I'm about to crack...read this and help!!!!
i know what you mean about the DON (i love her dearly). we had a med-aide call in one day so she had to pass the meds and the ADON and the MDS coordinator !!! All three of them and still the pass was out of compliance because of time. sorry just had to say it. After that for at least a week or so they appreciated all of us just a little more.

nurse aides rules
I was a CNA for 2 yrs. then a med-aide for 2 and during that time i watched many of my nurses in disgust because they were "always" @ the nurses station sitting on their butts, so i thought (keep this in mind). Now i'm a nurse and i know there is just a little more to it than just sitting . I went back to the facility i worked @ before i became a nurse and all the aides thought i was going to be an "nice" nurse. I'm not so nice in many of their eyes, it took about a month or so of constant teaching and writing them up and now they know what i expect. Some of them truly care and the others well its money to party or whatever they do. My advice is to take an occasional minute to ask them about their life, its means a lot and make sure that administration will stand behind you on your decisions.

:flowersfo Dont crack, they (your pts.) apparently need you. Isnt it illegal for you to work off the clock? Stand your ground and keep your head up. Dont let the tx. nurse get away with not doing a job and getting paid. You can't keep this up much longer i'm sure. Remind admin. that the pts. are the only ones that truly suffer in the end. Hang in there.

Alzheimer's-Brother won't help!!!
sounds like a situation i might encounter in the future. i am my mothers only daughter and know that one day her care will be my sole responsibility and it is not right. i had a pt. with dementia whos family never came to see her and one day her son was there at her bedside crying, i tried to comfort him all he could say is this isnt my mother. i hope you dont think i am trying to excuse his behavior but maybe he can't deal with her illness and the changes it is making. i understand though i get very frustrated with families that come to the nursing home to visit after months of no contact and want to complain of their loved ones care. Where were they when we held them while they cried, or cared for them when they were sick? hang in there;)

Help! is this Normal/legal?
i work in a nursing home my pts. about the same range. have about 54 pts. with 4 cna's,1 med-aide, and a secretary. without these people to help me my job would be your job impossible. approach administration about your concerns and if there is no change walk away. mention med-aides they are a life saver;)

how to know if the glucometer is accurate?
the nursing home i work in has several brittle diabetics. about a month ago one of them kept dropping in the middle of the night i notified the doctor and she suggested that she might be receiving too much s/s due to an inaccurate glucometer. i compared 2 brands and she was right one read almost 175 mg higher than the other, so the facility changed glucometers. a few nights ago i ran controls on the machine and it read lo i notified administration. 2 days later i come back and the old machines were back in use!!!! they insist on buying these machines from wal-mart!! i love wal-mart but dont trust this machine. what do i do now?:angryfire

temporal artery thermometers
i have a personal one that i use for work I work in LTC and its hard for many of my patients to hold thermometers under the tongue. i think it is accurate. i compared the facility oral thermometer several times with the temporal and the temporal each time read 0.5 - 1 degree higher each time than the oral thermometer.

would you finish work from previoius shift?
i have the same problem. i get it all worked out during report and address with the nurse i offer to help finish up on some things and make it a point to clarify what will be passed on. i'm a new nurse and one nurse in particular left me an admission she received @ 10 in the morning (i come in @ 2 pm) and simply said things have to get pushed to the next shift. i stood my ground and told her i would help but would not do it for her. needless to say we have an understanding now.
