Wow, I can't complain about my HH job anymore after reading these posts! I live in N Cali (bay area); make fifty bucks an hr with IRS mileage, full benefits, a couple nights call per week (my choice). I could make more if I choose to go back to the hospitals but this works for me after almost 30 years on the job.

What a great idea! I just googled flu shot clinic jobs today and filled out an app for one company; then I started thinking about all of the places I could market a flu shot clinic....there were quite a few. I cannot answer your question but I am going to start my research. What part of Cali do you live? I am in the SF Bay area. Let's stay in touch.

Me too! Although our hours are 8-5, I am up having coffee, doing paperwork, calling MD's, other disciplines, etc and then call my patients to set up my visits and start them around 11am. Once a week for team conf, I am in the office at 830 am. Otherwise, I am having my coffee and making phone calls btw 8-10. If I do have some fasting labs to do, I will run out and do them and then come back home to plan my day out.

I am in the Bay area and get 63 per visit. Extra 35 for an admit. If I were you I would talke to another diff agency in LA to compare because that 45 per visit sounds kind of low.

I use a cheat sheet also! 2 columns with those most forgotten questions...ie dentures, religion, pharmcy numbers, emergency contact, ht and wt, immunizations/screenings,last bowel movement; self care deficits, the diet the pt states that they are on; equipment in the home. The other half of the sheet is my assessment findings; vitals/wound measurements, etc. I photocopy these sheets yellow so that they stand out from my other papers. I then refer to this sheet when I am inputting my info into the laptop....(I use my laptop during the visit to enter meds only and use my yellow sheet for all the other stuff. Otherwise, I find that I am focusing on my laptop and decreasing the effectiveness of bonding/developing trust with my patient) I am also thinking about developing a quick check off form for teaching since our agency wants us to document teaching 2 things per visit. This way I can look at what I have left to instruct. (Our company doesn't utilize the computer program's function for this)

OMG! Maybe it's because I'm old and been in this biz for a long time, but I cannot carry a large bag. I have a nice Hopkins bag with compartments galore theat I keep in my trunk. A small dickies bag (slightly larger than a fanny pack) is what I take into the pt's home. Holds my bp cuff, steth, thermometer/covers. alcohol swabs, pulsox, and gloves. laptop stays in the car....if I need dressing supplies, I pack them out of my trunk into a grocery store bag. Red lunch bag thing for labs. Hemesense machine if needed for the visit. I also have a large tote bag for my charts that I also leave in the car.

Seems to me, that as a case manager, you should have more control over your schedule; giving away patients of your choice. why are yours being given away, and then you are expected to see someone else's patients? make no sense to me. I would talk to my manager asap! I had a manager like that before and she drove me to quit. I went back to the company after she left! No problems like that now.

I do Nutrisystem and on my good days, I have a high protein breakfast before I leave for work. I pack almonds (unsalted), baby carrots, a protein bar, 100 cal bag of something (salty and sweet) in case I get the munchies while driving, a piece of fruit, a 32 oz water jug with a packet of either crystal light tide me over or special k protein water. Also take my second cup of coffee on the road too. My bkfst usually keeps me full for a while and then I munch t/o the day. I've been fortunate enough to lose about 2 pounds a week with this regime. Of course I have my bad days (one week it turned into a bad week) having fast food...packs on the pounds though! I gained 5 pounds this horrible week. Lost it as soon as I went back on my plan. I have all the Starbucks saved in my GPS for those gotta take potty breaks! I try not to use my patient's bathrooms!

Hi, I'm an RN, my mom is an LVN, and my sister started as an LVN, became a RN and is now finisihing up her BSN. My youngest daughter is graduating high school this year and wants to be a nurse. I am encouraging her to start out as a CNA, then go for her LVN license. This is to be sure that, number 1, she really wants a nursing career; number 2, in California there is such a long wait list for the RN programs that I can afford to send her to that she would probably be discouraged, and it makes no sense to me to go to school for 2 years for pre-reqs and then possibly get into a 2 year RN program for a total of 4 years! Number 3 reason is that I can pay for her program and then if she wants to continue on, she can pay for her own! 4 year college is not an option at this time because financial aid folks say that with my income, I should be able to pay for her college (NOT) I just went thru this with another daughter who graduated college and it was ROUGH! Quite a few of the LVN programs here want the applicant to have their CNA license just to apply and it makes sense to me....seems that the same should hold true for the RN programs too or at least give preference to those who do have a CNA lilcense....well, just my 2cents.

that's not too bad; it's actually more than I make doing home health. What company is this? As far as the commute, it depends on the area. Will you be a case manager? I see 5-6 pt's a day.
