Is nursing for me?
I have longed to be a nurse for quite a while. I struggled to get in, like many others have. I worked as a CNA (hence the name), so I thought I understood the role of a nurse from observing my former RN/LPN co-workers. Boy was I ever wrong. I am really starting to worder if I am cut out for this profession. I feel I may get burnt out on the profession shortly after graduation. I am in my third clinical rotation in an accelerated program. Can anyone share how they determined that nursing was indeed for them? I am so frazzled that I am 25 years old, and I still dont have my life figured out. I would really appreciate any soul-searching tips, books, stories, anything.

changing major from nursing to english lit?
Follow your heart, even if that means giving up the parental help and taking out student loans. You won't regret it. College is all about personal growth, and it seems you have found yourself in English lit. Be proud!!

Opinions on Kaplan...
Kaplan lacks NLN accreditation, but it does have state accreditation (thus nothing transfers), and has a horrible pass rate. It would wind up costing you much more for your education if you get your LPN at Kaplan. If you have all you pre-reqs completed, my guess is that you are close to having enough credits for a AS in something. If you have already been rejected from UNMC, I would get an AS from a CC, then apply to Nebraska Methodist College for the ACE program, which costs 28k. Another option is the Clarkson two-year progam. Its still pricey, but a much better way to achieve your long-term goals. Whoa, shoot! I just realized you must be in Lincoln! But seriously, just come to the Big O to become a Nurse if you don't have family obligations.

It is me or them!!! I can't stand it anymore!
Have you ever worked as a CNA? Perhaps they have too much to do. They aren't superhuman. I work my tail off, and it is never enough.

PhD REQUIRED for CRNA's?
I don't see how this is possible, since a PhD is a research degree. Perhaps you mean a clinical doctorate? It seems possible, since that is the direction NP is going.

Can anyone suggest a drug calculation book?
I would like to brush up on my nursing-related math skills before I start NS. Can anyone suggest a book for self-study?

Huge Sign On Bonuses - Is there a catch?
Where is this hospital that offers a 25k sign-on bonus? I'm taking out lots of loans, and will gladly work in a hell-hole, if it means I can get rid of the debt I am building up! Money doesn't buy happines, but it does buy security.

Any previous applicants to medical school now pursuing CRNA school??
Actually, I've seen more the other way around (pre-nursing rejects applying and getting accepted to medical schools).

Do most students have healthcare experience before nursing school?
Just wondering. Do most students jump in cold turkey, or get experience first? I am a CNA and pre-nursing student, but I was wondering which is more common.

Writing a research paper on nursing specialties...
That doesn't sound like research, that sounds like something you would write for a seminar class. A research paper is something verifiable and objective. I would select a research topic that doesn't require personal opinion if you care about your grade on a research paper. I'm not trying to be a booger, I'm trying to help a fellow pre-nursing student.

how volunteer abroad
Ok, this is not even remotely related to nursing, but does anyone know of an agency that will allow you to volunteer abroad for, w/o a long-term commitment like the Peace Corps? Something 2-6 weeks in duration, and relatively affordable would be ideal. I would prefer something that would allow me to do some health education, or something else related to health, but any opportunity would be awesome. Any suggestions? Thanks.

MRSA/Urine
I had a similar experience in LTC, but I am not at liberty to comment on the correctness of the practice, as I am only a CNA. Our resident had MRSA in her urine. The only precautions were "good handwashing." Standard percautions were apparently enough. Excuse me!? What about the poor roomate? Roomate passed away six weeks later from something apparently unrelated.

I have a SON interview!!
I have an inteview scheduled with my top-choice nursing school. Can anyone help me prepare by telling me what questions they typically ask during these interviews?

Making the beds
The CNA's, or certified nursing assistants handle the majority of the bedmaking and simple tasks. CNA's aren't nurses, but cerified assistant personal. Housekeeping handles the heavier cleaning. In some facilities, nurses at both the LPN and RN level would be responsible for that.

Any midwives in Omaha??
I can't help you with the mid-wife question, but I can tell you that all of the nursing schools in Omaha are really high quality. If you already have your pre-reqs out of the way, you should look into University of Nebraska Medical Center, and Clarkson College. Clarkson is a bit pricey (5k/ sem), but they offer a discount if you work at the Nebraska Medical Center. Creighton is another option. Nebraska Methodist allows you to apply to their accelerated program with only an AA degree. In my opinion, you would get the highest quality of education at UNMC. Clarkson is a close second. All of these programs offer MSN degrees, but I am not aware of any midwifery programs. There is also College of Saint Mary, Iowa Western, and Metro Community College, but these are all ADN programs. Stay away from Kaplan!!

What does an RN do in pre-hospital EMS?
I'm just curious. What exactly do flight nurses/ EMS nurses do? How does the job differ from that of an EMT-P? What is the benifit of having an RN rather than and EMT-P in EMS transport?
