Relocated Nurses, what do your hubbys/partners do???
H2B is a doctor and is doing his post grad in Boston hence why I want to move over asap. He just started there in June and its tough going as you can imagine from harvard affiliated hospitals. The pay isn't what it is back home,a take home of about 2600 every month and he has laon repayments and rent which leaves him with about 4-600 spending a month however if he stays on after his 4 years the pay is about triple.

Shortage Time From UK-USA
Thanks for the info. My university seem to be taking forever to send out paper work, they said its the time of year. The guy also said he will send out standard transcirpts first and if they need anymore info they can ask for it and it won't cost me anymore, felt like telling him that its not the finacial cost its the time cost!!! I asked for him to send them 10 weeks ago he said it would take 6 but he'd try and get them sent out in 2 weeks and they're still not there! Patients is not a good trait of mine. I'm only at the start and missing my significant other so so much, he's just changed rotation (on a residency programme) and this one is going to be far more time consuming than the last one so phonecalls and contact won't be as much as we've had to date which is making him and me more inpatient just to get there. I wish we knew exactly how long it's all going to take so we had a date to focus on but reading everyones posts it could be anything from 9 months to years! I'm doing it on my own at the moment but don't know if i'd be better off with an agency and don't know where to go for that as there are so many and need one that will place me in Boston with my significant other, I couldn't manage having my son and I too far away, to be able to manage with both of us working and a son we need to be together. Sorry about the rant!! and I know it's just the begining its just so frustrating when you know you've such a long way to go and the people you rely to get you there in the shortest time possible such as the university transcripts dept just led you down the garden path!! :angryfire

Codeine and coming to America
Thanks for info, I get a migrane every month (headache pressure behind eyes, numbness down face and arms) anyway found that co-dyramol or other codeine based meds have always done the trick with diclofenic, if i get it in time i only need the one dose. Wouldn't dare travel without them so saw GP yesterday as have trip planned to the US for 4 weeks and he's prescribed some migrane meds for the trip, would hate to get an illegal drug record before i've even applied for my I-140 petition!

Age when you had your first child?
#1 son @23 I feel I was too ypung and miss out on things I wanted to do like travel. Don't get me wrong, my son is the light of my life I would never ever change him for anything. My significant Other and I want to wait until after we get married for #2 and we are financially comfortable which will make me probably in my 30's. however as we know from #1 you can't always plan 'em

midwife or MD?
I had my baby in Dublin Ireland. At the hospital I attended the midwifes deliver all the babies, an md is present if there are major complications only. My birth was uncomplicated although i did need an oxytocin drip for 2nd phase when my body thought 'i'm actually going to have a baby' and contractions stopped. the md came, saw prescribed and went. My second baby will be born in the USA and wouldn't even think about having an md. Although will probably need obstetric involvement during pregnancy (had really bad time with hyperemesis, acute renal failure and eventually had TPN) but as regards delivery will hopefully go down the midwife route providing i get to that stage of course, fingers crossed.

Mantoux test
i know this will be a problem for both me and my 2year old as we've both had bcg's at birth (all babies in dublin are offered it at birth). Although I've only started the emigration process is it better to wait to get mantoux and CXR until were going or is it worth it to have these things on file now?

Bad Contracts with Bad Agencies
I wonder would anyone mind pm-ing me with some agencies recommendations. I wish to work in Boston and my specialty is emergency. I've been looking up some but a bit confused, i'd rather get a contract with a hospital directly but the one's i've ttalked to say that they don't sponsor I140's for green card nurses. I've applied for my CES and who have recieved all my paper work bar 1. they are waiting to get my college paper work at the moment. Hoping to do as much of it myself if i can to speed things up a bit. Any advice much appreciated.

uk nurses who have come to the usa
yeah I've done 90 hours in practice in all the areas before i branched into adult nursing and the theory is calculated on the amount of time allocated to the assignments for those areas as well as lecture hours. just obs missing:(

Shortage Time From UK-USA
To Date: June 06: Applied to take the cgfns programme, paid for by visa. July 06: Started studying, realised I don't need to take cgfns exam for MA state. Have emailed CGFNS to ask for CES instead and hopefully not have to pay the full whack! (i know i should have checked it all out before!) Currently taking NCLEX questions and studying the medications. I don't think my course will pass the CES requirments as don't have any obstetrics so trying to organise it so have it ready to start if I don't pass the CES requirments. Also emailed the professional credential service to see which CES certification they want, the health care professional or full education, once I have both of those I can apply for NCLEX. Is there anything else i could be doing in the mean time to help speed up emigration? like form filling? I'm not doing it through an agency so anyone got any advice for finding an employer to file L-140? and will I need NCLEX before I do that? Also I will be bring my 2 year old son with me (My partner is already living and working in the states but even if we got married my little boy can't go on his visa as he's not his biological father) is there anything I need to start now for him?

Making up hours fro usa?
Thanks for the welcome! I'm just so desparate (I hate using that word!!) to get over to the US with my son to be with my boyfriend and finding the whole system so stressful, especially with all the red tape and finding that each time you think you are on the right road you keep hitting a brick wall!! I've never been so frustrated in my life!

uk nurses who have come to the usa
Hi everyone, I'm not sure if i'm posting in the right place but maybe you could offer me some advice or steer me in the right direction. I qualified in London in 2002 and currently working in Dublin, my credentials are being assessed by CGFNS but I know some of my time is missing, for example I did no OB in my training, if you are missing time from your training where do you go to get that time back? I don't want to go back to do a whole year just to get 80 hours in ob and 40 hours teaching! Any advice would be much appreciated! Jaynie
