  1. Alexis98, I am a school nurse at a middle school of 250 kids. My two strategies are as follows: Once a month (or as needed) I send a "frequent flier" lists via email to all staff, administrative and teachers. This list is those who come in frequently and are usually non-needed visits. These students are the ones who usually and frequently miss class to come to the nursing office for a non-need. This way, everyone in the building is aware of the issue and assist me in keeping the kids in class. I usually ask that if any adult is unsure (on any level) if a visit is truly needed to please call me at the health office and I will assess if a visit is truly needed. Often, the student is simply trying to get out of class (happens frequently in middle school). Of course each situation is different and we handle each visit as such. I have reduced my non-needed visits by half since starting these emails. The teachers can (if appropriate) relay the frequent visits= reduced class time= lower grades to mom and dad as well. Often, if the parents are aware of the issue, it is enough to at least reduce the issue. I do call parents as well, but only if I am unsuccessful at getting through to the kids myself. The second tactic is to use the story of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf". I sit with each student, one on one, and have them read the story. After reading the story, the student tells me the story in their own words. Then, we as a joint effort, talk about the story as it relates to that student and their current behavior. I let them know that they are causing "care fatigue" in me (to them) and that when they truly do need me, I will not take them seriously. This has worked about 90% of the time. The trick is to take each case individually. It has worked well for me. As a plus for the kids, they stay in class more which usually also improves their grades as well. The teachers have been very pleased with both tactic so far!!
  2. It's simply a video of you teaching a group of people a selected topic for 30 minutes.
  3. I thought that it was still a requirement, but it could have changed. I did that course in the summer of 2011, so I do not know if it was changed after that.
  4. You can do all of the classes through exam except the nursing courses just as the ASN was. You can push through as many classes as you can handle. The major difference between the ASN and BSN nursing classes is that with the BSN classes, you must do most of them in order and finish certain classes before you become eligible for the next one. Yes, they do still require the video, but it's really not that awful. I did the video, planning and everything needed in less than 8 hrs and still passed with a great grade. The video is terrifying when you first learn about it, but it actually not that bad.
  5. Excelsior's BSN program is a good program. I finished my ASN through Excelsior and I am now working on my BSN. I will be finished in mid April of 2012 (this year). It is overwhelming to do more than one nursing class and one Non-nursing class at one time (if you are working as well), but the entire program is very doable! It took me about 2 and a half years, but I wasn't pushing myself and took a few breaks in between. Please email me with any questions, I'll be glad to answer any questions that you have.
  6. Sounds like you are going in too far in or hitting the side of the vein. Either way, you are "popping" the vein. Don't go so deep next time. Watch for flashback and stop!
  7. Just a thought..... I wonder if the problem is not your level of knowledge or understanding, but instead your anxiety or fear of failure. Have you considered investing some time and energy in relaxation exercises such as meditation or mind refocusing exercises? Anxiety and fear will block your ability to recall the information needed or make the correct decision in a testing situation. Again, just a thought............... If your anxiety is out of control, it may be time to ask your doctor for some help.
  8. Your attitude is unbelievable!!!!!!! You should spend a day following me around! It would change your mind completely! I started in home care as an aide (10 yrs), then as an LPN (2 yrs) and now I am an RN (2 yrs). I have never worked in a hospital (except during clinical- I hated the hospital). I love home care! I am happy! And my patients are very well cared for with me as their nurse and case manager!
  9. I took it on 4/24/10.........earned a "C" with very little studying. It wasn't all that bad though. I am due for Research in Nursing next.
  10. I wouldn't have choosen that as the first one myself..............just my 2 cents. :)
  11. It was definitely hard! I could have studied more! I used an Abnormal Psy text that I purchased. Plus test study guide. I took the exams at the end of each chapter to find out my weak areas. Then read weak area chapters.
  12. Anybody take this exam yet? How was it?
  13. Thank you! I would be thrilled with a C! I'm having a hard time keeping interest in this subject. I am still studying.
  14. Exam A scored 51 Exam B scored a 59 Any thoughts?
  15. Anybody that took the EC Abnormal Psychology exam............did you find that the test was harder or easier than the practice tests (from EC)?? I am taking the exam this next Thursday.
