feel better. any way, good luck to you.

On your nights off do you ever dream you are working. On several occasions I dream I am filling med cups, pouring liquids over and over, then I wake up and feel like I worked all night for no pay. Some times Ill dream I am giving a pt a wrong med and as they put it up to their mouth it goes in slow motion as I wave my arms and yell nooooooo. OK, am I alone here, or does anyone else work in their sleep? or have nightmares about work?
  16. I had an experience with a mail nurse. He had a desk job, doing what I'm not exactly sure. One night the other nurse didn't show up. That left me with 52 pts. and I called the supervisor and said cant you tell ill call him jack to take the no show nurses place. I mean he is an RN and she agreed. So he was mad he couldn't do his comfy desk job for one night. This was third shift and he worked this shift because he had had issues with day nurses. any who, he is passing meds and comes to me and says well this Lady's mars say she is to get the eye drops 4 times a day, but here under the opthamology in her chart it was changed to two times a day. I said then the doctor should have written an order and put it in the physician's order not under opthamology. He then went and got a medical error report and filled it out, then replied to me will I have to right out in this report that I counseled you on checking your mars for errors, just so you know. I was like, there were no orders in the mar or physicians orders to check, the doctor wrote a note in the opthamology seg, but no official order. I don't have time to search every chart, every section, every day for this. any how it was reported as a med error. I was not the only one giving it as ordered in the mar, but the one who got counseled and mentioned in the med error report. He was just pissed because he had to work the floor
  17. I never heard of this in NS, but There were CNAs going through the CNA class ran by my employer that were kicked out because they were pregnant, there were others that were in there early months of pregnancy that hid there pregnancy's until after the class. I didn't see how they could do that either but it occurred
  18. where I use to work on third shift, the aids were responsible for cleaning bed side tables, and drawers. The nurses were responsible for the nursing station, fridge, ect... and if there was a tube feed mess, hate those... I would clean it if I had time, if I didn't I would delegate it to my CNAs, they didn't like that much. If there was a clogged toilet, I would plunge. If there was an overflow the CNA would mop it. Usually around the time state was to arrive the DON would leave long list of things to be done.

thanks for the vote of confidence, and the pep talk. you don't know what it means to me, really. I admire all you RNs and soon to be RNs out there with such great assessment skills, and general knowledge. I am always so happy when they send me to the part of the jail where an RN is there willing to help and teach. There are only a few sections of the jail where you are the only nurse in that pod. But that's where I get sent sometimes. any way thanks so much.
  20. If even the slightest possibility you were stuck, first thing in the am, explain what happened. It is probably nothing, try not to worry. but just to be on the safe side, fill out proper forms and get tests necessary. until then try to be calm. let us know how it goes

Thanks, one job, one shift, yep sounds good to me. I am scheduled at the jail through the agency all next week, and of course they never put me in the same location of the jail twice and its like each section is a new facility. but after the first of the year I am going to find something consistent. I hate to admit defeat, but I am so tired of going to work with that sense of total panic.

I really want to find something at night like a 10-6 shift at a nursing home. I think that might be for the best. Most do 11-7, but who knows, if they are desperate they might compromise. Thanks so much for letting me know I am not alone feeling this way. I will have to wait until after the holidays, most places hold back checks a week or two. any way thanks for the input

is there any one else that feels this way? I really need some suggestions on how to get over this.

I have been an LPN for three and a half years. For the first three years I worked at a "Nursing home" that was more of a pscy. facility. I worked third shift. Now do to my husbands hours, he works sometimes from 6am to 6 or 7pm. We have a 18 month old and no day care at this time. I had no other option to go agency 2nd shift and work days he has off or days he is home by 2pm. They have mostly been sending me to the county jail, and a couple nursing homes. every time I go to a new place or encountered a new situation I am overwhelmed with anxiety. I often feel inadequate. I am scared to death, and therefor have avoided first shift, because of the high stress on first shift. I do take xanax for anxiety but don't take it at work because It makes me sleepy. The other day at the jail a 26 month pregnant woman was having contractions. I had only been there a few times and my experience with this is the 8 week clinical at school. I wound up calling one of the RNs from another area of the jail to help me. she did a great assessment, and called the Dr. she had no problem bailing me out, but I am so tired of feeling scared and incompetent. any suggestions in how to deal with this?
