  5. I jujst read an article in Nurseweek about this very issue. Go to PROJECTCURE.ORG. They donate "throwaway medical supplies" to developing countries. They have warehouse distribution centers in Denver, Phoenix, Houston, St Paul and Nashville. They have volunteers who collect and sort the supplies into different categories. Check out the December 18th issue of Nurseweek (Mountainwest edition) for more information about this wonderful project.

  7. I would love to see someone research the reason why Nursing does not compensate (value?) nurses for their level of eudcation. The pay seems to be the same for an ADN versus an MSN. Granted there may be more opportunities for a nurse with an MSN versus an ADN but I don't think an MSN is paid much more. Whereas in the corporate "Mans" world an MBA is well valued and compensated. Does this mean we do not value nurses who puruse higher education? Who is responsible for setting this "trend"?
  8. I checked my State Boards, even went through a training program. I did a search for posts in this forum and see there was very little response....maybe I am in the wrong field and there is a need for someone to write a book of lesson plans????? hahahah I checked books, googled every possible term, I see very little out there but there has to be something out there somewhere. Teachers don't reinvent the wheel every time they teach a class. Is the concept of teaching in nursing so new that we haven't established a solid knowledge base and resources in this area? Yes I realize we have been teaching patients for years but what about others?
  9. I work prn but am signed up with several different employers. I do site reviews for HMOS, Life INsurance physicals, Wellness clinics, Nurse Delegation, Proctor exams, Chart Reviews, Flu Clinics. I LOVE it. Lots of variety, low stress which makes me a very happy camper. There isnt a day when I am not LOVING what I am doing. I love the autonomy and variety and I actually look forward to working. I have been an RN for 30 years and have had my share of bad jobs-wish I figured this out years ago so you are way ahead of the game. Good luck

  11. I also read about this. That's terrible that the doc made an incorrect diagnosis giving her pain meds. How incompetent is that? I knew of another situation where a researcher was transporting a monkey and the monkey spit on her and it went in her eye. She went to the emergency room for an evaluation as she was having problems. The ER doc didnt order the appropriate tests and sent her on her way. She was dead a few days later at the age of 24. She contracted Herpes B that attacked her brain. This was a well documented issue in researchers working with primates. Why did that doc fail to diagnose her correctly? It's a shame that when we are in the most vulnerable and weakest position that we cant trust those caring for us. Scarey
  12. karen 1. what does your job description read? i would follow it 2. do you have a risk manager you can talk to about this? that's their job--to identify risks and offer solutions 3. what does your policy say about where ill employees are to go for treatment? er? employee health? if so refer them there. same for visitors? is there a policy and if not, rally a group of folks to write one. 4. i believe under hipaa managers should not be disclosing confidential information to you about other employees. you don't have a treating relationship with them. can you quote hipaa? 5. next time someone comes with an emergency i would call 911. if your manager gets angry tell them you did the best you could under the circumstances and you didn't have time to consult with them. if you see your relationship with her goes sour because they feel you went over their head, i would evaluate whether you even want to work there anymore. 6. it sounds like yours is a close knit group? maybe others feel they can approach you with these issues because you are very friendly? i would set boundaries on the work relationship. intially it will take a lot of energy to establish those boundaries. however, i think you will expend less energy setting those boundaries than the energy you are wasting now by chasing your tail and having little to show for it. i will share an incident i was involved in. i worked in employee health. it was the hospital's policy that employees had to go to their personal docs for treatment of illness and non-work related inujuries. employees would constantly come to my office and ask to be treated and tested for this or for that. i felt like a heel having to be the bad guy and send them away. i was consistent and treated everyone the same, no waivering on my position. an employee came to me one day with a sore throat. i told her she had to go to her doctor. explained why she was better off doing so. she was mad filed a complaint and complained to her colleagues. i used to walk down the hall of the hospital and feel like i was the most hated person there. anyway management backed me. when she went to her doctor she found out she had a tumor in her carotid artery. she had emergency surgery. from that point on, i was well respected and she apologized. my job from that point on was a piece of cake and i was able to get on with the job i was hired to perform. it would have been unfair of me to offer her substandard care. there was no way i could have determined she had a tumor in her carotid artery. i didn't have the right equipment or training to know what to tests to run. i also didn't have the authority as an rn to order the test needed to make a diagnosis and was not authorized to even make a diagnoses. in other words it would have been a disservice to offer her a "half ass" job-she deserved more. i may have felt better about myself not having to say no no no all the time but that would have been selfish and unprofessional. in your down time, i would calmly think about each of these problems and use the nursing process adpie to solve them-i bet that by doing that in a systematic manner before these issue arise, you will have found a solution. good luck
  13. Was this guy an RN or a medical assistant that journalists lumped into the "Nurse" category? That really infuriates me when they do that....report some horrible story about a "nurse" who killed someone when they weren't even a licensed nurse in the first place.
