Hi, Norwaystudy You're so helpful! I do have Associate Degree in Nursing (AD --that's how we abreviate it) from community college. Just thinking now--is that better for me to take RN to BSN program here, in the US and then go to Norway or better to take courses in Norway. I think that even with BS in Nursing from USA, Norwegians still will want me to be "re-educated" according their requirements. But I can be wrong. Any info you'll give for me-- I'll highly appreciate. My relocation back to Europe will be not easy because I'm in the States for 12 years. However, I need to be closer to my family. Your advices will ease my relocation. I still hold an EU countries passport, so immigration will be easy. I know that Americans have a lot of problems while immigrating to Europe. So, you did a perfect job learning foreign language, immigrating to Norway and studying nursing there. I know what means to learn foreign languages, immigrate, and adapt in a new country. Not easy at all. You'll love being a nurse!!! It's a very rewarding profession. Do you plan to come back to the States after graduation or you'll stay in Norway for good? Have to go to work. Dear Norwaystud thank you very much for your response. It's so helpful info. I just began studying Norwegian and doing pretty good so far. For me it is mixture of German, English and my native language--all of them I know, so much easier than was with English. Are you doing studying abroad program? Majoring in Nursing? I have AD in Nursing (from American college) and MS in Economics (from my country) Not sure--do I need to get BS in Nursing in the order to qualify for licensure in Norway or they will retrain me anyway? Most BS in Nursing programs here, in the States, for me will be online and I think they will give me only degree not much knowledge. Also, thanks for emlployment agency link. I agree to Janfrn! I just sent all my papers to CRNNS. Before, I contacted them and was explained that as a RN with ADN from USA, I probably will not need a BSN; however, my credentials will be evaluated. I passed NCLEX, have valid RN llicense and have an experience that looks like helpful factors in my case. In your wife's case, I would strongly suggest to pass Nclex and obtain RN license before she applies for Canadian license. Good luck!

Looks like I'm not alone who misses CNA job. I hate so many parts of my job as a RN--endless charting, not having time to sit at the pt's bed and talk/hold his hand, dealing with administration staff who go by numbers, charts etc. Nursing in the States is not what I expected. Was pleasantly surprised when Australia's hospitals offered RN jobs that include total pt's care (looks like majority of units there do not have CNA's/PCTs). Still thinking about relocating there and doing "real nursing". The good thing is that the nursing field offers numerous opportunities that would be not available in other fields.

Many thanks for a such detailed info about CB. I seriously think about accepting CB offer to work there. They offer me pretty decent salaries. I believe that I will have much more questions when it get closer to relocation there. Have a nice weekend!

Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut offers good sign-on bonuses and has extensive new grad training program. Try to contact them. I'm sure that there are many hospitals in USA that will be more that happy to hire you. We desperately need nurses. In return, can you tell me about living in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia? We think about relocating to Nova Scotia. Cape Breton looks like a nice, quiet place to live. But as you never were in NC, we never were in Nova Scotia. I was contacted by Cape Breton Health saying that they're in need of nurses. We looked on the internet an found out that CB is so beautiful and houses are relatively cheap. Do you have storms and hurricanes there? I was in NC, but never lived there. One of my classmates from nursing school works at Duke. If you're interested, I probably could find her and talk to her about nursing job/living in NC specifics. A good friend of mine lives near Raleigh and absolutely loves there. He says that there no hurricanes. I think the worst place re:hurricanes is Florida. Good luck and tell me as much as you can about living and working in CB. thanks a lot.

Livermets, how did you do on exam? I spoke to someone from LHSC and she encouraged me to apply for the Ontario license even if I don't have BSN in Nursing. She stressed that they need nurses. I think I'll try.

I just came from work feeling so proud of myself. The long story make short--The elderly patient -female-came on our floor with a posey vest and other restrains. She was violent in ER--we were told. I was approached by co-worker--male-- asking for help with translation because patient did not understand English and was non-compliant. So, I did and ended up taking vitals and performing other nursing tasks. Patient did not trust anyone but me. To everyone's surprise she was joking and smiling at me. No violent behavior at all!!! Question: what you, ladies, would do if you would be in foreign country and saw a guy approaching, then digging under your skirt. Even if he wants just to give you a Hep shot into the belly-- you would not understand it and kick him, then--end up in 4points restrains as this old lady did. Lucinka, I can be wrong but you can not speak language other than English in a healthcare facility. Unless you are asked to do so--to translate, to speak with the patient who does not understand English, etc. But no chatting in your own language! Nobody will like it + it's against many healthcare facilities policies. You'll be surprised how many rules you need to follow, but be wise and follow all of them. Good luck!

I'm a nurse with ADN in US, relocating to Canada. Waiting for evaluation package to come from Ontario. Yes, nursing board is checking credentials on a personal basis. It's worth to try. My other option is Alberta. A nice province with a lot of nursing jobs and accepting with ADN. Also BC has a lot to offer! Good luck and keep in touch!

I'm European, successfully working in US for 11 years and relocating to Canada soon. I think you'll be treated the same as you'll treat your patients and co-workers. Language will improve quickly in English speaking surroundings and you'll get a great experience in the US. Welcome!!!

Thanks everyone for replies. I just got immigration newsletter about extreme shortage of nurses in Saskatchewan and Alberta. I probably need to look for the job there. If Canada does not have many travel nurses-- good thing! Travelers not always helpful-- talking from my own experience. I'll be more than happy to take permanent RN position. Is exam for licensure very though or similar to our NCLEX?

Zolly, Happy New Year! Many thanks for info. You made my day! I was discouraged to look for a job in Canada, b/c read few posts stating that nurses need BS in the order to work in Canada. I'll try to contact nursing boards of some provinces and ask for info on requirements. Do you think that is better for me to look for travel nurse's job at the beginning and only then look for the hospital in Canada that will sponsor me? Is in BC shortage of nurses as, say, in the States? Do I still need to take exam if I'm coming as a travel nurse?

Can someone help me by advising what part of Canada would license me as a RN/LPN if I have only AD in Nursing from US college. In addition, I hold MS in Economics from my country and work experience as a nursing, home health, and rehab aide in the US. Any info/suggestions will be highly appreciated. thanks!

Willing to relocate to Canada and am interested in London, Ontario. However, I have AD, not BS and work in the US. Did hear that Ontario requires BS. Any suggestions where to easier to get a job with AD in Nursing? Have only 1 year of Med-Surg experience. Is immigration for RNs to Canada though? Thanks a lot!!!
