Starting training soon as Humana Telephonic Work At Home Nurse
I was just wondering how the job went with Humana at Home and if there are any others out there who are doing this type of job and how they like it. I am thinking of applying for this type of position.

Im and LPN who wants to become an RN! Whats the deal with Excelsior???
I did the LPN to RN program through Excelsior College and it was a wonderful experience. I had to sign the waiver about my state BON may not accept my degree and I also called my BON before enrolling. They tried to discourage me from enrolling in EC and warned me that I may have difficulty being licensed in my state. I enrolled anyway and it was the best decision I have ever made. I got a first class education and now I am a Registered Professional Nurse and my state BON accepted my education and prior hospital experience as sufficient to become licensed in my state. EC is the best school and the advisors help guide you all the way 'from start to finish'.

Preparing for CPNE AGAIN...DETERMINED 2 PASS!!!
I passed the CPNE my second time around. I did not have your positive attitude after I failed though. I did not pick up a book for a year until I received the re-enrollment invoice and I said nope.....this is the last time I'm paying this fee. Failing that first time really devastated me but it was totally my fault. I was not prepared. The second time around I actually had fun during the PCS's because I had memorized a script just like I was in a movie and I just recited my script and did the tasks that I needed to do as I was talking. I was totally well prepared the second time around plus I knew what to expect. Made all the difference in the world. Good luck I know you can do it this time!!

Just starting Excelsior, anyone else? Qs on text books too
I am an Excelsior grad and I graduated in 2010. I did not buy any textbooks. I got a basic nursing assessment book from the thrift store for $3.00 and I downloaded all of my study material from the internet. Many large universities don't block general content from courses and you can find alot of info this way. Flashcardexchange.com helped me to get A's & B's on 95% of my exams. I also search the yahoo study groups for other EC students. I belonged to about 7 yahoo groups and shared study information with other students. This is how I found study buddies and more than enough information to study. I also took the practice exams. I didn't discover this until after I had graduated but Youtube has class lecture videos on whatever you are studying. There are lectures from colleges everywhere that you can use to learn the material that you need to know to make good grades on the exams. Good Luck. Excelsior is a great school and you learn alot more from independent study than you do in a brick and mortar school.

Printing CPNE Study Guide ?
I think I was the last class that got a hard copy mailed to them by EC. Although all of the study guide is important you can print the sections with the critical elements and other sections that you want to refer to and not all of the sections.

In the honeymoon stage?
I have done hospice for 10 years (4 years full time and 6 years part time. I have a full time job in another area of nursing) and I am still on the honeymoon. I attend funerals when I can, to lend support to the families, and I love to take care of dying people. It is one of the few areas of nursing where you can immediately see the difference that you make in a person's life and you can relieve suffering and advocate for those who don't have the strength or energy to advocate for themselves. I truly love hospice and still count it an honor and privilege to be able to care for the dying and their families. I get a rush like no other when a patient really allows me to comfort them and to accompany them to the very edge and watch them cross over to the other side. I don't do paperwork on my off days and 98% of the time I don't maintain relationships with the families past the funeral. Families don't call me when I'm not working because I really emphasize the team approach to patient care and pass the baton to the next person when I am not on duty. I work with a great hospice and each team member has unique gifts and most of the staff gives 110% to their jobs.

Should smokers be admitted into the nursing program?
Of course smokers should be admitted to the nursing program. If they are struggling to quit they can offer unique insight to their patients who may also be struggling with this addiction. Even if they are not trying to quit they will have empathy for hospitalized patients who are smokers and are going cold turkey while they are inpatients. Even though I am an ex-smoker and have no patience for this vice I also subscribe to the philosophy "Live and let live.":smokin:

Would you leave a new job for a better offer??
I think you made a foolish decision. Although I admire your honestly and committment. Don't fool yourself. You are on probation on your new job and if they feel that you won't work out or if your supervisor doesn't think 'you fit' in their department they can get rid of you.....no questions asked. I would have explained to them that my husband thinks I should go back to my previous employer and that I think he is right. I want to keep my seniority and benefits because overall that works best for my family. I'm sorry and I have enjoyed working here but I have to go. If they seem puzzled by this I would bring up the difference in health insurance premiums and I'm sure that they could relate to that.

All School Nurses
Hi Everybody, I am a school nurse at a high school that has a mother-baby program. We have about 1400 students and around 60ish pregnant teens. I was the only nurse here for the first year and a half but now there are two of us full time. During that first year I would have to get someone to come into my office so that I could go to the bathroom. (The bathroom is inside my office) Forget eating lunch. That was unheard of. I have been here for three years. I simply love every minute of my job. This is an inner city high school. The kids are fantastic. True enough they have adult problems at a young age and the females have enough drama going to write a screenplay....but I feel every day like I have made a difference in someone's life. Mostly what I do is counseling and guidance but I love it. I laugh at the ridiculous parents after I hang up the phone or after they leave my office. This is the best job. I am off for every holiday and if I wake up and the wind is blowing too hard or the weather is bad I know there will be no school and I can stay home and still get paid. If I need extra money I can pick up some extra work somewhere but I have learned to live on what I make and if that's not working then its time to downsize. It is comforting to hear that other nurses did not get any orientation or guidance as to what to do when they started working. I thought I was the lone ranger. I want to create some type of nutritional education and breakfast club for my pregnant teens because their nutrition is very, very poor. I am looking for some suggestions from other nurses on how to structure something like this. I write grants for a hobby so I'm pretty sure that I will be able to find funding sources but I need some ideas on how to structure a program like this to take place in the mornings before school and to provide healthy snacks during the school day. It's nice meeting all of you and learning about your working environments.

What is your experience with ADN program through Excelsior College
I am graduating from EC next month. I got 95% of my study material for FREE at http://www.flashcardexchange.com . Did not buy any notes and any books that I purchased before I enrolled in EC were purchased from the thrift store and goodwill. This is a wonderful program and there are many, many online support groups of students who are eager to help you out and guide you in the right direction. Go to the EC website and explore and find out answers to all your questions. Don't sign up with any of the third party publishing companies like the one you mentioned.

Cleaning your stethoscope :(
Don't submerge it in the oxyclean. Just saturate a towel in Oxyclean sol'n and wrap it around the rubber tubing being careful not to get the metal ear pieces or bell wet. Roll it up in the wet towel like a 'pig in a blanket'. Lay this on top of the washing machine or dryer so you wont make a mess and let it stand for a couple of hours. That should get it squeaky clean.

A New 50 year old nurse!?????
The greatest limitations that we face are the limitations that we place on ourselves. If you feel that you don't want to keep up with the pace of the hospital then you have many, many, options as a nurse for a more low key setting. The choice is yours. I went to LPN school at the age of 46. I am currently in RN school and I will be 52 on Thursday. I have mixed grey hair and I don't try to hide it although I would look much younger if I did. I don't care what others think so I am free to be whatever I want to be. Stop considering how your decision will look to other people and be who you are. If you don't make your dreams come true then who will? Go for it!!!

Cleaning your stethoscope :(
Try some Oxyclean. Make a sol'n and saturate a towel. Wrap this around your tubing and let it soak for a couple of hours. Rinse. That should do it. Just an idea of what I would try.

LPN to RN Excelsior College
I am from AL and I am finished with all of the nursing courses. I am waiting for a date to take my CPNE clinical exam. I love the program at Excelsior. It was the best decision that I have ever made. Should have done this long before now.:monkeydance:
