  1. I'm in Clarksville... North East TN
  2. Typically CMAs work in clinics and offices. You will have more exposure to the nursing field by becoming a CNA or LPN. Depending on how long you are willing to go to school. I went to school for my MA it took me a year and a half. After graduation I realized it wasn't what I wanted to do. I then went to LPN school (that took a year). I am so much happier as an LPN than I ever would have been as an MA. I make more money, am better prepared for RN school, and the school was less expensive and didn't take as long. I hope this helps.
  3. My school had a very precise uniform. we had to be pressed and starched every day or we were sent home. We could wear makeup, but only subtle, natural hair color, small earrings, only a wedding band, hair off the collar, bun preferred. All white shoes with no scuffs. I see why they have us look sharp. It makes us look professional, and gets us ready for the working world. My class was told on many occassions how sharp we looked. It made me proud...
  4. The problem I had: I left a package of sandwiches in the fridge because I was working 2 night shifts in a row( Days and evenings get a tray from the kitchen for a meal). So I came in on day 2 and when I started to feel hungry went to the break room to get my sandwiches(which I had dutifully written my name on) and 1 out of 4 sandwiches was left. I was irate. The other shifts get food for free for their meal. I had nothing! I was ******. I wasn't about to eat the one sandwich left, who knows whos hands were on it. Never will that happen again. I don't even put food in there anymore...
  5. WHen I started nursing school our instructors asked if anyone had a weak stomach. One girl raised her hand. As the year went on she proved it over and over again. One instance I remember for example, we were watching a laporascopic gall bladder removal on TV. She ran out of the classroom as green as she could be and vomitted just outside the back door(this was before any clinicals). As time went on she didn't only "get over it", she became on e of the best students in class, always volunteering for the gross clinicals. She is now a very successful and wonderful nurse. Best of luck with everything. Just follow you dreams and worry about the details later.
  6. I didn't read the article, but I have some knowledge related to PTSD. I know that Veteran Affairs uses reliving the experiences as a way for sufferers to work through the symptoms and learn how to deal with them on a day to day basis. I don't know if that is what they are doing with the video games, and then following up with therapy and coping skills...
  7. My LOLs can be the same way. I tell them they have a room rented and one of their family members payed for it. They wanted them to stay so they could have a nice relaxing night away. Usually that works, but not always. Good luck...
  8. I have worked 2nd shift for about 3 months now. I also have a 4 year old. I know its bad, but he has picked up on my sleep schedule and I see him all the time. We spend a couple hours together before work and a little while after work. He isn't in school, so I don't know how it would work then, but for now it is great! I have thought about switching to nights, but why fix it if it isn't broken...
  9. Our schedule is done the same way as op, We have a staffing coordinator that makes the schedule, handles call ins and disciplinary actions. SHe has not posted our schedule for April yet. She called me into her office yesterday and said she needs to find me a way to get a day off. She has me scheduled 16 days in a row! That isn't counting all the times I get a call to come in and cover a shift, and I always do it. I agree that a set date for everything should be in place. The schedule should be posted at least a week in advance. I wish I knew the answer to solve this problem too...:bowingpur
  10. I was just about to post asking the same question. How in the world do other nurses get their job done? I have been working as a nurse in LTC for 2 weeks now, my 1st job as a nurse. Everyone I work with keeps telling me I am doing a great job... but I stay at least an extra hour every day and still don't get everything done that I want to. I am still learning about my residents, I try to chat with them and do a mini assessment while I'm passing meds, butI can't seem to get everything done. We are always working short with the CNAs. I answer call lights and do all I can to help. I just don't know what I need to do to become efficient...
  11. If you currently have your certification in Fl, you should be able to transfer it to TN as far as I know. You may want to contact the certifying agency to find out.
  12. LPN in TN LTC, $14-18 new grad Better facilities pay less Larger cities pay better...
  13. I just wanted to let everyone know that I survived Boards today. I had a couple drags off of a cigarette before I went in and had a couple drags when I got out. My husband is still smoking so he contributed to my deliquency. Anyway... i wanted to say thank you to all for your words of encouragement and tips...
  14. My goal was to stop smoking and be over the addiction by the time I started working as a nurse. I take boards tomorrow and am still having a very hard time, although I have been taking Chantix for a week and a half. I feel it would be useless to use a nicotine aid such as Commit or Nicorette because of the action of Chantix. Has anyone else tried this drug ? Does anyone have any pointers to help me fight these urges? I seriously feel like a crack addict going through detox. All I can think about is smoking "1 more" cigarette. Any help would be appreciated... BTW, I have tried gum, candy, exercise, and eating. They help for just a couple of minutes. I have now been almost 48 hours without a cigarette...
  15. I know there is one in Clarksville. You may want to call workforce essentials at the career center. they help pay for it as well. i'm not sure where they offer the classes but i will ask around for you. i have a couple of friends that have taken the class here.
