Hi. I know it has been a while since you posted this, but I thought I would share my insight. Boulder Community is a small hospital and it's ICU is soon to be in jeopardy as a new facility in Lafayette is opening in December. The new facility, Exempla Good Samaritan Hospital would be the place to go to work in the ICU.

I like to know what occured on the shift I am taking over for, abnormal labs or vitals, PRN's given, etc. I also like to know when the pt first came in, (ie: this pt was admitted 12/22 s/p crani) and what the plan is for the pt (ie: once stabilized the pt should go to Mediplex for rehab). ONe big gripe I have is when we have a pt who has been on our floor for a while and I have never had them and I hear "I am sure you have had them so I will just give you updates". And also, I want to know valid history of the patient, if the pt is here for a spinal fusion but is a quad from 1 year ago, I kind of need to know, however sometimes it is neglected to be mentioned.

We can sign up early or get called in for an extra shiftf. Anyway, we get 1 1/2 times plus $12.50/hr extra for a bonus shift, and if you are a day shift worker who picks up a night shift you get the $5 differential on top of it.

I ALWAYS wear gloves... Sometimes I have a difficult time starting IV's with gloves on, but then I will just put on the smallest size so I can feel the vein better, because I don't want to take any chances.

:chuckle This is so true! I am a new nurse and I see many of the new grad traits in myself.

It depends on the surgeon, but yes we do remove various types of drains.

I am a new RN on a neuro unit and I would like tips from anyone on a "quick" and efficient way to do neuro assessments. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks! ? More Info on Neuro Checks... Neuro Checks - What do I do?

Congrats about school! :-) I agree with the others, tele would definately give you the best experience and preparation for the ED. Especially for rhythm recognition, etc... Good Luck!
