Doctors "firing" patients
Wow what a story. I can completely understand how you feel. I would want to rip into him also BUT....if you ever run into him I would probably just politely say "I accept your decision to no longer care for my family but could you please give me the rationale behind your decision?" And leave it at that. If you are sure that you will run into him I would wait for the right time and ask him. As far as seeing you on the floor doing clinicals...He should be professional. I would not persue a conversation at clinicals as this would look bad for you. Good luck on everything. Jill

Doctors "firing" patients
I have to admit that I had never heard of a doctor firing the patient but when I worked in the office I learned it. It depends on the type of practice and the doctor if it happens more frequently or not. I have to admit that I have encouraged the firing of a few patients. Jill

Active Learning Strategies for New Nurse Educators
I am a new LPN instructor...how do I make it interesting? I have no idea what I am doing. I have read the chapters and go over it but it seems like I am just highlighting out of the book and honestly they could read that themselves. What do I do? Please don't think I am crazy it is just that this was sorta thrown on me and I want to teach just not sure how to do it. Make sense? Jill

money
I am new to the area and have discovered that the pay for RN's is about the same here if not lower than in Oklahoma. Sentara does have good benefits but the pay is low. It is obvious that they have a monopoly on the medical field and can set the pay at what they want because of the monopoly. I did accept a job with Sentara but was working in an office and was basically a glorified secretary. Needless to say after 2 weeks I put in my notice since I am a nurse and don't care to file charts for an hour a day. I was making 17.50/hour and had to negotiate greatly to get that much. (I had prior experience as an LPN) I was told that in the offices here you don't get as much because of the luxury of working 8-5 Monday through Friday. Not sure if that helps anyone but just the information I found out as a new RN to the area. Jill

Starting Oncology position next month.....
Sandra, Just read your post and was wondering if you could share some of your experience with me. I start a job in a hematology/oncology office on March 28 and have no experience in the field. It is my understanding that I will be giving chemotherapy to patients as an outpatient basis. I am a new RN but have been a LPN for years. However, my experience is not related to oncology field. I lack experience also in IV, mediports, etc. If you could offer any helpful hints I would greatly appreciate it. I am very nervous about my first day. Jill

Bon Secours v. Sentara v. Obici?
I just moved to the area and was wondering if you knew any neurosurgeons that are looking for an office nurse. I have worked for 2 neurosurgeons for almost 4 years and love it. I know that most office jobs are not advertised and that is why I am asking. I am an LPN but just graduated as an RN :balloons: and will take my boards in Janurary. Thanks, Jill

Medical Assistants in the office
I have only had limited contact with CMA and the ones that I have had contact with I am not impressed with them or their attitude. A student who was doing her intership at our clinic tried to tell me how to do my job when I had worked there for over 3 years. Needless to say I don't have much respect for her. Another one who was training in our office tried to tell me that I was going to file!! I am the nurse and I work the back office and I don't file. The other students that have been in our office were always late or didn't show or had to be gone. The were scared of the back office and only wanted to do paper work. Sorry to stereotype them but to me I am not impressed and hope that Dr's realize one of the reasons for increased malpractice insurance. Also do these CMA's know that they may think it is cool to play nurse but along with that is being sued if you don't know your job and trying to do a job you are not qualified for?

Need Advice
I just thought that I would stop in one last time and say goodbye. I am no longer employed in the doctors office. I want you all to remember that even though you trust someone, work your butt off that in the end they will do whatever is best for them not the employee. I learned that the hard way. My bosses chose not to work with my schedule so that I could complete my degree and get my RN. I felt that because I never missed work, always went above and beyond my job description that I when I needed something that they would help me out, instead they had the clinic director tell me. It hurt because I worked side by side with them for over 3 years and they never said a word, didn't come to me. l was told that I was a great nurse and they wouldn't ever get another one as good as me but that meant nothing because I am still without my job. I am not sure what I will do at this point. I am still trying to absorb all of it. So do your job and don't go beyond because it will get you no where...at least that is what happened to me. Jill

Need Advice
I have posted here many times and want to warn you that this may be a long post but I need advice from other office nurses. I have worked in this office for over three years. I work for 2 neurosurgeons that are brothers. Even though I feel that recently I have been treated badly I still like the guys very much and think that they are good doctors. I started going to school when I went to the office and I have been there since the office started. I am the only employee that has been there the whole time. I NEVER miss work. It is so rare that you might as well say never. But....I started my clinicals this year and so had to start missing some work. (I go to clinicals only on Monday and Tuesdays. (most of the time I leave at 12:30 but occassionaly all day). I have 7 weeks left and I am off for the summer and then in the fall it is just half days. Because I have known about my schedule change for some time I tried and the office manager (who is the brother's mom) tried to get someone in the office to help me out on those two days. The hospital said they didn't have clinical float nurses. (this is proven later to be a lie). I knew that if I just quit that the office would have great difficulty so it was best for me and best for them that I stay and have someone help out on my days that I went to school. Anyway...recently I was called by the hospital for a meeting and was told that I am there to serve the doctors and I am not able to do that and can't work in that office anymore. They offered me a float nurse position in the clinic and said that the ones that they have keep very busy. (if you read above they told us that they don't have them) This hurt coming from the hospital and not my doctors that I have worked closely with. I said fine but I am only staying for 2 weeks. They said we don't have to do anything right away. NOT I was mad, hurt, angry, confused you name it I felt it. Finally the last days in the office the doctors talked to me. I asked them if they was ready for what was going to happen. I am the only nurse there and I keep very very busy. I do all the authorizations for the surgeries and follow up appointments, see post-op patients and TONS more. They complimented me on being the best nurse that they will ever have and that they will probably not ever find a nurse as good as me....blah, blah, blah I don't want to float to other offices, pediatrics, family practice isn't for me. I like neurosurgery! :0( So here is my question.....I am taking my vacation time which is 4 weeks and I was wondering what the chances are that doctors will suck up and realize that they have made a mistake and call me back to work for them??? Or do I swallow my pride and go float for the clinics or do I file for unemployment? Honestly I want to go back to where I am comfortable. Talking to the doctors when I left the one said, "well float to our office" I reply you fired me remember!! The other one said well stay and work then. Again I reply you fired me remember!!! Help me out I am confused and I know that this may seem like a big mess because it is. Usually when you are fired you are fired but I stayed 2 weeks. And so it all is confusing and I could use some help from other office nurses as what to do. So I am asking your advice.

electronic medical records
]undefined I have been thinking about this and think that it would be great if I had a computer at my desk. I could type alot faster than writing. I think that I would document more of my small conversations with my patients and keep better records. I have even thought about telling the hospital that I would be willing to be the test nurse if they want to try it. I know that my one doctor would like it and maybe even both of them. I am for it. Sciatica....help!!
I work neuro and have a herniated L5-S1 disk that gives me problems frequently. We prescribe Medrol Dose Pack followed by NSAIDs. Also two other good meds are Skelaxin during the day and Zanaflex for bedtime. If mine acts up this is what I take. Once you get it under control then make sure you stay in shape that more helpful than people give credit. Hope you get to feeling better. Believe me I know how you feel. :kiss

injured on the job-need advice
I work with worker's comp daily and especially back injuries. I work for two neurosurgeons who take work comp. What kind of surgery are you having would depend on if you can work afterwards on the ICU floor. Not everyone gets an attorney, just make sure that you don't get ripped off. I also have a bad back but not willing to go under the knife. There are many jobs available to you as a nurse that doesn't require lifting. Don't think that you will not be able to be a nurse anymore. Make sure that the hospital offers you one of those jobs. They may try to tell you that you have to be able to do the same as a floor nurse and not give you a job. If they try that make sure you mention Lawyer and get one fast. If you have any questions about your surgery or work comp just e-mail me. I deal with this on a daily basis.

CHristmas..I need some help
I had a flower arrangement sent to their homes. I can relate not knowing what to get them because they have everything but I thought that it would be something that would come to their home and suprize them and they could enjoy it for a few days. They are guys but they would still see it and their wives would enjoy it too.

Drowning in flu - hang in there, folks!
I don't work family practice so don't have patients with the flu but I got it myself and it was H***. I haven't been that sick in probably 7 years. I went home twice from work and one day said no way am I coming into to work. I stayed in bed for 3 days and my fever wouldn't go below 100. But I didn't go to the doctor just waited it out as I know that it is a virus. No, I didn't get my flu shot as normally I don't get sick, but maybe next year. Hang in There, Jill

Medical Assistants in the office
I called the instructor on Monday since she wouldn't talk to me all day. The instructor was glad that I called her and completely understood where I was coming from. She agreed that she was out of line to question how I do my job after being in our office only a short time. And she was upset that she went to the office manager and caused friction in our office. She is going to talk to her and let me know by the end of the week.

Medical Assistants in the office
I looked and I didn't see that it was accredited. What does that mean? I feel like I had an open mind towards this girl, I even suggested that she may be right for the position in our office. I am going to school and need someone to cover when I am at class two afternoons a week. Also I need someone to learn my job as no one can cover if I am ever gone. I thought that everything was okay until the meeting and that is why I am blowen away and not sure how to handle it. I was asked to be on the advisor board and going to attend a luncheon on Friday. Do I mention this to her instructor? Do I just ignore it? I am just not sure. I do feel that it was very out of line and inappropriate for a student to question the way a person does their job after only a few weeks in the office. I have been there for 3 years and was even the office manager for a long time. I appreciate your feed back. Jill

Medical Assistants in the office
I don't really have an opinion but on weither they should or shouldn't be in the office but have an incident I would like to get some feed back on. We have had students in our office for clinicals. So far it hasn't been really good but we said that we (the girl in front and I, since we deal with them mostly) would try it one more time. Anyway, we have had this one for a maybe three weeks. There are three people in our office and the office manager. (I am the nurse) This medical assistant STUDENT starts complaining on how I asked her to do something and why didn't I do it myself....and she continues to say that when I was gone she was able to do it and why didn't I. I was shocked. I thought that this was way out of line. Yes, she probably did have time since she doesn't do authorizations, answer phone triage, call in medications, talk to physical therapist, case workers and etc that I do since I have been doing my job for 3 years. So my question is what would you do? I wasn't mad because she was too stupid to be mad at. I know what I do and I know what she does. But what do I do now. I am going to go to RN school in January and the office has told her that we will need someone to fill in when I am gone to clinicals. Give me your thoughts....

new problem how do you manage calls in your office
I have been there many times. First realize that you are not being rude they are. Simply have the person tell them that it will be 7:00 pm (or whatever time you want) before you will get that medication called in and that they should call the pharmacy after that time. And remind them that you do require a 48 hour notice. You are not being rude they are being demanding. Just Friday I had a mother call in for pain medication and no lie about 15 minutes at the most call me back and ask me if I had called it in yet because we closed at noon and it was almost noon. I had the front office tell her it would be 3:00 pm before I could call it in. That way she didn't bother me again. If they get upset which they will just tell them (or have the front office) that you will get to it as soon as you can. And yes, they will do it again but after a few times it works. They are like kids and you have to teach them who is in charge---You. Also I put their chart on the bottom of my stack each time they call if they make me made......(that is just me)

new problem how do you manage calls in your office
I can understand. Have them answer the phone, tell the person calling that we need to take a message and will call them back when they have time and explain that it may be several hours or even after hours. I know that you can not put other offices on hold but most patients can wait until you have a minute. It may mean that you will have to stay late and return phone calls but hopefully you turn off the phones at 5 and so you can call them and they can't call you. It goes faster when you are just doing outgoing calls. Just a suggestion. Jill
