  1. hi trish, i used to work in l&d; i had a littman master classic ii (single sided). it was great for heart/lungs/bp's. whenever i needed to examine a baby, i used the littmann neonatal scopes that were always secured to the warmers. you could use the mcii on a baby also, but you would hear lung sounds and heart sounds at the same time, as the diaphragm is technically too big.
  2. hi sally, i started out in a retail clinic for my first np job. i knew there would be many things i wouldn't see/treat due to the limited scope of practice in that setting, however as i new grad i also didn't want to be overwhelmed beyond belief! i worked with a great group of np's who were only a phone call away. when i felt i was at a point where i wanted more experience (and an environment with on-site colleagues), i changed jobs. i was upfront w/ my new employer about my work experience and what i felt my weaker areas were, and everything worked out!! feel free to pm me.
  3. Thank you! It took one day short of 4 weeks! I guess now is their busy time, and plus they are a bit unorganized, I would venture to guess. When myself and my friends applied to take the exam, someone who applied after me got her authorization to test before I did, and then after we all took it, I got my results BEFORE someone who took the test a week before me.
  4. Did you buy it online? When you get it (or if you have it already) less us know what you think!
  5. Got my official results this week! Whew! BTW: AANP exam has 150 test questions, I think 15 are sample?
  6. Hmm, the Fitzgerald class said it's usually 2-3 weeks. Maybe that's just the average. But I need that piece of paper to move on with my life! And my job!
  7. Oh, I know! I felt the 30 seconds it took to say pass/fail took 5 years off of my life! CONGRATS! I'm still waiting for my official results....tomorrow means it's been 3 weeks! A small part of my brain is worrying my prelim results will be wrong!
  8. I took the AANP family exam on 6/23 and have a preliminary pass result. I think taking the Fitzgerald course really helped! And I listened to CD's too. Good luck!
  9. I work in L&D as a nurse...I don't know of any NP's that do deliveries. Or PA's for that matter. Just docs and midwives. FNP's do prenatal care in the office, but no deliveries.
  10. Has anyone taken either of these RECENTLY? As in 2006? :)
  11. I like that the 12's give you more time off, but while I am doing them I hate them, especially if it's a busy, understaffed, horrid night (which it usually is these days).
  12. Hi everyone. This is sort of off topic, but I saw this thread... I'm currently in a FNP program, but I'm not close to graduation. I'm doing it part time and this is my 2nd semester. I would appreciate any tips/hints/recommendations!! I know everyone has different learning styles, but any information would be appreciated! [email protected] Melissa
  13. Thanks Dave! :)
  14. MD Terminator: " I then point them to the brochure on what an NP is. " What brochure is that? I am a student, and I have some relatives/friends/etc. that don't really get what a nurse practitioner is/can do. I tell them in my own words, but would love a brochure! :)
  15. Yes they did sound harsh written. I am sorry; I did not intend them to be. I unfortunately don't have a scenario. In my NCLEX review class, the teacher said that one is always given before the other. I wrote it down. Now I can't find where I wrote it so I was wondering.
  16. I don't know why they would be given together, it was an NCLEX topic. ?
  17. Thank you...I know what they are, but I heard that if the patient has both prescribed, that one has to always be given before the other.
  18. I know one if supposed to be given first, but I can't find the paper that I wrote this down on!! I am studying for NCLEX, would just like to get this straight in my head, thanks!

Thank you very much! I am printing that out!

Yes I have heard of water intoxication with Pitocin. I heard that they give us a huge binder of stuff we need to know with med sheets in them. Hopefully it is not as detailed as the drug book :)

Hello all. I did my senior practicum in L&D so I am not TOTALLY new to an L&D floor. I'm starting my first job as a nurse in late July on the L&D unit. As part of my learning of course I learned about meds, but what I am having a hard time with is this: when you look up something like Pitocin or Mag Sulfate, what exactly do you need to know? There are so many potential side effects for each med, how am I supposed to remember them all? Should I just remember the main ones (e.g. terbutaline: tachycardia, nervousness, upset stomach, etc.) Also do any of you know of a good OB nursing procedures book??
  22. Thank you Susanmary.
  23. As a rule HH doesn't hire new grads into L&D. Sometimes they make an exception. If they do, they will most likely hire a peer of mine, who is doing her clinical there. I have done my followup homework too. We will see what happens. I'm doing my best to end up in L&D. I also interviewed for antepartum, which would be better than med/surg to me.
  24. Yes. At 3 hospitals that hire new grads. The first 2 have already hired experienced nurses; the 3rd one I have not heard anything yet because they had an "overwhelming response" and she is still interviewing.
  25. Well I'm having no luck with all the hospitals in my area in L&D, because everyone and their mother is interested in L&D!
