med administration
I am writing a course for safe med administration in an intermediate sanction facility in Texas. In this facility the residents come to the med room and take their meds. They are handed to them by the staff. They are required to take a safe med admin course every year. I teach for a community college and am developing this course. I am an RN, MSN, but have never given meds in a jail. I want to show a video or something to make it better than just listening to me talk. Its an online course. Anyone know of any sites I can get a video or something to embed in a power point? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Nursing students sue Excelsior College
I did Excelsior (Regents) in 1992. We all knew about the big CPNE at the end. I got the study guide snail mailed to me when it was time. I basically memorized the thing! Had to go to California for my weekend - there weren't any sites in Texas then- passed it all on the first try.. Not saying to brag. Just that I studied very hard for it.

DNP for Nurse Educators
Meanmaryjean: Touro university. I have not heard of it. It sounds interesting and sounds like something I could do. Have you actually started your class yet?

New to Excelsior College
Good luck with EC! I graduated from there in 1994 when it was still Regents College. Stick with it and study for that CPNE!!! Use whatever tools you can to study. When I went there was no real prep for it. .. You can do it!

Why Do Nursing Instructors Rely So Heavily On PowerPoints To Teach?
Sorry you are having instructors like that. It's not right. I do not read from power points - I use them as a guide. I also use interactive techniques. I don't want to hear myself talk for two hours- I know my students don't! I try to make it fun and interesting. I am sorry y'all have such lazy instructors. They give education a bad name

Nurse Educators, Introduce Yourselves!

Anyone attending Kaplan or Walden University?
Well I went to Walden - I was not denied by other schools as you suggested. I chose them. It worked with my full time teaching schedule. Now here is the difference. You are discussing an NP track- I did the MSN with specialization in nursing ed track. I was already a associate prof at a college and have continued that position. I did not check into the NP program. Didn't interest me. I love to teach. I have been a nurse for 25 years. I feel Walden enhanced my teaching skills. So maybe our discussion is comparing apples to oranges since I am not in the NP track. Anyway- it really is an individualized decision. Choose your school wisely and make sure it's accredited.

When being a patient...
I don't usually tell anyone. I want to see how I am treated first. Unfortunately my hubby or family always outs me. I usually just laugh it off and say it's not my area of expertise so I defer. It usually works out just fine I am a nursing professor so I see a few of my former students. That's aways fun!!

Anyone attending Kaplan or Walden University?
Consider this catching hell for your comments about Walden. FYI I was accepted to many school and CHOSE Walden. You don't go there to pass boards- you already had to have a minimum of an Associates degree and be a RN. I did their MSN with a specialization in Nursing education. They did not have an FNP when I went. I found the work challenging and I learned a lot. It is a widely recognized and accepted university. You had to maintain a high GPA and if it dropped you were dismissed. I guess every university has some bad apples. I got a great Education there. Oh yes- they are accredited by the CCNE so I guess they are doing something right

Love to Teach - Masters?
I did mine through walden. The practicum was not bad. They guide you through. You find a local preceptor - they will talk to the preceptor via phone- and you decide what you are going to do. Teach a class, etc. I created an online orientation for new faculty for mine. I thought it was pretty user friendly. That was 3 years ago.

I cannot ever seem to pass my NCLEX!!! No matter what I do and how hard I try!!
Have you considered ATI virtual coach? I think it's about 275 but the find your weak areas and develop a specific remediation plan just for you. They give u one on one coaching and will tell you when they think u are ready to pass your boards. It's just a thought. It really helped some of my students who had failed to pass

Student Uniforms
We are thinking about changing our student uniforms - especially shoes. We have required white shoes for as long as I remember. It is getting very difficult to find solid white tennis shoes around here. We are also thinking about changing from a maroon too and white pants to all maroon. Our clinical facilities don't care what we choose What uniforms do your schools require?

Best assignment?
I showed the movie a beautiful mind and we did nursing diagnosis and pathos. The for another day I showed clips from what about bob- it was fun and they learned. For my class on death and dying I showed you don't know jack- about dr death jack kevorkian. It was great for ethics discussions.

concerned soon to be educator
CCRN I had a hard time letting go at first too. The first 2 years I taught full time I still work part time at the bedside too. I just felt stretched too thin. As my teaching career progressed, I had to give a certain percentage of my time to community service and college service- committees, etc., as this is a college requirement. I just couldn't keep it all up. I teach 12 months so I am teaching year round so my situation is different. If I only taught fall and summer I would work at the bedside in the summer. I think- no matter what you decided to do- that you will do what you feel you must do. I say go with your gut feeling. I still get to be in the hospital setting by going to clinicals.

concerned soon to be educator
I have been teaching for 8 plus years. I do not work in the hospital as my full time teaching gig keeps me pretty busy. I think that I stay up to date. I do not think you have to work at the bedside to keep your skills up. I also get in and help my students at the bedside. I work closely with the bedside nurses and my students. I keep up with current trends, skills etc. I do more than the required contact hours. I believe you can stay as current as you want. Yes it takes some effort on my part - but it's worth it. Teaching is my calling. I wouldn't give it up. So I disagree that an instructor HAS to work at the bedside too. But again - I put forth the effort to keep current. I have worked with some faculty who have not kept current. They rely on their experiences from many years ago. That is not good. They are not giving their students what is needed.
