  1. i took A&P with an awesome teacher! he makes it easy, and he teaches it so well. he is a MD too, i believe. he teaches A&P at the Chelsea campus. but be sure to register early for his section because it fills up quickly. There is also a very good teacher for Human Growth & Development.
  2. are you ready to work your tail off? i can't believe we have to read about 10 chapters for the first week! good luck.
  3. did any BHCC students get their books yet for the Fall 2008? how long did it take to receive them? did you order your books from amazon.com? i havn't ordered my books yet, and was wondering if i would get them in time. thanks.
  4. this is the 2007 NCLEX pass rate for MA by school: http://www.mass.gov/?pageID=eohhs2terminal&L=5&L0=Home&L1=Researcher&L2=Physical+Health+and+Treatment&L3=Nursing+Statistics&L4=National+Council+Licensure+Examinations+(NCLEX)+by+School&sid=Eeohhs2&b=terminalcontent&f=dph_quality_boards_nursing_r_nclex_07_perform_summary&csid=Eeohhs2 i got it from a thread on this board. https://allnurses.com/forums/f153/2007-nclex-pass-rate-school-312321.html
  5. NCLEX PASS RATE i saw that BHCC's pass rate was only 62% for the NCLEX. for some reason, i thought it was much higher. some other community colleges also had low pass rates. it looks like i will have to start studying for the NCLEX from the very beginning of the program in order to pass it with ease. i had no idea that the test was so hard to pass!
  6. UNIFORMS for BHCC today, i got my uniforms from the NH company that took our orders during orientation. i am a little disappointed. the polo shirt fabric is scratchy and mostly polyester. the pants are too small in the seat. the lab coat is too heavy. i'm really not going to be comfortable wearing these clothes for clinicals, and would like to find substitutes that are better made. can i just go to a local uniform shop around boston and buy substitutes, or am i required to buy uniforms only from this NH company? of course i would return the stuff from NH. thanks.
  7. i have not heard from our clinical teacher yet. i wanted to email her, and ask her about the book list, because some of the dates/editions do not match up ... unless new editions are scheduled to be released this summer. i am afraid that i will buy the wrong book. and since i am ordering them from amazon.com, it will be difficult to return them. what are you doing about your books spudbunny? when do we have to pay the $450 for the ATI site?
  8. i am counting on the job market changing by the time i graduate (hopefully for the better).
  9. it never occurred to me that anyone would hire me for just a couple shifts a month. i could probably manage that. how would i look into it? thanks.
  10. is it just grads with AS degrees (RN's) who have trouble finding a job, or do grads with BSN degrees (4 years) also have trouble finding a job? i start nursing school this fall (2 year RN program). i have a young child, so i can't work while in school. i have no medical experience. what can i do to increase my odds of getting a job after graduation? someone mentioned externships? are those paid? i can probably manage a few hours a week as a hospital volunteer. would that help me get a job after graduation? i don't have the money to take a CNA class (they cost $800+ here).
  11. the orientation went well, although they did not mention that one third of the students fail out!!! interesting. are you going to buy all the books on the reading list (9+ books, right?) i have heard that it's not necessary to buy all of the books on that list. if you know people already in the program, can you ask them about the reading list (ie. do we need to buy all those books)? and what about the $450 ATI testing software fee! wow! i thought my inheritance was going to pay for nursing school, but it looks like it will only pay for half of it, with all these extra expenses that i did not anticipate .... such as the "high-cost course fee" added to my tuition bill (that alone added $350 to the regular fees/tuition). still BHCC is the best deal around when it comes to getting a nursing education. i was surprised at how many older students there were -- i think half the group was over 35 - so i will have lots of company. i also thought my weight might be a problem, but i saw many students who were much heavier than me ... so apparently the clinicals are not that physically demanding? i liked my clinical instructor! she seemed very nice.
  12. can anyone advise me on the best way to prepare for nursing school this fall? i was accepted into a part-time RN program. i would like to start studying over the summer, so things will be a little easier for me when school starts in september. someone suggested that i learn the 20 most commonly used drugs. what else should i study? should i volunteer at a local hospital? thanks.
  13. how did you turn in your acceptance letters? did you give it to donna in person, or did you just drop it off at the admissions office? i just dropped mine off and left it with someone in the admissions office.
  14. go to: http://www.cprboston.org/ click on "Programs at Carney Hospital." they have 4 CPR classes a month ... although it does not say "healthcare provider" level, so i need to call them to verify that it is an advanced CPR class.
  15. i received a REVISED letter today from the BHCC Admissions Office telling me that i needed to complete a CPR certification (for healthcare providers) before the beginning of the fall semester. i have no idea where to go for such training. i live in east boston. can anyone point me in the right direction? thanks.
  16. i know someone who got in with an 80 on the TEAS. and i have heard of someone who got in with a score in the 70's on the TEAS. so i think BHCC considers other factors besides the TEAS score. RuseRN, i would not contact the dean about your application. they might find that too pushy. you can talk to the admissions office though.
  17. blessed, i was not aware that the weekend program runs thru the summer months ... even though i applied to it. what classes do we have to take in the summer months? i went to the BHCC nursing web site, and i did not see anything about summer courses. thanks.
  18. hi spudbunny, congrat's on getting in! i think med-surg is the second semester of the first year. does the weekend program take 2 years, or 2.5 years to complete?
  19. i heard that one third of the BHCC nursing students drop out after taking MED SURG. apparently that course is really hard to pass. so i plan to start studying for it early. i don't want to be one of the dropouts.
  20. i got accepted into the weekend program! i am so relieved.
  21. now i see why i did not get into LMH/Regis RN program -- i assume they held my undergraduate grades against me, even though that was 26 years ago! seems kinda unfair, when my GPA for my nursing prerequisites was a 3.9. i never bothered to reapply to their program because i did not want to come up with 3 new references.
  22. my plan B is to go to UMASS, although i have no way to pay for it, and i can't take out anymore student loans. i am hoping to get scholarships if i go there. i didn't get into Regis, even with a 3.9 GPA, so i'm not too optimistic about getting into BHCC either. i know someone in the BHCC program now, and she told me that it really helps a lot if you are a minority, male, or an older student. i am a 30-ish white female, so i think the odds are against me for that reason alone.
  23. hi blessed, i took statistics in the CSDL (center for self-directed learning) at BHCC last semester. i am glad that i did it as a self paced class, although i did find it a difficult subject to learn. plus the statistics teacher in the CDSL does not speak english as his first language, so he's a little difficult to understand ... although i think he is perfectly adequate as a teacher. i applied for the weekend program, followed by the day program. they told me i would double my odds if i applied to more than one program. i am taking spanish this summer (web based class) at BHCC. i am taking everything that i can at BHCC that will transfer to UMASS just in case i don't get into the BHCC program. i applied to Regis last year, but i did not get in, even with a 3.9 GPA. i got a 91 average on the TEAS, so i hope i get into BHCC. good luck!
  24. i just called BHCC to see when the acceptance/rejection letters go out, and they told me that the admissions board has not even met yet to review the applications. she said it would take 2 to 3 more weeks before we have an answer.
  25. does the UMASS Boston RN-BSN online program have a language requirement? i am taking spanish this summer.
