Tarrant County College students out there?
Hi! When does the Mental Health section start and how long does it last? I'm trying to get an idea of what my summer will look like next year!

Nursing: I'm just not that into it!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this post and the responses! I will be starting nursing school in January and the ONLY thing I am worried about is the "gross" stuff! I just don't know HOW on earth I will handle it?!?!?!? Both my mom and my sister are nurses and they just tell me "you'll get used to it". So I am trying to believe them.... but it's difficult. A friend of mine has a sister that passed out and threw up in nursing school all the time! But she just kept going back. She didn't give up. So I agree with Parade! If I can just make it through nursing school, the opportunities are endless!!!! I can do anything! And I look around and see people who are nurses... and think if they did it, so can I.

TCC Spring '09 applicants?
Yes, I just finished last week! How about you? I'm not sure yet what I'll do in the fall. Maybe take Spanish... and something fun like Yoga or Pilates.

TCC Spring '09 applicants?
Hola! Do ya' mean who is applying IN the spring??? Or who is applying in the fall to START in the spring? I think we're getting a mix of answers here! I will be applying in the fall! I applied this past spring but didn't get accepted because I hadn't finished A&P II or Micro yet. But that's ok with me... because I'm in noooooo hurry! :chair:

Micro at TCC
I 2nd Lindsey! I have my final with her on Monday and it's been a good class.
-
Crushed
I second that! And don't give up. Even though Micro is also not "required" (nor is A&P II) for where I applied, there are just SO many applicants who have all of their classes completed that without it, there's almost NO chance of getting in. It seems that completing ALL of the pre-requisites, and then having to "wait it out" a semester seems to be the norm. I will be done with ALL of my classes in 4 weeks, yet won't be able to start nursing school until January. Hang in there! And try again in the fall! That's what I am going to do.

TCC Fall 2008 Applicants
Letters came today! I didn't get in... but no big surprise. I am taking A&P II and Micro this semester as well, so I'll be set for the fall. :nuke:

Microbiology Unknown Project
I just got home from lab & my teacher was very helpful. Actually about 1/2 of the class was still in there stuggling (not just me!!!). She knew that we were running out of time & told us what to inoculate next. I will go to a different lab on Friday so I can read the results & see what to do next. Yahoo! I have a gram negative rod so the info provided in this post is a great help. Thanks everyone.

Microbiology Unknown Project
Thanks for the info! When I go to school this evening I will get the notes from someone in my class. Maybe this won't be as bad as I think! I just feel pressed for time. We don't have partners & we have 2 unknowns! At least I already have one identified, but it was an easy one!!!!

Microbiology Unknown Project
OH thank you!!! I appreciate it!! This teacher just gets somewhat "snippy" and "snappy" at times ...... we never know if she's going to be in a good mood or not!

Microbiology Unknown Project
No, she didn't give us a chart. That's why I feel lost & overwhelmed! That with the added stress of being so far behind schedule already. All I know is that it will be a Gram negative and I have to do a gram stain tomorrow to see if it's a rod or coccus. That's all I know so far!! I feel so unprepared & I have an A in the class so it's not like I haven't been paying attention!!! I know there are different tests to do but I'm just having trouble getting a clear picture in my head of what steps to take. Maybe the teacher will help me out a bit...... we shall see.

Anyone take Microbiology and A&P 2 same semester?
I'm taking both of them this semester & it IS a lot of work. However, I don't have kids & only work weekends so I have ALL week to focus on the classes. I definitely need it! It's difficult, but can be done. So far I am maintaining A's in both. :nuke:

Microbiology Unknown Project
Can I just say UGGGGG? We are 1/2 way through the project, and I *thought* I had mine identified. Well now it appears that one of mine was contaminated and I have to start all over!!!!! A lot of people in my lab are already done! I, on the other hand, have to go to an extra lab this week to try & catch up! Not only that, when the instructor was writing various notes on the boards this last week (ie. if it's Gram - , do this.... Gram +, etc.) I didn't copy any of that down because I didn't think I'd need it! If anyone knows of any good websites with flow charts or helpful tips, that would be great! I am going to sit down now and make notes from our lab book of the different tests & results, etc. I just hope the rest of this week goes smoothly! I was SO disappointed after class this evening.

TCC Fall 2008 Applicants
Here's a link to their nursing info: http://www.tccd.edu/neutral/divisiondepartmentpage.asp?PageKey=121&menu=3& The next deadline will be in the fall for Spring 2009. They accept students every fall & spring semester. Approximately 400 apply and 100 are accepted. You will need to have most (if not all) of the pre-requisites completed to be accepted into the program. The classes are held on the south campus, but you can take the pre-req's at any campus.

When Will Life Happen??
I was complaining to hubby one day that I "don't have a life" (since starting school) and ya' know what he told me? School IS your life! Your life right now is to be a student! So true. :) So life is happening right now. And believe me, marriage & kids can wait!!!! I married the first time in my early 20's..... luckily didn't have any children because we were divorced when I was 27. I am now 34, applying to nursing school (will graduate in 2010) and maybe THEN I will start a family! It's never too late. I know I'm waiting a LOT longer than some people will even consider and that's ok. To each their own... Just know that there is NO hurry & focus on school right now & the rest will fall into place! Time flies & you'll be in your 30's before you know it. LOL I know it seems "so old" & sooooooo far away to you.... but let me tell you how much things will CHANGE for you over the next 10 years..... So don't worry! Everything will fall into place in time. Who cares what everyone else is doing..... I know a lot of my friends have kids that are almost out of high school & I haven't even started yet! Yikes But that's ok because we all do things differently & one way isn't "better" than another way. But just remember that it will be easier to start a family when you have a solid career under your belt!

TCC Fall 2008 Applicants
Yep, I got mine in!!! But no stress here.... because I'm 99.99999% sure that I won't get in this time. LOL My sciences aren't done yet but I wanted to apply anyways.... just because I CAN. (Woo hooo!) At least now my TEAS & everything are out of the way so when I reapply again in the fall, I won't have much to do!!! Good luck to the rest of you!! :)

Help !!! Teas test results
It is going to vary by school & how competitive it is, but it was said at the info session for my school last week that 70's & 80's were good. We have 400+ students applying for 100 positions every semester. They also said that the science portion counts more.
-
TCC Fall 2008 Applicants
I wouldn't sweat it either! In the info session today they said that 70's & 80's were good scores for the TEAS. They also said that the science classes were weighted more than the TEAS test score. Does anyone know if people have been accepted without having all of their pre-req's done? How about if they don't have their sciences completed? Also.... looks like the results should be out in April! Everyone who is accepted has to go to an all day class on May 2nd.... so they have to send out notices before then.
-
Science Teas Test
Yep! Same here. 30 questions in all with maybe 5 in Anatomy. I'd say a few more than that in Chemistry. Then there were some general science ?'s ~ like someone else mentioned ~ similiar to what you might have had in 7th or 8th grade!!! Those are the ones I did the worst on!
-
Teas Test
I just went to an information session at my school & they said you could only take the TEAS test twice! And they said that if you happen to do worse the 2nd time.... they will take your most recent score no matter what it is! So those of you thinking of taking a test "just to see what it's like", or taking it a 2nd time next month...... be certain you are prepared because you don't want to waste any chances! Has anyone else heard this? (That you can only take it 2 x's.... PERIOD). ????
-
Science Teas Test
i just took it today! all of the tests will be a little different, but i didn't have any strange graphs. the study guide helped. also, having just had a&p i and chemistry last semester helped too. it wasn't too bad & only about 30 science questions! good luck!

TCC Fall 2008 Applicants
I am going to the information session tomorrow! Sounds like you just have to accept your spot when the letters come out in May and then you're set!

age ?
34 I am taking my last 2 pre-req's now. I have a BS degree (from '95) so when I decided to go back to school I had to take 6 pre-req's. :)
-
What path should I take?
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration & I hate debt too. I chose the Community College route & it will cost approx $10,000. The school has a great reputation in the area, I will get my ADN & become an RN...... BUT not until 2010! The nursing program is a 2 year program, but ..... I was missing 6 pre-req's. So I took A&PI, Chem, Psych & PE last semester and will be taking A&PII and Micro beginning next week. So this entire nursing experience will take me about 3 years. You say you can't stand the thought of waiting that long, so if I were you, I'd check into an advanced BSN route. I don't have a lot of info since this isn't the route I chose, but I think you could be done in 18 (or so) months? It will cost more, but you can apply for scholarships & take out a loan. I want to pursue my BSN or MSN later, but I plan on finding an employer with tuition assistance/reimbursement. Since I already have a bachelors, I don't know if that means I can/should skip the BSN route & jump straight to MSN? Or would I have to have most of the classses from the BSN degree anyways..... For anyone who is reading this that happens to know~ can a person jump straight from a Bachelor's degree (in anything~not nursing & not currently an RN) to the MSN program? How long would that take? Maybe that would be a route you could take.... it might be a little longer than the advanced BSN program, but worth it in the end? How far do you want to go with your nursing career & how long do you want to go to school? Thinking about these things may help you decide.
