  1. Hi! I’m a military spouse and also recently had a baby (5months). I just hit exactly 1 year of nursing, and my employer (HCA) allowed me to go PRN right before I had my baby. I’ve been having a lot issues with childcare and called out last weekend for an incentive shift (I was picking up to go in as a help all nurse for 4hrs).. I recently found out my husband will be deploying which means I’ll have to resign from my position. I was wondering if HCA would ban me for future employment (at other locations) if I called out for the next two shifts?? If I had childcare available I would definitely go in, but with everything going on..I probably can’t. I’m concerned that as a new nurse this will look awful to future employers. What would you do?
  2. Hello! I’m a new grad on a busy Medsurg floor and also super pregnant (due in August). Our ratio is 5:1 and no techs. My unit is super busy and I’m officially newly off orientation. I may be reading too much into it (maybe just emotional from my hormones) but I feel like other nurses are annoyed when I ask for help with lifting patients or patient care. I think I do a great job doing things on my own but sometimes when I have a question or need help with something I’m new at, one nurse in particular(she’s normally charge) will tell me to go do it myself or figure it out. I’m open to the challenge of being more independent but I’m also still nervous and don’t want to mess up. This has made me more reluctant to ask her anything which is frustrating because she’s usually the only one available/ around the nurse station. I want to show others that I can be independent and work efficiently just like others. But there’s no hiding the fact that I’m huge and pregnancy aches and pains are starting to hit me hard. My question is.. am I wrong for asking for help when I’m getting my pt up for the first time? What shouldn’t I ask? As a new grad I feel “dumb” a lot and hate feeling like I’m asking dumb questions. Any suggestions on having a smooth transition without a preceptor?
  3. Please consider signing up for Hurst Live review or Mark K live review. I too felt the same way when I read Saunders.. it seems like you need to get deep into content and then use to Saunders to reinforce any areas you do not understand. I used UWorld, Mark K, and some Youtube videos to prepare for NCLEX.. luckily I passed my first time but then again I’m a Dec.2020 grad. I think the biggest thing you need to learn other than content is how to answer NCLEX style questions. Which patient is priority? What is priority for the nurse to do in a or exhibiting xyz symptoms. Knowing these thing will really help you understand how to answer NCLEX questions.
  4. Hey!! I’m currently studying for the NCLEX with only UWorld right now. do you feel like any of the things you listed helped you retain the content more? If you don’t feel comfortable answering now, can you come back after you take the NCLEX to share what prepared you the most? For UWorld I’m doing the questions and reading and writing the rationales.
  5. Do the Learning systems 3.0 (adaptive quizzes) for whichever area you’re taking the test for. @Benji
  6. I took my Exit ATI yesterday and made a 78% (97% chance of passing the NCLEX) I made a 60 on Comp practice A and a 70 on comp practice B. I created a study guide using my ATI book from the notes provided above, listened to Cathy parkes videos while driving, utilized Learning systems 3.0 (adaptive quizzes), board vitals, and used another comprehensive study guide provided by my school. if you’re not familiar with the way ATI will ask a question then start doing practice questions. Last but not least, remember ADPIE & ABC’s. Good luck!!
  7. Congratulations!! Thank you so much for coming back and sharing your experience. the anxiety is real!! our school makes us retake all of our practice ATI's along with board vitals, and doing the learning systems. anyways thanks for much for sharing!
  8. Please let me know how it goes!! I’m taking mine in a few weeks.
  9. That’s interesting. My husband is an Active duty officer as well and I have been told that HCA is military friendly and will not legally bind us to those contracts. Now I’m needing to double check!! I remember reading this article last year and being excited to apply at HCA. Check it out! https://hcatodayblog.com/2019/07/13/hca-healthcares-commitment-to-hiring-100000-military-spouses/
  10. I’m struggling with confidence in my nursing program and I know it shows badly at clinical. I’m constantly second guessing myself. I have so much anxiety going on in my head that I second guess or end up forgetting to do something. I have a B in the courses I’m currently taking including my clinical course, but I get so scared of everything when I have to perform in front of my instructor. It feels like my mind is going 100miles/hr and I’m just rushing to finish the task. I don’t understand why I do this. I know I’m not stupid. For example; I had to give a subcut heparin shot and was second guessing the angle, or pinching the site..like I feel so dumb sometimes.. I know my peers (clinical group) are not dealing with the same thing as most of them have been a tech for years so it “seems” like the hands on portion of nursing school comes so easy for them. I constantly find myself second guessing that if I ever made it out of nursing school should I even work in a hospital? Will I ever develop the level of critical thinking I need to be a great nurse? Am I smart enough? Why am I letting my anxiety get the best of me? Do my instructors think I’m dumb? Why Am I so forgetful on simple tasks? Is something seriously wrong with me? I have less than 1yr till graduation, I am under a lot of stress with home life, one of my instructors think I have ADHD and this week my Dr prescribe an antidepressant for a different reason, but I feel it has helped calm my nerves as well. I’m not sure if I’m venting or looking for advice but I’m just tired of feeling stupid I guess.
  11. It’s for actual skills written exam and not the check off. I’m starting to think my problem is that I’m not goood at answering Nursing questions. I tend to miss “select all that applies “ or “first priority” questions. It’s very frustrating because I know I’m not stupid. A person from a cohort before me suggested I try practice questions on quizlet as well.. so I will be doing that today.. I understand the material but I guess I’m not applying it properly. Apart from quizlet, any suggestions on where I can find practice questions ? I do the ones in our ATI book, but it only has about 5 questions per chapter.
  12. I just failed my second skills exam. We have 3 exams total plus a final exam. I’m so overwhelmed that I won’t pass the course. So far I have used quizlet and read but I don’t know why the information isn’t sticking in my brain or if I’m just forgetful. I don’t know what to do anymore. i have a skills check off coming up this week and now I’m even more worried that I may not do well because I keep failing these exams.
