Thinking of moving to NYC
i was oriented for 6 months since i was a new grad. nurse with experience is usually 2-4 weeks depending on how experienced they are. at my place you cant just throw someone in there...lol but from what i see for job openings there are plenty of ed fellowships.

Thinking of moving to NYC
i worked as a paramedic for 16 years before getting hired. it took me 8 months to land the job. It was hard because i was a new grad and some thought my school wasnt " a true nursing school" so there was some hesitation. all in all it worked out for the hospital and myself.

Thinking of moving to NYC
i knoe of some places in florida that are comparable to living in the city. If its something you want to do then do it! its a great place to work . The money is better here than in other places, ive heard Cali is even better and pt loads are lighter, i could be wrong, though. i started 2 years ago and base was 73 k. with night diff and CEN cert im making close to 82k after 2 years. I may leave and go somewhere closer to home due to the high stress and acuity in my hospital. The commute isnt making sense anymore for me ,but we will see. good luck

All who tested in Albany, where did you stay?
i went to albany med and i stayed at the garden inn, it was awesome i didnt even have to go outside. But it was a beautiful time of the year. i went in october 08, and i used the excelsior rates. Took amtrak from nyc. all in all its what you make of it and i hear its pretty standardized no matter where you take it . GOOD LUCK!

Thinking of moving to NYC
Hey ,yeya... i actually work at Lukes and they hired me as an ADN and i work in the ED. They also pay for housing for full time employees so rent can be doable in NYC. although i have lived almost my whole life in the outer boroughs, the city is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE and i love the diversity that the outer boroughs can provide, ie great food , experiences and people. I now actually commute from Long island and the drive isnt bad, its faster than when i drove in from brooklyn...lol. good luck with your search and apply now. i hear they are looking at my hospital

What's the time frame between cpne/graduation
Great job. i was bored out of my mind when i passed. listen if they told you and congratulated you at the facility......YOU DID IT!! If you are bored you can start your resume and start making a plan of attack for looking for a job. Take some time to enjoy something NON EXCELSIOR!!! take a weekend and pamper yourself, buy a gift, something...GREAT JOB!

Advice for ED Nurse on orientation
i totally understand what you are going through, i was a paramedic 16 yrs with CC transport and 911 experience. i was hired as a new grad in october and after the basic hospital orientation my ED orientation started in mid november. its a 6 month orientation for new grads here in my hospital. my orientee handbook states i should be handling 3 non critical pts and to do some care for a critical care pt. My preceptor has thrown me to the wolves so to speak, im taking care of up to 5 non critical at once. i must say that i feel overwhelmed sometimes and i have been feeling quite anxious. I feel like a shark always on the move and if i stop someone will say something and i will get in trouble. i think i have even been up to 8 pts at once, even when the established nurses do maybe 3 or 4 and talk and lounge while i am breaking my back working. I understand that they have earned that right but sometimes i am scared S@#$#less and afraid i will hurt a pt. The culture of nursing is also hard on my psyche, i am an honest and forthright person from dealing with 911 pts and the streets as a way to survive. here in the ER people talk behind your back and then you find out from someone else. i feel like i am not getting an honest assessment of my progress and worried that at the end of my orientation im going to be told that i am horrible and will get fired. I could also use some advice too. they have had me go on the other floors like the icu and peds and L&D. I feel the most comfortable in the ED but i dont know if i belong, thanks for hearing me out too. it sounds like you are doing good and if they have you scheduled to do 2 pts and you are doing well maybe pick up another. my preeptor has me in the habit to pick up pts as soon as they come into the team so i learn to pick up the slack and not be one of those nurses who are lazy. its so hard being the new guy, no one seems to want to help sometimes. my confidence is shot and i think it shows on my face and nurses smell the blood and i feel like they will find a way to get me out the door. what can We do to make this process easier on us without sacrificing pt care?

New Grad, Tough Job Market
my advice to you. i am a new grad in the process of getting hired,( drug test , pharm exams, etc) you need to get a job and get that magic 1 yr of experience. i have 16 yrs pt care in ems as a paramedic but that wont get you anywhere up here. i had to know someone who knew someone and that landed me an interview. i aced the interview but wpuld never have gotten there without the help from a friend. trust me it would be so much easier for you with 1 yr of nursing exp in texas . if you dont know any one to help you in you wont get anycalls back here in nyc. the HRs get thousands of resumes each day and all they do is click next next next. unless they see some experience in the first line of the resume. good luck and just my 2 cents.
