Unsafe Med pass??
Hey folks, I worked a shift at a local Jail for a Agency to make a few extra dollars as work at my reg 9-5 job has been slow... It was a max security county jail that has at least 600-700 inmates at all times. The first thing I noticed that I thought was insane was on the overnite shift they had 1 RN on no PA NO NP just 1 SINGLE RN for well over 600 people ages 16-100....yes they have a 100 year old inmate... Any ways they said " help us do a med pass" well the med pass is taking a cart packed with every drug you could possibly name... {Picture pushing a WalGreens store room around on a 4 wheel cart because that was what this was}. And I literally had to give meds to over 600 inmates and they wanted it done in 2 hours. Good grief not only was I deeply sad over the amount of 16 year old boys in there yes here 16 year olds go right to adult jail no seperation from the 40 year old predators at all.. but the med pass was just insanity I can only hope I didn't make any mistakes as often the MAR name and the med package name did not match for example on the MAR brand name but med packet Generic name. plus I was under constant pressure from the deputies to just toss there meds in a cup and throw it at the idiots.. not literally put they did pressure me to go fast... now Mind you some inmates got well over 8-9 meds at one time. I feel so bad for these Nurses who do this on a daily basis. You talk about Understaffed what the Jails are enduring is beyond what any Nurse should be put under.

well I would like to be able to not work ina hospital period sadly everyone wants you to work ina hospital for a year.... I am not stupid I worked hard and long to get My "RN" maybe I should not feel so bad this last floor wanted me to have 10-12 patients at one time anyways... sigh.,... I've had over 7 pts per 12 hour shift... good luck trying to provide good safe competent nursing care... did you know my trainer told me you don't have to listen to each pts lungs each day if they can talk thats good enough? and oh yea get this because of the new changes in medicare from now on they wanted me to document any red area on a pt as a deep tissue injury.. but thats not a deep tissue injury how do you know that? I asked hush mark if you don't document that way we don't get paid now deep tissue injury you understand us.

union pro or con
hey chloe I am on a cardiac floor So I suppose tele- cardio is my area but have lots of general med pts also. I would love to be a surgical nurse but that seems harder to get into for whatever reason. If I can't do that in a while then I will eventually look for a non hospital nursing job I think
-
union pro or con
hey chloe I am working in Buffalo but am Rochester raised.
-
union pro or con
does your hospital have a union for the nurses? if so has it helped or not? why do nurses constantly eat each other rather than say have a more powerful labor voice when dealing with all these health care systems or merged hospitals which really means big corporations concerned with one thing there bottom line not your wages. Don't you think it is sad that in most places in the USA a RN makes less than a dental hygenist.... heck in upstate NY my Hygenist makes over 30 bucks a hour and she started at 29 dollars a hour far more than what a starting RN will make here.
-
What's harder? NS or your first job as new RN?
is your first job easier than nursing school?-- no would I have chosen something different? possibly dpt,dc, or OD come to mind

"Big Money"
Nursing is not big money I quess it depends.. to me If they offered me a job making about 50- 60 an hour that would be good money but if you really break things down 60 bucks a hour is about 112,000 a year in todays world that is not really "big money" Many Police officers earn that easy it is sad that as RN's there are very few jobs that even come close to paying that.

any one taking this supplement? I take that along with a green tea extract each day. I had a bp of 100/62 last time I got a checkup which was even lower than before MY MD was like gee your bp is lower every time I see you whatever your up to keep it up.

Any RNs that are fitness instructors?
I am I teach spin classes have CSCS and CPT certifications.
-
your favorite way to stay in shape
me I am a gym rat and do about 50 minutes of cardio each time. I am also a certified trainer, a cscs, and teach spin classes 3 times a week at my gym. I have about 10-30 students in each class on a regular basis and I have them spin for 50 minutes with a 10 minute cool down time. my favorite cardio machines right now are the cybex arc trainer and the precor 100i and elliptical. If I was rich one day I would open the ultimate gym at least 30,000 sguare feet of the best equipment and class space money could buy. I would make a gym that the members love and update the equipment on a regular basis not buy something and let it sit for years like many gyms do.

About the little pocket license you get :)
in New York I have card just like my Driver license from the office of professions that has the state seal and says Registered Nurse and my license number on it.

When people say they are nurses but not...
Be very careful about giving others health advice... when a pts family asks me how is so and so doing? The first words I say are has the MD/Resident whoever is covering that pt been in to speak with you? the next thing I say is if they answer no is let me find them and let them know you need to speak with them. It may be not the immediate answer the family is looking for but I as The Nurse am not going to give any family member a prognosis on the pt... we had a case on our floor where family members were recording with digital recorders everything the nurses said. Sadly we live ina sue happy world and because of that you really need to watch what you say. Medical advice let the MD who is making way more money than you give that out.
-
Has anyone failed a test? I need some encouragement!
my advice let it go... You do not have to be a A student that is not what makes a good nurse. I "failed" a test and got real upset untill I embraced the concept that I do not need to have the best grade in class anymore. Quess what there is no gpa listed on my RN license. That does not mean do not study hard you study your heart out and shoot for the A always. but hey if you get by nursing school and walk out with C's noone will know or care. trust me once school is over-- The "wonderful world" of Nursing awaits and yea I say that with sarcasm a bit as I am a new Nurse and let's just say school and what your going to face after grad.. exams are the least of what I would get upset about. school is tough.... dealing with pts 12 hours a day that is where you reallyyyyy have to do those count to 3 exercises and bridle your tongue. sadly you often also have to watch what you say to co workers as well. med surg nursing is so great I can't wait to leave it lol.... sorry not trying to burst a new students expectations you'll see soon enough...

Male Nurses/female Patients
If a female asks for a lady then thats what I will get for them.
-
are they supposed to know this by now?
now you would make a great teacher. Teaching is a gift that sadly many nurses do not have. I for one would rather teach a student something rather than say work in the Icu and say hey my pt was on these drips and this and that and Yup you can tell I will never work in a ICU it just does not speak to me at all as my teachers would say

surgical nursing
ok I have a question for you surgical nurses. I would love to work in the OR but I went to a interview and the nurse manager said well You dont fit for our unit I quess. I was told well maybe if you keep working and get more experience. now why Do you need a year of med surg nursing to do surgical nursing. I am so tired of you need a year of experience for this or that or anything. What if you really do not like med surg nursing lol. I swear I would take a job teaching Emt's or Paramedics for 8 bucks a hour less If it was out there. I am a new nurse and I'm sick of the nurses eat there young crap already. Nurses wonder why we don't get paid better I can name at least 20 reasons and I've only been a new grad since dec. yahoo so after I get this magical experience I'll know everything there is to know about nursing right sureeeeeeee right. Is there something magical about having 7 0r 8 patients that nurses love to say see look what I can do I can handle 12 pts at once. to me thats not a feat it's kind of insane really. You can only really take care of about 4 people at once all the good nurses know that. in facT I was just reading that if your nurse has 7 pts your chance of dieing in The hospital goes up by 41 per cent. And why would you want more stress? I was talking with a nurse who was like oooo yea I wanna do ICU n this n flight nursing hehehehe thats all well n good but to me I quess After working on a tele floor that just does not seem to be a goal of mine anymore. I love the kind of pt who walks in gets assessed for something treated and gone d/c the same day if possible. I am sure others like seeing the same person day in and day out over and over again. That way you get to know them there family ect ect.. Trust me I can learn enough about my pt in a few hours I quess I like the in and out faster pace type of unit. Some say well that's more like a factory job of nursing and perhaps it is. sorry for the vent and sorry if I made typing mistakes its late and I am over tired I quess.:typing

How much $$$ do you get after taxes?
yikesssssss many people say upstate NY is ina down trend but for 1900 a month in buffalo or Rochester you could live in a huge home in the suburbs witha pool maybe even your own maid/butler.
