'Unhealthy' nurses...bad examples?
Reminds me of a quote from my late-great Dad, "It takes all kinds and unfortunatley there are all kinds!"

'Unhealthy' nurses...bad examples?
In an ideal world, all nurses and doc's etc..... would lead perfect healthy lifestyles. We live in an imperfect world and make the best of it. In my mind being human makes us good nurses, we're the ones who watch out for the "whole person". The fact that some of us are more visably imperfect doesn't make us ineffective.

grrrrrrrrrr.........
Unfortunatley I have been in the hospital many times with family members since I became a nurse, one was after my Mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer after I had taken care of her for years because she had alzheimers and profuria cutanea tartar (I'm sure I spelled that incorrectly) Anyway, I only give you all this history to tell you I have alot of experience on both sides of the fence at the same time. I never tell staff I am medically experienced. In my experience, when you tell the nurses or doctors that you get one of two reactions, relief that they don't have to explain every little thing to you and/or oh no, she is waiting for me to do something wrong. I erred (sp?) on the side of listening to explanations I didn't need. When I NEEDED to speak up of course I did. I have also had pts. whose family are Dr., nurse, PT, EMT etc............. I try not to focus on them but it is hard when they start with "Im a.............." Just try to remember what everyone is there for and that the patients family sometimes needs alot of reassurance that we are all there to help the patient no matter who they are or what their education. Also try to remember that you are a nurse but this is your loved one, you may be a tad sensitive. If the patient is being cared for let the staff do it their way, your loved one needs your focus to be on them.

LVN to RN salary in Austin
Does anyone have a feeling for what the salary is for a new RN after 12 yr. as LVN in LTC, all in austin? I would like to get away from LTC but not real interested in hospital work (unless it pays really well!) I think my niche is Hospice but don't feel comfortable with going to school and then making less money, my family is a consideration. Was making $23+ hr working prn as an LVN. Is it unresonable to think I will make more as an RN with benefits? Am willing to start lower and work up but hoping with experience it will be faster. I'm working on clinicals now, won't graduate 'till next year.Would appreciate any input, be honest please!!!

What are the item(s) you need most for nursing school?
Does anybody else like the "Incredible Easy" series? I personally subscribe to the magazine and have the NCLEX book.

Paramedics who 'put down' nurses
Arrogance ins't confined to any race, creed or profession. I have run across arrogant Dr's, paramedics, emt's, firefighters, grocery clerks, wait staff, nurses............the list goes on. Let it slide when it doesn't matter (pride) speak up when it does (pt. safety, professionalism). Just because you pass the profeciency test doesn't mean you pass the personality test! Most of us know we work together, the rest aren't paying attention and sometimes need a smiley reminder. Gross generalizations are grossly inaccurate. There is a place for all of us. I like the saying, "You don't have to blow out my candle to make yours burn brighter" We are bigger than this kind of thing! ;)

Med Errors
I clarified an order for a nurse once, the pts blood sugar was 200 and the order was hand written, 5U, the nurse thought it looked like 50 units reg and rightly questioned it. This is LTC, they do it all the time. It's a good thing that U isn't acceptable for units anymore. Do the Doc's know ?

Fired for refusing to draw blood without an order.
you did the absolute right thing. i personally thank you for upholding the correct standard of nursing. if we all leave our standards at the testing center once we pass the boards, we make life alot harder and more dangerous for all nurses and patients. being the one left to deal with the fallout is lonely, that's the reason for this forum. you're not alone. don't ever allow a screwed up administration or system let you question the core of your standards. nursing standards are not just to cover our ass, that's how we protect our patients, patient centered care is the hallmark of nursing. you are a real nuse. you weren't the one to fix this place, you must be needed somewhere else. the high standards you practice are needed and wanted somewhere, don't give up. we all need you.

What are the item(s) you need most for nursing school?
I've been an LVN for 12 yrs. now in school for my RN. Here is what I keep in my pockets or have on my person every day at clinicals or work: -Birkenstocks on my feet -only click pens to avoid staining my scrubs -a small spiral (fits in the pocket $.50 cost) to write down labs, Dr. orders in a pt. room, phone numbers, codes, labs etc.... -a sharp non expensive pair of scissors (they get lost easy!) -any color sharpie to mark speci's. and dressings -a littmann stethoscope -a highlighter -a pen light (I use a really small duracell flashlight, does'nt turn on in my pocket and wear out) -a pack of altoids This makes for big pockets and a few remarks but makes life a lot easier! Hope it helps! I keep a little zippered pencil bag from one of my kid's school with extras of everything in my bag in the break room. T.
