What are the rules regarding a cna staying over until the next shift relief comes in? What if the current cna has worked 16 hours? Are they still required to stay over until the next cna relief comes in?

You all have been very helpful to me. More than you know. Again, this was my very first time experiencing someone's drug seeking behavior like this. But I knew if I prayed about this, the Lord would come through. He sent all of you to respond to my post. :) I just got home from work, and as usual, that particular patient was wanting her prn phenergan elixir, prn benadryl, and prn combivent at the time she could have it. And like you guys stated, "I documented, documented, and documented." If anyone else have anymore suggestions, please send them my way. Pleasseeeee! Thank you all soooo much.

The reason they accepted her into our facility is because she didn't have anywhere else to go. She's been kicked out of other long term care facilities. She has no family. She was an orphan. She's her own primary contact. And as I stated before, it's just not painkillers she seek, she wants all meds. When she was admitted into our facility, everyone knew she was a drug abuser and it's documented. My thing is, I just want to protect me and my license by doing the right thing. So I have been documenting everything. This is the first time I've encountered a person like her. I just want to be in the right. You know? Her physician is very much aware of her behavior. Uh, oh!!! Thank you so much for replying. The patient's dilaudid is routine. Before the patient came to the north side, she was on south. They had orders for her to go to pain management, but she kept changing her mind and then refusing to go. And after 3 times, they wouldn't except her. It's just not pain meds she's interested in, it's all meds that can cause the drowsiness effect. Right now, her main thing is the Phenergan Elixir and Benadryl. She has faked her cough so long, and now she may be serious. Her Phenergan Elixir is 2 tsp every 4 hours prn and her Benadryl is 25 mg 2 tabs every 6 hours. After she recieves that, she comes back to the nurses station again, c/o shortness of breath, in which she has prn combivent and prn albuterol/atrovent inh.

I need a professionals help on showing me the right way to protect myself and my license. I am an lvn and I work at a nursing home. We have a 46 year old female that's a patient there. Her history states she was a heavy drug user and seeker before she was admitted into our facility. The problem is, the physician gives her whatever she wants. For example, some of her routine meds are dilaudid, soma, duragesic patches, tegretol, etc. Next she complained that she has a cough that robitussin want help. So he puts her on prn phenergan elixir(which is also an antihistamine), then she c/o itching due to her patches, he then puts her on prn benadryl. Two days ago she called the doctor's office herself and stated she had oral pain because the dentist saw her. The doctor's nurse called our facility and gave a t.o. for hydrocodone. The only problem there was, the dentist didn't do any oral procedure on her. And she had never complained of pain to us. The patient frequently comes to the nurses station asking for different meds: phenergan elixir, benadryl, combivent, etc. She just about wants every prn drug she has. My question is: what do I do to protect myself and my license? she has orders for these meds and she makes the complaints. She also has a drug book in her room. She's very smart. I try to make the best judgement, but it's hard when the patient and the doctor agree on everything. When she complains of a problem, do I give her prn or refuse her? How do I deal with a very drug smart, drug seeker and be in the right with my Texas state? Please help me someone. Ro

Hi, sorry it took me sooo long to reply. But yes, the program is difficult to get into. And we usually pass the boards. I believe that in my particular class, everyone passed the nclex-pn except 2. I have been accepted into the RN program twice and I dropped. The first time I dropped was because I was burnout. The second time, I was not willing to put in a 100 % study mode because my son was a senior basketball player getting ready for college. I didn't want to miss supporting him at anything during his last year of high school.:) Now he attends a university in Arkansas, and I lack 5 more classes at PJC before I recieve my associates of science degree. I'm an LVN working on my business administration degree. Yes, the RN program was going to be overwhelming for me. But as I see it, if that's what the LORD wants me to have, I'll eventually get it.:) But this business degree that I'm working on, I can eventually work in hospital administration after I end up finishing at my local university. If you don't mind me asking, how did you prepare for the Hesi exit exam? I just started the RN program and at the end of the Rn program, we must take the hesi and pass with an 850. We only get 3 tries and if we don't pass, we don't take the boards. Whatever info. you could share, it would greatly be appreciated. Thanks, Ro

I'm an LVN who's just been accepted into the RN program. I've been working but I must continue to work. Has anyone worked on weekends, while going to nursing school during the week? If so, how'd you do it? Please help. Ro

I just recently got accepted into the RN Program. I have orientation in over a couple of weeks. At the end of the orientation day, we will have a practice Hesi exit exam but it's not for a grade. It's just to see how much we know. The minimum passing score for the Hesi exit exam for here is 850. Even though it's practice, I want to score at least that. But the real Hesi exam comes after you complete the RN program. You have 3 shots to pass it. And if you don't pass it, you don't get to take RN boards. So my question is this: Can someone out there give me any advice on how to prepare for the Hesi exam? I pray and I have the Hesi book already, but any other preparation techniques will be greatly appreciated. There were quite a few students before me that didn't pass it and I was told that a professor said, "they just forgot about basics." Whoever responds to this thread, God knows that I will be truly appreciative. I was the student who had to drop out of RN school last year due to my husbands surgury. Paris here. I just got my lvn license last year in June. I graduated May 06. They also go by points. The maximum points is 100pts. We didn't have the hesi entrance exam for our lvn program. But if I get accepted into their RN program, I have to have the Hesi exit exam before I can ever take the nclex-rn. What I liked about that school is you can get your lvn license first, and if you decide to continue on to the RN program, it's your choice. Some of us continued on and some of us took a break to get over the stress, burnout, and to earn a little money. ro

Have uncontrollable Faith. You pray, believe that the Lord will give you the desire of your heart. He wants the best for us. You'll be fine. I was the same way when I took my nclex-pn boards. I thought I didn't do well and after the test, I had a talk with the Lord. I said, "Jesus, I know that you didn't put me in that nursing program to fail after all this time." And he didn't. I recieved my LVN license last June. Now I'm waiting to see if I got into the RN program. And once again, I'm believing in the Lord. So, hand in there. Rest, relax, and breathe. Claim it, have uncontrollable faith, and it's yours. The Lord wants us to be successful and have the desires of our hearts. I'll pray for all of you guys. Please pray that I get accepted back into the RN program. I had to drop out last year due to my husband's surgury. But here's a miraculous story for you, for the soul. When I took my nclex-pn, I walked out of the testing center and I just couldn't cry. I said, "Lord, you didn't put me through nursing school all this time for nothing." When I got home and once my husband and children were asleep. It was a little after midnight and I began to pray. I said, "Lord, give me some kind of sign that I passed my boards." He had given me a dream of me in the testing site taking my exam. After the test was over, the computer scream read, "you have successfully passed nclex-pn". I woke my husband up at 2:00 in the morning and he said, "girl, are you crazy?" I said, "the Lord let me know I passed my exam." So that third day I called and got my result. It was as my computer screen read in my dream. Now isn't the Lord good? No, I mean great?

Hello. I just turned my RN application in this past Wednesday. The RN class starts in Summer II (July). So I probably want find out if I was accepted until a month or two has gone by. What a drag, huh? But I could use the prayers. Well, I wish you the best. lol Ro

I've been taking Phentermine for a month and a half. I've had great results. The only side effect that I've had was a very dry mouth. But along with that, I exercise, eat healthy, monitor my vitals, and keep in close contact with my physician. When I went through nursing school, I became stressed and began to eat alot. I picked up 40 pounds very quickly. I became sluggish and I just didn't feel good. When I got off work, all I wanted to do was lie down on the couch and sleep. My BP went from normal to (for ex. 143/104). I had to do something. I decided to talk with my ob/gyn and I started eating right when taking the Phentermine. He did not prescribe the drug to me until my BP was stable. He also told me to limit my white food (bad carbs) when eating. Eating right, excercise, resting, plenty of water, and staying in touch with your physician is VERY important. Your friend needs to see her physician immediately so that he/she can find out what's going on with her. Have she had a history of heart problems or chest pains? Has she gone through stress before the meds? Please encourage her to go to her physician. Feel free to contact me. God Bless. Ro

First of all, I will happily say. Keep the Lord first. You can do all things through him. No matter how impossible it seems at times. I'm an lvn here in Texas. I was nervous before the test, but I prayed. And it all fell through. The sky is the limit for us. All we have to do is believe. Hello, everyone. I had to drop out of the RN program last year because of stress and burnout. The stress was bad enough to cause my grades to suffer. I had to do something. My husband was paying all the bills, my car started to act up and I got another one, my refrigerator went out & I got another one, & then my husband had to have surgery. Well, thanks to my Lord and Savior, everything is back on track in my life. My husband successfuly had his surgery. I'm an LVN so I worked to get everything caught up. My question is, "Has anyone ever had to drop out of the RN program and returned a little later?" And how hard was it to get accepted back in? I attend a junior college in Texas. Can someone please tell me how they prepare and study for a classroom exam? I usually pass but I don't think that I'm studying enough. We have so much material and chapters to read. I can't read all those chapters, it's just to many. I usually score between 75's and 82's. If someone could help me improve my test scores, I would be really happy. Thanks for all the upcoming advice.
