  1. Steff108- how did your interview go? Did you ever hear back??
  2. Steff108, let me know how the interview goes. So got an email back from the HR person and did not get the position in the ED, but she forwarded my application to the hiring manager for the short stay unit, so if she's interested in an interview she'll get back to me. This confuses me a bit because that was the position I initially applied for!!!!!! So now I have to be considered again...though when she called me in for an interview the first time, she verified that it was for the short stay unit. However when I went for the interview it was for the ED. Very confusing and a bit frustrating.
  3. Good luck with the interview. I've emailed the person from HR who interviewed me for a follow up, and I did inquire about the short stay unit, since that's the position I initially applied for. Hopefully I get a response on Monday.
  4. Unfortunately when I went to the interview, they interviewed me for the ED, which was kind of strange. I should have asked about that. I talked to the NM during the interview and she mentioned she was looking for staff for the ED that month, and then the next month (which is this month now) for the Observation unit. I was kind of disappointed about that. I still haven't heard from them and it has been about 3 weeks now since I interviewed. The ED really isn't for me as it is way too fast paced. I did do my senior practicum at an ED at St. E's and learned quite a bit (didn't see any trauma though). We'll see I suppose.
  5. Update: got a call back and they will schedule an interview!!!! So excited and I'm hoping I can get the position! Anyone have information about the unit?
  6. Hi Danielle! I went to nursing school in Amherst and it is considered Western MA. I know Cooley Dickins Hospital is in Northampton. Also there is Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Mercy Medical Center is also in Springfield. Hope this helps!
  7. Hi all! I was wondering if anyone had any information about MGH's new Short Stay Unit. From what I hear it's going to be 18 beds with patients staying less than 24 hours (many coming from the ED). Has it opened yet? How many nurses are they looking for? Thanks for any information you may have!
  8. Thanks for the responses. Does anyone have the contact information for 8D or 6E/7EW unit??? If anyone has that information you can PM me. I'm trying to get in touch with someone on any updates on any new positions that may be available. Thanks!
  9. Unfortunately my hospital isn't hiring new grads at this time. Good luck with the job hunt though! I know I didn't get my first position until 4 months after I graduated and passed boards!
  10. Hi Chapo84. Yeah I figured it would be awhile. Are you an experienced nurse? I have 6 years of RN experience and just looking for a change.
  11. Hi all, Still job searching and actually applied to a position at Brigham and Women's last week. Anyone know what 8D is? The description said it was a surgical ICU but other than that didn't really specify. They had like 4 positions open for nights (variable nights as they describe it). I also applied to 6E, 7EW a coupe of weeks ago- I guess its a cardiac surgery unit (which I'm interested in!) but haven't heard back yet. Anyone work in these units that can provide more information and any positions available. Thanks!
  12. Thanks for the post ivyleaf! Unfortunately can't afford to work per diem right now. Still haven't heard anything from either position but noticed a position in the cardiac surgical step down unit and went ahead and applied. I love cardiac and if I can't get into the cardiac surgical ICU now, the step down unit would be a good opportunity. Now comes the waiting game again!
  13. Thanks for the reply PediLove2147! I haven't heard anything from MGH so I'm assuming I wasn't considered. Does your friend work at MGH?
  14. Thanks for the reply! I've been working on a vascular surgical unit for almost the past 6 years. I know that they hire mostly internal candidates with ICU experience......when I applied it stated that it was preferred but not required. So I thought maybe I would have a chance. It's tough though! It does make sense to just move on to an ICU at my current hospital but no positions at this time. I'm just getting burnt out and need a change. Thanks again for you reply!:)
  15. Hi! Haven't posted in a long while, but just looking for some advice. I have been a nurse for 6 years and work in a surgical floor. I've always wanted to work at MGH and noticed they had a couple of positions in the ICU- ICU is where I want to work eventually. I applied to the cardiac ICU and neuro ICU as they had openings. I have applied to MGH in the past and it seems almost impossible to get a job there! I applied to the cardiac ICU 3 weeks ago and the neuro ICU almost a couple of weeks ago and haven't heard anything back yet. Anyone have any advice??? I applied as an external candidate and I understand they give preference mostly to internal candidates. Thanks!
  16. Mass General Hospital.
  17. I went to UMass Amherst for nursing and graduated in 2006. I actually did a few clinicals in Boston and currently work in a Boston hospital. She can definitely get into the Boston job scene, but I'm sure you've seen from several threads here its hard finding a job around here as a new grad. If she's looking for a cheaper school, definitely stick with UMass Amherst. It really doesn't matter which school you go to, you can still get a job in Boston- you just have to be very persistent due to this economy. I wish your daughter the best of luck in whatever she decides!
  18. I work at Beth Israel and actually they are starting to hire some nurses now. There were lay offs last year but now that the census has gone way up recently, the hospital seems to be doing decently now financially. I think you are better off taking the full time position, only because working per diem isn't always stable. I'm sure whatever decision you will make will be the right one. Good luck!
  19. I think it may be be floor specific whether staff work 8 hour or 12 hour shifts. Though if you work 40 hours its usually 2 8's and 2 12's. I'm currently working 40 hours but will cut back to 36 hours hopefully in September (which at BIDMC if you work at least 30 hours you're still considered full time). Hopefully something comes along for you!
  20. I work at Beth Israel. Been there for almost 4 years as an RN (started as a new grad there). I'm not sure how much you'd get since you have 6 years of experience. My guess would be in the 30ish/hr range since thats how much I'm making now. Good luck on the job hunt! What positions were you looking at?
  21. April is right. BIDMC is a non-union hospital.
  22. That sounds better than my floor...those ratios are actually decent. On days on the floor I work in a nurse can have up to 5 patients during the day and its 5-6 during the night. But sometimes if we are a nurse short, then its 7 with one nurse with 8 patients during the night! Good thing this doesn't happen often now. Our floor is high acuity as well and its vascular surgery. Lots of heavy patients.
  23. I would give it some more time. I definitely know how you feel though! Some people have said to at least stay for a year, but if you feel you are that miserable then it's definitely not worth the stress. Where do you work and what kind of floor do you work in?
  24. When did you take the exam? Your name may not be showing up because they usually don't update the statuses on the weekends. I'm from MA too and when I took my exam almost 3 years ago, I had taken it on a Thursday. I got my quick results on Saturday, and my name wasn't posted until Tuesday. Hope this decreases your anxiety a bit!
  25. The following schools come to mind in the Boston area for BSN: Simmons College Northeastern University Boston College UMASS Boston Don't have much info on these schools as I went to UMASS Amherst for my BSN. Hope this helps though!
