Smoking at Work.
You can do what you want, but if this person is making you take breaks at the same time as them and you don't want to, then don't. I smoked for 15 years and have been quit (completely) for about 7. I would encourage her to quit, and only take breaks with her if you want to and have time. Smoking is a very social habit, and if she didn't have someone to talk to when she smokes, she may skip the smoke break. I think the hardest thing to break is the habit of smoking, and not the nicotine (Sp?) addiction. Smoking when you talk with or visit friends and coworkers. Smoking after you eat. Smoking when you drive. Having a ciggarette in your hand and smoking it. That is what I was addicted to more than the actual nicotine. My attitude about ciggs is the tobacco companies already have enough money, I don't need to give them mine (I wish I had all that money back now). Tobacco should be legal, but it should be illegal to grow or manufacture tobacco products as a business for financial gain. If people grew it for themselves fine, but no one should be able to sell it: Unless you want to make drug dealing legal. I think the tobacco companies can take their product and shove it up their ******!

Anyone try the P90X Exercise Plan?
I just started P90X on monday. I wanted to get in shape because all the college classes and studying etc. have contributed to me gaining weight. I haven't been working my usual construction job either, so even trying to cut calories hasn't helped. This workout is a monster for me so far, I am so sore I feel like every muscle I have is sore. Make sure you have the time to devote to it because some days are 1 1/2 hours. This is a six day a week program (seven if you want to stretch on your day off). Plus there is a diet involved that has 3 phases throughout the 90 days. I set up Calorieking software to reflect the ratios of fat:Carbs:Protein to make it easier to comply with. The first phase diet is 20% Fat:30% Carbs: 50% Protein. Second phase adds a little more carbs instead of protein, and third adds even more carbs instead of protein. The workout changes in the phases to, There are 12 dvds so hopefully I won't get bored. So far so good. I plan on sticking with it and getting results. Good luck to everyone trying to stay fit! Have a good day.

Should I be a Nurse??
Off the subject a little, but I was just curious. Do you administer the contrast fluid before a ct in your hospital, or does a nurse do it?

A doctor helps children change their gender
Another way to make money off of confused/unsure children in my opinion. But I guess if their parents and family support their decision it is their (ed. THE PATIENT'S) decision to make.

What/Who is Healthcare United?
I you look in the bottom right-hand corner, it says it is a SEIU organization.

Anesthesia and seizures
look up the type of drugs the anesthesiologist was using. many of them can cause an excited (muscular excitement) state when a younger patient is first induced. It is more common in younger patients from what I remember when looking up several medications for a case study. Sometimes they will have a similar reaction when waking up in the PACU after the surgery (sometimes taking out IVs inadvertently). A good drug reference should give you some information on this subject.

Who's gonna admit it that they went into Nursing b/c of the salary?
They can't outsource to another country, they just bypass normal imigration and bring them here several hundred thousand a year from other countries to keep the wages low. Supply and demand of workers you know.

Nurses have a 'need to know' outcomes!!!
Why can't they follow someone's treatment to see the outcome of interventions, doctors, medications, etc. It would give them the "evidence" in their supposed "evidence based" practice. Why would you have to have a name attached to them. Just a dx and treatment, hospital, provider, time limit, floors pt was on, etc. This could be like a giant clinical "trial" of treatments. Maybe an IT or Informatics person could figure something out like this with a "tracking #" for the Pt. Then anyone who is treating a similar condition (doctor or nurse) could have access to this database to see what is the statistically "best" treatment with the best outcomes. Almost everywhere is computerized now, charting, orders, med admin. etc. It shouldn't be too terribly difficult to do in the future. Seems like it would help patients and providers. That knowledge would truly be power for the patient and the provider. Just an idea, what do the IY people think?

Do you think some schools are turning out nurses too fast?
The reason why they are importing nurses, is to keep wages low. They can't outsource and move the jobs to another country, so they bring the country here. They have been doing the same thing in construction for years. I never worked with anyone who spoke spanish (at my construction job) until after bu** was elected (I voted for him too) :trout: Import workers, keeps wages down in a business with demand for labor intensive workers = major company profits. Major company profits = more money to buy politicians = even more profits. It doesn't matter what business it is, this formula works, and is still working. Maybe we should elect someone who isn't rich and doesn't benefit from this system, oh yeah, everyone who is a candidate is a rich "good old boy(or girl)"

EEK! There's a woman in my room!
I had a nurse do that to me when I was younger, and I know 2 of my friends from school have too. I think it was taught to nurses in the "old days". Yeah, it hurts. Hurts your genitals, and your dignity. I don't think anyone would do it in this day and age. It would be a lawsuit now, as maybe it should be. . . if they were smacking women around like that you can bet there would be a lawsuit.

Relationship based care/Playing the game
Maybe they could show "wayne's world" on the t.v. all day. Wayne's world, party on, Excellent! Or you could just tell them (if they are nice) if they promise right down excellent on the survey you will give them excellent care. Why don't they give us more customer service mind control classes in our pre-req's?

Who took the NURSE out of Nursing?
I think this is a problem with younger people in general. I have seen it in my construction trade. All the younger workers work less and get paid more, far more than what I did when I was younger (and I worked twice as hard). I have seen people who refuse to work hard come from different socio-economic classes. I am a construction worker who is going to nursing school because I want to help people just like the nurses helped me when I had a surgery (that is what helped me decide to change my major from construction management, I am only 3 classes short of a AS in that field). Our nursing school is a competitive program and I would be willing to bet everyone in the class has an IQ of around 120. I am sure half of the 240 people who don't make it in the program each semester worked very hard too. So who cares where you came from. Everyone has worked hard to get into the program. I'm sure there are just as many lazy people coming from upper-class families as from lower or middle class. Let's not start the class warfare thing. This is America, where God created all men (and women) equal right? Oh, wait, God created everyone equal everywhere. Whether they choose to work or not is up to them, not their bank account or their parent's bank account. Or their neighborhood.

Ethics: Does it bother you when people are in nursing to make money?
I'm not a nurse yet, just a first semester student. My clinical instructor said she would not want any student to graduate unless they stood up for the nursing profession as a profession. She is nice as can be and tough as h*ll, a NP with years of experience. She raised her voice when saying this and everyone in our clinical group knew she meant it. I thought I wanted to do this to help people, it pays about the same as my current construction trade. I know after going to clinicals with the variety of people and tasks you have to deal with, while also knowing your stuff. Nurses are underpaid in general. After reading posts on here for a while, I really agree with most of the people on this thread. I want to do the best job I can, just like I do in my current job. I want top pay for the trade of nursing, just like my current job. Why work for a company that doesn't care about its workers? If they don't care about you who they see everyday at work, how much do they care about the patients I wonder? Not much I bet.
