"And what would you like me to do about it?"
I agree. My husband asked me if it made a person flatulent when the commercials first came on. All drugs should be descriptive of what they DO, like Glucagon and Flomax, IMHO. :)

"And what would you like me to do about it?"
I've only been working for three shifts, but I've already had a patient call me into his room to ask if I'd listen to something. I went in there thinking he wanted me to listen to his heart, but turns out he wanted me to listen to his flatulence. After I listened to what sounded like Chewbacca, I said, "yay?" and he said, "NO! They sound more constricted and they last longer than normal!" I asked him if he was taking Acciphex.....but he didn't get it. He was admitted for something completely unrelated to bowels or anything like that, so I think he was just showing off, honestly. We were really busy and had a lot of sick patients. I did laugh about it later though.

Low census/flex time
Sadly, I'm a fecal attractor also. I call my scrubs "poojamas". I just graduated in May and have only worked three days so far at my new job, but on all three of those days someone was asked to take off because the census was low. On the first day, I remember thinking, "I bet that doesn't happen very often, so I'd embrace those times." By the third day I started getting scared that I'll never be able to count on a full paycheck or make a budget. I'd always stay, but the nurses that do stay are left without a unit secretary (those are sent home too) and a PCA that has to take practically the whole floor. It's more than double the workload for the ones that stay and they don't get paid any more money than normal. This is scaring me, I don't mind saying.

NY Nurses to Rally Against Mandatory H1N1 Vaccinations
http://www3.niaid.nih.gov/news/qa/h1n1pregnanttrials.htm they're still asking for pregnant women to enroll for the study. notice also when the clinical trial began and how many pregnant women each site is testing (only 20). http://www.fda.gov/downloads/biologicsbloodvaccines/vaccines/approvedproducts/ucm182404.pdf that is a link to the handout i was given. if you skip down to the pregnancy section, here is what it says: 8.1 pregnancy pregnancy category c: animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with influenza a (h1n1) 2009 monovalent vaccine or fluzone vaccine. it is also not known whether these vaccines can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity. influenza a (h1n1) 2009 monovalent vaccine should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed. this is still on their website right now, so it's current information as far as i'm concerned. if we're putting our faith in them (even with hundreds of "mistakes" they've made in the past), then we have to rely on their information, no? 13.1. carcinogenesis, mutagenesis, impairment of fertility neither fluzone vaccine nor influenza a (h1n1) 2009 monovalent vaccine have been evaluated for carcinogenic or mutagenic potential, or for impairment of fertility. i'm failing to see how you can say "they did extra testing on pregnant women and kids with asthma, just to be sure", curiousme.

NY Nurses to Rally Against Mandatory H1N1 Vaccinations
I was given a handout from the FDA that says they didn't KNOW the side effects the H1N1 vaccine would have on a fetus. They also added that they didn't know if the vaccine could cause future fertility problems. I'm finding it so strange that people on the outside seem to know more than the FDA does, and that I can be told "they tested pregnant women more thoroughly this time." Really? Please show me that in their literature. Why would they talk about future fertility if it were the exact same shot that has been tested thoroughly? Clinical trials on pregnant women only began on September 9th. So here we have a dilemma because not all of those women will give birth by the time the vaccine is distributed (if the lawsuit doesn't halt it), especially if they were "tested" in the first or second trimester. Most people that are concerned about the vaccine are concerned about LONG-TERM effects. I truly hope that when a patient tells one of us that they will NOT be taking something, that we stick up for their right to say no and don't try to misinform them in order to get them to consent. Seriously. They have a right to their autonomy. So do I.

NY Nurses to Rally Against Mandatory H1N1 Vaccinations
I couldn't agree more. Consistently throughout Nursing school I've been told that I need to protect my patients' autonomy. Now that I'm sticking up for my own, they're trying to shut me down.

NY Nurses to Rally Against Mandatory H1N1 Vaccinations
I've been called a conspiracy theorists over refusing a mandatory H1N1 vaccine, and the funny thing is, if I were TRULY thinking of a conspiracy it would be this: Let all the "sheeple" people get the vaccine, and kill the rest with the swine flu. Then the sheeple will bow down to our government for "saving them" and any future vaccines will be accepted without question. HA! My school is requiring we take the vaccine, but the funny thing is, our clinical sites (at least not all of them) are NOT requiring their employees to take them. I've been told I can wear a mask at all times when I'm in the hospital (and then I was told "good luck eating with that thing on, because you have to wear it in the cafeteria too"). The alternative to wear a mask wasn't presented UNTIL I argued about the safety of this vaccine. And even now the alternative of eating in my car hasn't been offered up. The hospitals don't care where we eat, so that particular stipulation could only come from my school. The literature from the FDA says there haven't been any studies finished (some are in progress) in regards to pregnant women taking the vaccine. There's at least one pregnant woman in my class. I do not believe she's going to take the vaccine, and I'm going to stand behind her 100%. The FDA literature also says they don't know what effect the vaccine will have on fertility. This is a big deal! They also admit the vaccine won't protect you 100% against GETTING the swine flu, so why take it? I'm opting for a mask.

Question about the TEAS (nervous)
Oh, the actual test is only 170 questions? That's not too bad!
-
Question about the TEAS (nervous)
If you take the test on the computer, does it tell you right after you submit an answer if you were right or wrong? Or do you have to wait until the end of the test to know your score?
-
Question about the TEAS (nervous)
Yeah, I have never been a big watch-wearer, but I know I need to get one soon anyway. That's exactly what I was thinking...why do I need to know about how long it would take for the sound of lightning to hit my ears to be a nurse?!! I have one more quick question....when you do the reading comprehension, are the questions visible at the same time or do you have to read the passage and then answer questions? If the latter is true, can you go back and look at the paragraphs again or are you just supposed to remember all of it?
-
Question about the TEAS (nervous)
Ah, thank you! I figured it was probably something like that because I remember one girl telling me that she thinks she did poorly on the test because she ran out of time on the math and hadn't answered a lot of the questions. I don't have a watch, but this might be one of those rare occasions worth investing in one! The college I'm trying to get into uses the TEAS as 20% of the points toward getting into the program. Our GPAs are what are relied on the most, so I'm not sweating this TOO much, but I know the girls I'm friends with got 84-87 on the test. I have taken two practice tests so far from ATI and I'm getting in the high 70s (I am NOT good at physical science). I've also been told that the Nursing department looks at your English grade the most and science second. They average it out somehow. I really am a nervous wreck about this!

Question about the TEAS (nervous)
Hi all, I have to take the TEAS exam tomorrow, and I was wondering if anyone knows if it's better to skip a question I don't know or should I try to guess? I didn't know if it would affect the scoring since some tests don't count unanswered questions against the total score. Also, do I need to bring paper and pencil or are those supplied once you get there? Sheesh...I'm almost 40 years old and I'm a nervous wreck over this test!! Any suggestions or personal experience about the test would be greatly appreciated, highly adored, and make you my new best friends. :bowingpur ~Lainie

The most difficult semester you've ever had?
I go to NWACC as well. I'm really enjoying all of my classes this semester, and you're right, HG&D does take a lot of reading. I have Micro this summer and then I'm done with my gen ed courses (YaY!). There have been over 200 applicants for the nursing program this year so I really don't know if I'll make it into the traditional track this year. I guess it probably depends on my TEAS score since my GPA is pretty good. If I don't get in this fall I will definitely apply for the fast track next summer, but I really would prefer to learn everything at a slower pace. It's such an exciting endeavor, but scary at the same time. I just wish it weren't so competitive!
