I need advice.
I am in similar dilemma but I won't go into mine since this is about you. I will say that if you know you are not a night person, DON'T DO NIGHTS!! I tried it thinking I could. It made me sick, every single time and took me days to recover. Sometimes it's OK to say : "I don't do nights." You have to set boundaries. Good luck to you and ultimately we will both choose what is best for us!

Do I have to go back to work after FML?
I recently took FML to try to figure out what has been wrong with me for the past three years...I had flutters, pvc's, pac's, and SOB with severe exercise intolerance. I was very in shape and actually riding my bike when I realized something was wrong 3 years ago. I continued through nursing school, (anxiety and depression were given as a dx), I got a job as floor nurse on the GI/Endo floor (hardest work of my life), I then moved to the cardiac ICU where things came to a head. I almost passed out due to a "flutter" that wouldn't stop, SOB, and pressure went up to 168/90 with vision changes. Let me add that I have seen every doctor under the sun including acupuncture, and holistic medicine with NO RESOLVE! Anxiety and depression still given as my dx. I finally got in with an electrophysiologist because While working I went into and empty room and hooked myself up and my heart rate was in the 150's after squatting from the floor to standing. I sounded off the alarms forgetting that just because the room is empty doesn't mean the alarms wont sound off. My nursing gals come in to rescue "someone" and Were confused to see me. Anyway....they were like, "that is totally not normal and you should see our electro doc. So I did. My dx is a de-conditioned heart with exercise induced asthma. I don't know how I got this heart problem as I was an avid exerciser before. I would love a second opinion my from the UVA or Cleveland clinic but I am not sure how much longer my insurance will hold out. I feel AWFUL!! Doc prescribes anaerobic exercise 7 days a week, propranolol, and inhalers and says I can return. I almost passed out at work! What if I was walking a patient? I do not feel ready to go...Does anyone know the rules of fml, can I look for a less stressful/sitting job while out on fml?

New grad in VA, difference b/t surg tele step-down and surgtele step down internship
I agree fully! I am very nervous about my new position on the GI/ENDO floor but I imagine I will make it if I am willing to learn and put some God's honest effort into it.

Thanks! That is what I thought but I wanted to be sure before I applied. I like your tatoos by the way. Very unique and not something we often see in the med field. :)

Hello! Newly graduated RN here looking for a JOB. I went to valleyhealtlink.net where you can search and apply for jobs in the nothern va area. I am confused by the titles of some positions and would like some further clarification if anyone can hlp. Can someone tell me the difference between surgical telemetry step-down vs. surgical telemetry step-down INTERNSHIP. I realize what an internship is ,but I wonder what the diff is? I know it is a silly question to some but I am a leaf in the wind here. Thanks for any help.

I almost have a hole in my heart!
WoW! Your symptoms all sound very similar to mine. I am very sorry about your ordeal with retiring Dr. It is should be a crime against humanity to treat patients in that manner. My Doc is pretty much telling me not to chase after a cure and that closure isn't significant because I haven't suffered a stroke however, i have felt that I have had a few TIA"s which I won't know until my CT scan in 2 months. I heard of a new procedure in the UK,,,well device anyway,,, called the BIOSTAR that dissolves leaving only your heart tissues in place of the hole. SOUNDS EXPENSIVE!! HA! I use to have about 3 migraines a month were debilitating. I used to take imitrex, relpax, and inderol, but I have come off all of those because they made my 20/20 vision not so good anymore along with anxiety and circulatory issues. I am nervous about the TEE test. i do not like going under. Any way...Thanks for sharing. It is always nice to know that you are not alone in the world. Off the subject a bit....I found an interesting video and wanted to share it. Feel free to share it with others if it moves you too. There are 5 parts. Watch it if you get a chance. It is in 8 minute increments. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmrF9KjlGsc

I almost have a hole in my heart!
I am a nursing student in Virginia and I recently had a bubble study for a possible hole in my heart :heartbeat also known a PFO or an ASD. I have to get a TEE test to be 100% sure but the Doc and I both suspect that it is a hole. I am writing this to ask the experienced nurses if they have dealt with PFO's before and how Doctors usually respond to them. My Dr. said that even if I had a hole that it would not be clinically significant. The medical community says that there are no symptoms of of a PFO but I disagree. I have had migraines since I was 5 and I have flashes and black dots that I see as well. I also have poor circulation and memory loss as well as poor coordination. Recently I have been experiencing tachycardia followed by bradycardia. I have feelings that my life is ending when I have these spells. It is so overwhelming that I really feel that in that moment I am going to "expire":omy: My questions are: 1) As a nurse, do you feel that patients have similar symptoms like I do before diagnosed with a PFO? 2) Do doctors only treat these patients if they have had a stroke? 3) When someone is treated for this condtion, do you know the name of the device that is used? Thanks for any help! * I know, I went crazy with the smilies...they are so cool.*

Nursing student who wants to know what the financial/medical benfits are...
Thanks for the information. I am a student right now and was just curious as to what other current nurses are getting. When my husband was working with Time Warner Cable we never paid for anything either. I wonder why that is? Oh well....Thanks again!

To Flu Shot or Not??
yes. We definitely do not want to put the little ones at risk. I am not looking forward to the "injec-shawn!" Ha! But I know that is necessary for clinical's.

To Flu Shot or Not??
Sorry if I rubbed anyone the wrong way...I will stay out of it! HAHAHAHA! I am going to get my hep-b and t-dap next week anyway so I guess I need say no more.

To Flu Shot or Not??
First let me say that my response wasn't specifically directed at you and I apologize if it felt that way. I just hit the quick reply and it was an honest mistake. I did however want to get "in" on the conversation. I believe I said one in 4 boys have autism and you are correct...I did type that incorrectly. What I meant to say was. 1 in 94 boys have autism and no I am not misinformed. You can read the statistic yourself at the most credible autism site currently on the web. http://www.autismspeaks.org/whatisit/facts.php. Also,,as I said, I do not criticize those who feel that vaccines are neccessary or the ones who don't. I do however believe that WE ALL are trying to find out what is best and as long as we all keep doing so, the world is going to get better eh? Again I apologize if you took any offense to my earlier post.

To Flu Shot or Not??
What a touchy, touchy subject! I have never had a flu shot and I have only had the Flu once when I was 16. I am 29 now and other than migraines am fairly healthy and rarely get sick. The thing we all need to keep in mind is that everyone's body is different. Our threshold's for pain and sickness are never the same and vary from person to person. Vaccinations contain mercury, (yes mercury, they say it has been pulled out but there are still very low levels of it & mercury is not safe for the Human body on any level), other toxins that I could go on and on naming, and the way in which we receive them is just plain silly. By putting anything alive or dead directly into our blood stream we by pass our first line of natural defense which is the mucous membranes. One's body will ask itself, " How did this toxic crap get in this way?" I guess our first line isn't working anymore so lets not use it anymore!" This can cause many auto immune disorders such as autism, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and various others. These conditions happen later and are not present directly after vaccine injection. I have never read any history books or heard stories of anyone who had all these new diseases that we have now. Maybe because our vaccination schedules were not as rigorous as they are today. Or maybe not. This is just an opinion. When Edward Jenner protected people form smallpox in the 18th century by rubbing a cow poc into an open wound he did not use preservatives and other "stuff." Yes, more people are susceptible to death this way but how do we measure the effects, by slow onsets of various disease and eventually death or by immediate death? Maybe if we had a system where we ordered the vaccines and then they were produced and we got them locally and they were not mass made and preserved. Who really knows? It is all speculation at this point right? I mean 1 in 4 boys with Autism shouldn't be called an epidemic right? All I know is...the people who get the Flu shot and other vaccinations are doing what they feel is right and so are the ones who don't and as long as we keep pursuing health for all maybe we will come to a good conclusion. LOVE TO ALL! ESPECIALLY THE NURSES!

Nursing student who wants to know what the financial/medical benfits are...
Hello to all who read this. I first want to say that I did not get into Nursing for the money. I hear some say that the money is not that great and some say that it is. I would just like some "truthful" unbiased answers from those here in VA (and other places)... what are the medical benefits like? I am paying $500.00 a month right now for medical insurance for 4 and my deductible is 2,500. Needless to say, I still have medical bills to pay. I have heard that nurses receive good medical benefits and just wanted to hear what some nurses who have been working for a while have to say. Thanks for any help.:typing

Micro prerequisite expiration
I have been in several similar situations. I find that Keeping all of your syllabi is extremely helpful .This helps administration make a better decision as the accept your class or not. I hope that helps. If you don;t have the old syllabus then you access your old schools catalogs and find a brief description of the class.

Anyone here Lord Fairfax Pre-Nursing/Nursing Student?
The HLT 130 is a total of 7 units with with 7 quizzes and one of those quizzes you have to take at the testing center. It is an easy class. There is alot of what I like to call "busy work". You have to type out some defintions and then do a relating worksheet to whatever unit you are on. It is fairly easy. I have professor Atkins online though. On campus maybe different. I don't want to sound like a know it all but if you have taken the ITE 115, you should probably get it out of the way being as it is the only class that is required for ither program (LPN or RN). You can always try to test out of it in the testing center though. I tried 2 times and failed 2 times. It was a pretty detailed test but if you are familiar with the networking part of computers you will probably do better than I did!!! :scrying:Anyway,,I just wanted to tell you that because the class is not listed in the pre-req's however, it is required (or the passing of the test in the testing center) :typing. I don't know if I can wait until May to know if I got accepted. My first choice was the ADN program and ny second was of course the LPN. We will see...:bowingpur

Anyone here Lord Fairfax Pre-Nursing/Nursing Student?
I was a transfer student in Dec 07 and I had a terrible time with the financial aid department, the business office, admissions and now sadly, the health professions department. I took Psy 230 online. I really liked that class. I am taking SOC 200 in the summer. Right now I am taking ITE 115 and HLT 130. I needed a lighter load this semester. I was also taking BIO 150 (micro) but it was kickin my tail and I was in no mood this semester to get my tail kicked by microorganisms!!! I will try again this summer:bugeyes:. The best advice I can give you is to go to the school personally and DO NOT leave until they fix your problem. E-mailing and phone are like talking to a tree.:smackingfSometimes,,,I want to yell, "You know! I;m paying for this education in some way, shape, or form,,,so treat me with some respect!!!":nono:. Well....Congrats on our journey to Nursing. We are one of kind folk.

Anyone here Lord Fairfax Pre-Nursing/Nursing Student?
My sister is also waiting on acceptance. We don't get to take many classes together because we watch each other's kids. If you have any questions about the RN or LPN program, I try to answer them for you. I had a very hard time with the process because of LFCC unorganized staff and their lack of communication between departments. I really like LFCC but they really need to work for more success in those areas. I recently took the Nur 27 class which consisted of long term care. It was an interesting class. What classes are you taking this semester if you don't mind me asking?

For all of us who are sweating bullets waiting on acceptance/rejection letters...
Thanks for the words of encouragement. I think the application process is what makes or breaks ya, no the actual program! Let's just hang in there.!

For all of us who are sweating bullets waiting on acceptance/rejection letters...
I have been jumping through hoops for my school in order to get accepted. Apparently you must not only have an excellent GPA, TEAS score, and all your pre-req's, but you must also plow through the unorganized departments in order to get YOUR things in order. I think I should get a part time job as an admin there or at least a secretary. I would probably save many students the undesirable and unnecessary stress. I am still waiting for my acceptance! Over all the application process has felt much like beating my head on wall.. However, I am optimistic!
