  1. [banana] yes, "walk-through" means you can get your temporary permit in one day. you fill out all your paperwork for licensure by endorsement, and go to the board of nursing office in that state. they go over your paperwork and, if everything is "in order", give you your temporary permit right then and there!!! [/banana] thanks for the replies. i have been trying to find some more postings on "walk-through" states but have come up short. if you hold a "multi-state" or "compact state" license in any of these states you can practice in any of these states.list of compact states: arizona, arkansas, delaware, idaho, iowa, kentucky, maine, maryland, mississippi, nebreska, new hampshire, new mexico, north and south carolina, north and south dakota, tennessee, texas, utah, virginia, and wisconsin.
  2. Hey, I know this has been addressed through a thread before but everything I saw was 2-5 years old. Is there anyone who has traveled recently through a "walk-through" state. The recruiter I talked with this am gave me these states that they have placed RNs lately: Kansas, California, Vermont, and Hawaii. This is a website that gives the list of COMPACT STATES which is not the same as a walk-through state. https://www.ncsbn.org/158.htm This is a website for all 50 states BON information. http://www.worldwidetravelstaffing.com/boards.htm [mouse]Yes, "walk-through" means you can get your TEMPORARY PERMIT in one day. 3. there have been times i've really been apprehensive, mostly because of not enough staff to back you up with potentially dangerous patients. [mouse] generally pretty safe. contraband is taken, patients are assessed for safety. precautions are instituted as necessary. coworkers back each other up as needed. [/mouse] i have done psych for 6 years and have been personally attacked (in my 1st month of nursing) by a male patient who was a vietnam vet that was experiencing flashbacks. i learned very quickly to always be aware of my surroundings, especially where my co-workers were located. even now when i go to check on a patient i do a visual sweep of everything the moment i step out of the nurses station. also we let our co-workers know where we are going and they either accompany us or watch for us. the general rule is if you aren't visible in a minute they come looking for you. always, always keep yourself between the door and the patient. i am not sure if this is a federal law but in ms there are fines and/or jail time for patients who assault healthcare workers.
  4. Hi, I am a potential new traveler (July) and I talked with Supplemental for over 3 weeks. I did lots of research, asked questions, even called the Better Business Bureau ... all good reports. However this past week I get a call stating that they can't reach any of my references. After the end of the 2nd week I contacted another agency and they have called ALL the same references (contacted them with NO problems) and have interviewed me and sent my paperwork to 2 hospitals and I have had 1 interview. Was it a bad day for them I don't know but it sure discouraged me. As the same with all things, people have their own positive and negative experiences just make sure you read and HEAR all the fine print. Good luck!!!!
  5. :thankya: I have not posed this question to my recruiter as I am still working out all the details of the contract at this point. However, will make sure to address this with him tomorrow morning. Thanks again for the information. I have the website for the compact states and a website where it provides a list of all the states with their websites (very handy).
  6. I am new to this travel nursing experience and have so many questions. I was reading through the post about "taxable housing/meal allowance". If you do not have a primary state residence how do you establish your license state? Do you have to get a license for each state that you work in as a travel nurse? This is posing more problems than solutions at this moment because the recruiter does not provide this information to you. I guess they just assume you will maintain a primary residence.
  7. ...Once you move from there, this is no longer tax deductable. ... Thanks for this information. It sounds as if you have had some experience in this matter. Do you know if you are trying to sell your house, can the housing/meal allowance be tax deductible until the house is sold? I would be maintaining the home {house pmts, insurance, taxes, maintenance, etc} until it is sold and returning to it to live between assignments even though it would be minimally furnished. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
  8. Hello, I am negotiating my first travel assignment at this time and I have seen ads posted by Worldwide Travel Staffing for Hawaii and Virgin Islands. As a matter of fact I requested a Hawaii assignment with them. Good Luck
  9. we have some 12 hr shifts (7a - 7p and 7p - 7a) (11a - 11p) 8 hr shifts (7a - 3:30p; 2:30p - 11:p; and 10:45p - 7:15a) reason for overlapping is so that floor is covered during report times. i personally work 2 12's (7p-7a) on sat and sun and then 2 8's (10:45p-7:15a) on mon and tues. i like the fact that i get to spend some time with patients in person but am able to have time to examine the charts, get more background info than i will ever get in report. also i think 12 hr shifts provides better patient care and communication between shifts (this comes from those 8 hr shift reports - they usually suck). anyway my worth.............
  10. The bad thing is that as a psych nurse, I knew what was the "right" answer and what was the "wrong" answer so I had to really try and be honest with myself. Scored moderate on 1 which wasn't too much of a surprise and low on the rest....Hmmmm.....
  11. [banana] For those ethat have a hard time saying no: You can also tell your supervisors up front that you are not interested in doing OT or working extra. [/banana] I am glad to see that a supervisor appreciates honesty and understands that sometimes saying NO is okay. I leave a couple of weeks worth of "will work" days so that the supervisor doesn't waste time calling me. Plus I always screen my calls and the hospital only has my home number.
  12. T totally agree with the statement quoted - you have to let stuff roll off your back and NOT TAKE HOME YOUR PATIENTS!! I haven't started an IV in 6 yrs but do I miss it? NO!!! I went from school into psych and have loved every single moment. I work with adolescents (granted a lot of them are behavioral health) and it takes a lot of patience. If being called names and attempts to intimidate bother you then may I suggest a PRN position for a short period of time to make sure you want to pursue this field. However if you have a tough exterior then by all means go for it. Best wishes and good luck in your endeavors.
  13. I have been a psych/behavioral health RN for 6 years who went from school straight into psych - haven't regretted it so far. Skills are great but if you love what you are doing and it sounds like you have lots of experience - keep it up ... go for it..... wagons HO!!! Good luck
  14. Purplekath, I have been doing psych for 6 years mostly with adolescents (12-18). There are a lot of "attention seeking" attepmts, mostly scratches and Tylenol ODs. However there was 1 who was a frequent flyer, a 14 yo who have been sexually abused by the father since he was an toddler. He had been in and out of our facilities and he was such a good kid behavior wise but had lots of issues in terms of sexual identity and trust. He was released from us and about 2 weeks later we heard he had hanged himself after being allegedly raped by an older male relative. We all were in shock and sadden to know that such a life so young could be so tormented that the only solution was for him to take his life. I shed lots of tears for him, sent up a prayer and finally came to realize that he was not hurting emotionally or physically anymore. Each time I hear a teenager "threaten" suicide when they can't have their way I want to share this story to show them that they are being selfish and that is why they are at our facility because we never know just how serious they truly are. But to move on, I am glad you found a place to share your experiences and were able to move forward. Bless you and best wishes.
  15. i had these questions posted under the travel nursing forum but had no repsonses so far so here goes. i know this is a lot of questions however am sure it is only the tip of an iceberg - i'm just a little ocd. if you could shed some light i would be most grateful. 1. do you like the traveling? 2. did significant other go with you? was it easy to arrange w/agency? 3. was the housing convenient to job site & located in safe area? 4. if you have a multi-state license, how did you maintain/establish new proof of residence without obtaining a new license? 5. did you have to get new tags/drivers license? 6. how do you file your taxes (1 state or 1 part time resident form)? 7. is the housing allowance taxable? 8. did you have any trouble with medical coverage/finding new md? 9. housing wise - is everything provided - appliances? linens? dishes? 10. if you drive your vehicle, do they provide travel reimbursement immediately or does it take awhile to get it? 11. did you receive you completion bonus in a timely manner? this is my first travel assignment.... :thankya:
