Please Help! Which job would you choose?!
Hospital B!!!!

Nursing setting you up for failure?
It has become very common in the hospital I work at to have one nurse to three patients in the ICU! This is progressive care...not intensive care! Just to save a few dollars.
-
I need 50 ways to get out of my med surg job.
Go in and talk to someone...Dont just not show up! You never know who you will burn a bridge with. It may come back to haunt you...
-
What is the most you've worked (days) without having a day off?
I'm about to start doing 6 12hr night shifts in a row with 8 days off in between...I'll let you know how it goes!!
-
Should I really do this?
I think as long as you are not picky you should be able to find a job. There are always job openings at my hospital but it may not be on the most desirable area
-
Does anyone else like working night shift besides me?
I agree with everyone!!! No physical therapy messing my patient up in bed right after he is turned! No skin team insisting I disturb my resting patient Right Now so they can "assess" their bottom. Too much dayshift drama for me!!!
-
What would you change about Nursing to make it better?
less focus on cleaning up poop....more focus on using our critical thinking abilities!

Uniforms and dress codes
The hospital I work at has a dress code more than uniforms. Nurses have to wear ceil blue pants and whatever top you want. MCTs wear navy pants and respiratoy wears royal blue pants. Its not great when you think about all the cute scrub outfits out there that you want to wear but can't. It is good because you can easily identify the role of people you don't know. Patients and visitors dont get it because they dont pay attention to such things. But it is convenient to know what your coworkers can do, and for them to know who you are as well.
-
does night shift make you fat?
you must burn more calories than you put into your body to lose weight. It may be more tempting to eat fast food or unhealty choices at night because it is more convenient. You just have to decide what you want more....to have a donut/pizza/burger...or to not let "night shift" rule your life...eat healty and exercise even when you work those 12 hour shifts. Its not easy but it pays off in the end!
-
what kind of shoes should I get for nursing school???
Get the Danskos!!!! They are very comfortable (after a short break in period) and you will wear them forever!!!
-
I think I'm too slow for Critical Care...
Stick with it!!! The only way those nurses got to be calm and cool is experience! You will get there!
-
PCRN or CCRN
I agree with CVRN11. The CCRN test has a lot of focus on hemodynamics and asks questions based on Swann ganz measurments: cvp, pa pressure, wedge and svO2. It would be very difficult to answer these types of questions with no hands on experience. I've worked ICU for 3 years and I thought the test was diffucult.
-
Is this the norm or unfair? thoughts and opinions needed!!
Stand your ground! If you feel like you are being treated unfairly, then you probably are. That situation was not the best for the PATIENT or the nurse. If you let people know that they can run over you then they will!

UAB Fall 2010
Hey Paris2010, I spoke with someone who interviewed and got into UAB's montgomery component last year. She said the interview was different from any other interview she had ever had. She said when she got to the hospital to interview, someone gave her a list of 5 values like compassion and integrity. The entire interview was that she had to give an example of a clinical situation when she used each of those values. No personal questions or anything. I have no idea if they willl do interviews the same way this year. She said that 12 interviewed last year and they accepted 6. I'll keep you updated, private message me your email. I can't send private messages.
