  1. Hey!! I am actually graduating from nursing school in December and then heading to Africa Febraury 1 to do some volunteer nursing there for 6 weeks. I am going to the country right beside Zimbabwe called Zambia. I am going through an organization called African Impact. They have an awesome website that may have some of the info. you are looking for on it. If not then I know there is other websites that you can link to through this one. It is www.africanimpact.com. Hope this helps!!!!
  2. Hey! I'm currently in nursing school but was a CNA for a year and a half before starting school. I was a Patient Care Tech when I was hired and then after taking courses, such as Phlebotomy, ECG, CPR, Telemetry, etc., my title changed to a Certified Nurses Assistant. You are NOT allowed to give meds as a CNA or a PCT. Your pay does increase about 3 dollars per hour after becoming a CNA. It took me about 6 weeks to have my title changed. I worked at MUSC in Charleston, SC on a Cardiac step-down unit so the requirements might be a little different for you, depending on where you are going to work.
  3. Ok....wow. I'm sorry about that. Prolly was not a nice thing to do, you're definitely right, but was just trying to help.
  4. I am a 2nd semester BSN nursing student at MUSC. I have lived in Charleston now for 6 years - graduated from CofC in 2006, worked at MUSC for 1 1/2 as a CNA, and am now in school. That is so awesome that you are coming to Charleston. This place is amazing....I love it so much. I have had experience working at the various hospitals around the Charleston area through school. I personally would recommend MUSC (not just b/c I go there either)! Roper overall has very bitter employees, CMH is just a really gross place to work, St. Francis would be my second choice after MUSC. The cost of living here is pretty high. I don't know the exact numbers but you can type in "cost of living comparisons" into google and it will give you websites that will help. Good luck!!!!
  5. Hey everyone! So, I'm graduating in December from the accelerated BSN program at MUSC and am moving to Nashville, TN after I take my boards. If any of you work in Tennessee can you tell me how much the yearly salary is?? And, I want to work in the PICU right after graduation. I know that some nurses stick with the idea that you have to have a years worth of Med/Surg experience before you can successfully transition into an ICU setting. I personally don't believe that and want to know if that is a requirement for getting an ICU job in Nashville. Thanks!!!
  6. If you do decide to get an electronic stethescope, then make sure that you get it from a credible source. My mother bought my brother, who is graduating from medical school in a month, an electronic stethescope from what she thought was a credible website. She ended up paying about $400 for it. He got it a couple of weeks later and ended up not being able to hear any better. She was unable to return it b/c the website ended up being a little sketchy!!!! So...just make sure you get it from somewhere that has a return policy and things like that.
  7. Hey! Congrats on starting nursing school! I am finishing up my 2nd semester in the BSN accelerated program at MUSC. I have a Littman Cardiology stethescope that my father gave to me when he retired from being a family practitioner. It is a really good stethescope but I felt the same way when I first started. Just make sure that when you are trying to listen to something, the environment around you is as quiet as possible. Turn down the TV, tell people to be quiet, etc. Also, you won't really know how well your stethescope works until you actually know what you are listening for! Hope this helps! Good luck!
