Hi, I am a LPN and have been working in a psych hospital for about 3 months now. LPN's can do everything a RN does except get orders for restraints and seclusion. And like what was mentioned earlier if the census drops on a floor then only a RN is utilized and a RN must always be working alongside a LPN. The LPN cannot work alone. Hope that helps.:nuke:

Hospitals in my area are no longer advertising LPN positions but have positions called Medical Technician Assistants. It states responsibilities such as inserting foleys, bathes, adls, and other technical procedures. What exactly is this? What is the pay like in the hospital for these positions?

As a newly licensed LPN I find this appalling. In Ohio they are getting rid of the traditional LPNs and replacing them with clinical technicians supported by medication aides. Sure it is opening up a whole new job market but it is suddenly ridding the job market of the title LPN. All the LPNs who can no longer get jobs in the hospital because of this now apply at LTC. However, now LTC has a smaller job market because so many are looking for employment there now and LTC can be pickier and go with someone with experience (?former nurse's aide). This is what I was told. 3 major hospitals in my area have done this within 2 months of my graduation causing me to apply for tech positions which involve cathether insertion, feeding, adls, baths, vs. The LTCs told me they couldn't give me a pt position cause I am a new grad, and a fulltime position because someone has nurse's aide experience. I don't have a healthcare background after getting laid off from a graphics background. What is to happen in Ohio of the soon to be grads of LPN schools?

In my job search for the last 4 months since I graduated from LPN school I have slowly watched all the hospital jobs disintegrate. There are only 2 major hospitals in my area. One only hired LPNs at their satellite hospitals. Now in the last few weeks they have removed all LPN positions and are calling them some kind of clinical technican. These technician positions state that this employee can insert and remove catheters, take vitals, do simple dressing changes, feed, change, bathe and do adls. The other major hospital stopped hiring LPNs at the main hospital and the satellite hospitals are offering LPN jobs to internal applicants only. All this after I went to school for a year. This is causing everyone to flock to LTC which then is allowing these employers to be a little pickier about who they hire and it is now harder to get in than it was before. Good luck with school.

I have done plenty of research in the Cleveland area. Area hospitals here are around $16.85 for new LPNs in hospitals, with I believe a 70 cent shift differential for night shift. A former classmate of mine got $20/hr for LTC for evening shift. Of course with the pay came a lot of pitfalls. 5 days of orientation, 25 pts, and med passes that were horrendous with absolutely no help from her fellow workers. Be careful of orientation. Always ask how long it is and what it involves. Good luck with school and your future job search.

The cost included the classes I mentioned guaranteeing if you took all the classes and did all the homework that your computer would shut off at 85 questions and that you would pass. If you didn't pass you could get tutoring from Caroline which was included in the cost. I just took the classes in September and like I said it was well worth it. If you received financial aid that $400 should be covered in your tuition.

I took the class through my school. It was awesome. You learn so much about the material and how to study for it. I highly recommend it. I believe it was 6 classes, 3 hours each. I had the daughter, but the mother also teaches and does private tutoring at her home. PM me and I'll send you the info. All my classmates took the class and all but 1 passed at 85 questions.

If NJ is one of the many quick results states you can check between 24-48 hrs after taking it on your states board of nursing by doing a licensure verification.

Go to your local library. They have a review book, not sure what it's called, but your librarian should know. It has tons of practice questions in the book and on the cd that comes with it.

As a recent graduate of an lpn program I, myself, would have to say the first semester was hardest for me. I had absolutely no medical background whatsoever. I came from a graphics printing background so I had to learn everything from the bottom up. The first semester started teaching you the diseases and all the critical thinking skills, and of course all the skills test outs that had to be done. I hadn't taken any prereqs so I had more classes than most of my classmates and a larger study load. But I hung in there and made it. If you get off to a good start you just keep building on what you learned from the previous semester. During your last semester it all starts coming together and making sense. At least for me. Try not to get behind in any of your subjects and do your best to not just memorize but retain all the info you are learning. Clinicals in the second semester help you use all those skills you had learned in the beginning and get used to having actual patient contact. Good luck with school. :balloons:

manature I'm not sure what area of Cleveland you are from but ATS Institute in Highland Heights has an LPN bridge program with both day and evening classes. They have a website www.atsinstitute.com. I took the evening LPN classes there.

Any LPNs doing clinical research? Is it a bad idea to graduate and go directly into it? Why kind of job responsibilities do LPNs generally have. Any help would be appreciated.

Good for you. I just turned 44 in May and in my final quarter of lpn. Went from printing/graphics to nursing in a matter of year and a half after spending almost 20 years in printing. Got laid off unexpectedly, but it turned out for th best. Good luck. You can do it!

Just wondering why no one hasn't responded to this question? As a LPN graduating in September I would like to know to.

daytonite i was able to get on the site you requested a few days ago and it had some great info i need for my assessments but i can no longer get on the site you suggested. it gives me an error message. is there a similar site you can direct me to that gives each part of the head to toe along with the correct terminology to chart with?
