Aussie student nurses ? re clinical placement
hi Jax, well firstly, congrats on asking for information from recent students. That alone shows how resonable you are. I wish you were one of my instructors. It is so difficult sometimes in placements. I know of a few things my facilitator did that made is easier for myself & classmates so I'll jot them here for you. I found that by trying to match shy students with nurses who know how to help guide them, they learn to ask more questions this way. on the other hand, more outgoing students or students who seem to want to know everything now (so to speak) enjoy the challenge of nurses who work fast and talk less. Trying to match the students and then giving them more than a couple of shifts with the same preceptor makes it easier for the student to get confidence and also helps them figure out how to ask and to learn by watching as well. As you would know, not every student likes every department or floor. The more the student is informed by thier instructor and the more time they spend learning from people they feel they can trust, the easier and faster they can learn. Encouragement to ask questions. Praise for a job well done when it is (as they need to be told when they get it right). Keeping a diary of their day and giving them a chance to ask what they would like to learn more about. (because it is often what they know they need to learn more of. Some things I found terrible were, Nurses expecting me to know more than I did at the time, making me feel as though I was in the way rather than their to learn. If a student is told by their instructor to ask as many questions as you need to, to get it right, it is better than feeling awful for making mistakes. Being ignored or sent to do just the beds or so called (dirty jobs) and them only, instead of doing a bit of everything. Being told I was wrong in front of other students or patients, instead of one on one with my teacher. I could go on about both sides, I hope some of this helps and I wish you much luck, Im sure you will do a great job !!!

registration in Victoria/Australia-certified copies
hi there Narell, I think when they say a public notary, they are the same as a J.P or Justice of the Peace. If your council has someone who has the licence to stamp certified copies, then that should be fine. I did the same in canada. Good Luck & enjoy Melbourne.

Fifty Ways to Leave Your....
Thankyou for the support Angioplasty. I apprieciate it emensly.. Its so hard. After those 3 interviews with the 3 major hospitals in town. Im a bit of a mess. I have lost faith in myself & I guess Im scared. I will take on board your advice. Its not easy being a nurse in aged care that really loves her job. You come up against so many that are there purely for the money or have been there for so long and would never actually qualify for a job elsewhere. Ive seen so much that breaks my heart and half the girls there actually started in the laundry or kitchen but were dragged to the floor when they were short staffed. Hows that for training. I have worked with the elderly (especially dementia) for over 10 years and then studied on top and yet here I am.. unemployed and disolusioned. I will try again & I wont let them beat me. Believe me when I say that when I win lotto & build a nursing home myself, I will fill it with nurses who actually care & not those who dont. regards & thanks you cheered me up

Fifty Ways to Leave Your....
Reason for Leaving: Basically I was forced out because I was not willing to lower my standards in the care of the elderly. I spoke up to my Don several times, I was bullied with no results. I was loved by the girls I taught (students learning) & hated by the ones who didnt like having to work as my partner because I did thing correctly. Like using machines to lift instead of throwing them over my shoulder. Or actually taking the time to wash and treat people correctly instead of just a quick slap over the groin & face. What did my Don say when I asked why she allowed her residents to be treated so poorly in such an exspensive establishment, she said " maybe your in the wrong industry & shouldnt be a nurse, thier are no points for good nursing". As a result of that meeting & due to a heavy study load to become an RN I asked for two months off to complete my course. I handed in my licence two months later & after 3 years of working for them over 40 hours a week. I was told they had nothing available for them. (I got them 6 girls trained for free by the govt & that was the thanks I got). I thought that was the end of it.. Until I went job hunting. I had great marks and good reports yet failed to be accepted for the next 3 job interviews. Eventually I was told. you may want to change your reference as your previous DON .. has nothing nice to say about you. WHERE AM I NOW.... Un employed and heartbroken. Anyone got any clues as to how I get around this one??

Has anyone had issues with accusations of diverting drugs?
Dear Shelly, I just wanted to say I am thinking of you & pray the truth be told.If you know your innocent of taking narcs, push for whatever tests u can & push hard. I pray this all goes your way. Dont give up on yourself. I was pushed out of a job because I went against nurses doing the wrong thing by elderly residents in thier care, I also noticed an RN signing for morph that never reached a patient in desperate need (many times). When I went to my don I was told there were no points for good nursing, she also said I needed to learn a lesson from having a big mouth. Within a week I went from 50 hours a week to 4 for two months straight. When I applied for positions elsewhere I never got past the first interview. I nearly lost it Shelly, I really nearly did. But after a 6 month break. I am now ready to hit the charge again and look for work. Fight girl.. with all you have in you. Us good nurses need to defend ourselves. Good Luck ..

'Unhealthy' nurses...bad examples?
Hey hang on a minute. IM skinny...... I mean I get asked if Im anorexic..... I do smoke. I dont work out but I didnt choose to be so thin. I just have a high metabolism. I cant help it. I dont care if nurses or anyone for that matter is large. Big is beautiful. Oh and sometimes, especially in aged care it can work to your advantage if your moving people, hehe. But seriously. Dont mind what others say. Its none of thier business. Be yourself, large or small. If your good at what you do and you do it with an ethical, humanatarian attitude and go to work with a smile for others. I'd be glad to have you as my nurse. regards

urgent help-out of scope
thankyou so much for your quick response. I have moved to Medicine Hat in Alberta, my husbands family have a few nurses that work at the major hospital, most of my previous skills however relate more to aged care and a specialty in dementia. Although I want to be able to do both aged and acute care and possibly Mental Health. Any further information.. Please send it my way. Regards Jen

Aussies working in Canada
Dear Ali I can not answer any of your questions but am also an aussie now living in canada. I have yet to apply to be assessed and am trying to work out who to apply to and what to apply for. I am recently graduated with a diploma and medication endorsement. In Qld I was classed and an Endorsed Enrolled Nurse but in Melbourne my title would be RN II. SO I am already confused. Any advice you can give me would be appreciated. Good luck to both yourself & Tim. regards Jen

US RN wanting to move to Canada
Hi. I am a nurse here in Australia, looking to move to alberta as my husbands family are all there. I gave birth to my son in canada but as an aussie I am wondering what I need to do to be able to nurse in Alberta. I think my qualifications here as an endorsed enrolled nurse, is very similar to yours as an LPN. I can do most drugs but not all. who should I contact before coming to canada and does anyone know how hard it will be to get work. most of my past experience is with the elderly, dementia and mental health but I wish to work in acute within a hospital setting. thanks
