New RN, how to save face
We’ve all said stupid things before. I thought sarcoidosis was a made up disease on house since the throw it around so much. I work ICU, I was giving report to the intensivist and he goes “maybe it’s sarcoidosis”. I bust out laughing. He was like “what’s so funny?” I was like “oh ur serious... I thought that was a made up disease off of house?” he looked at me like I was nuts but I had to be honest. I was like “what?! You never had a slow moment before? Don’t judge me doc!” And we still laugh about that moment now. We all have these moments, I just laugh at myself though because i can’t possibly know everything. What do i look Ike? WebMD Over here?? I say all that to say, don’t be so hard on yourself. I have so many embarrassing moments in that ICU I should write a book lmao good luck! You got this!

Pumping at work
I am also a pumping mom, I worked on a busy ICU. They have to provide you with a room and adequate time as well As reasonably accommodate any additional needs you may have. This was part of the affordable care act. I spoke with my manager about my dilemmas- not having anyone to cover my patients so I could pump, getting behind on charting etc. she was kind enough to provide a wow For me to use while I pumped in a private room. I wouldn’t suggest pumping at the nurses station, you really want a clean private area to pump in. Ask your manager or HR to provide you with a wow or laptop so you can chart and pump...I told them i was having to stay late and it wasn’t causing overtime so they jumped on the idea right away! good luck!

Which social platform are nurses using most?
I use ig but I just follow a few Nps who share their experiences. They May give tips but of course you double check everything to make sure it’s EBP. I think some people are taking this survey a bit seriously. I don’t think anyone is turning to social media as a real source of reference. Obviously we use research and guidelines for that.

2015 Amelie Hollier CDs- Could I still use these to study for my boards in 2020?
I actually had the 2018 version and then 2019 came out right after, they were kind enough to exchange it for me but I did notice a few differences in the content and some additional content was included based on changes made to the exams I guess. I would recommend using the Leik book as well. Hollier gives a good way to remember the basics but Leik gives you everything else you need to pass ? good luck!

PASSED AANP FNP
Oh ice! I have to send them my official transcript so I can get mine ? yea Leik is something else, God bless that woman! She even had more tips, questions and info on her site for free. Apea is good for auditory learners or people who need to learn on the go because you can listen and do it all from your phone. I just don’t think I would have passed with her alone. Leik recommends her book or review plus another source but I think her book is enough lol congrats again on passing!

New Grad NP feeling Overwhelmed, Scared
I don’t think there are any legal issues regarding doing extra hours. My school encouraged it. We just couldn’t do it while school was on break because the agreements end when the semester ends. But you can do as many as you want during g your semester.

PASSED AANP FNP
Hey so I took the test today and PASSED! I’m so glad it’s over lol. I started passively studying in January just listening to APEA review in the car and while doing housework when I could lol started intense studying around March for exit exam in May but I told myself I would study like it’s boards so I could take my test earlier. I took a break May 1st till about May 10th and started listening to hollier a topic a day 4-5 days a week and read Leik one topic a day to add to what I learned in holliers review. I also did One exam edge a day x 5 scored 490-565. I did the two exams that came with hollier review as well. I also did 5 apea predictors scoring from 79-87. I also did the psi and got an 84. In summary, I did 2 live reviews ( Leik and hollier). Hollier is amazing to get the basics. Leik live is not very interesting. However HER BOOK IS THE KEY!!! I swear you could pass just reading her book alone. I read t cover to cover twice and did all her questions. Leik and apea questions were very close to exam. Psi was the closest for obvious reasons. Exam edge was not very helpful but was ok for content review. I would recommend doing 150 question “mock exams” daily so the length of the test doesn’t overwhelm you on test day. I did adult gero, there was a lot of frail elderly, women’s health and some psych. Know your first line treatments, Med safety stuff. Read all of Leik exam tips and make sure you know them well! Good luck to everyone taking the exam! Stalking allnurses for exam tips definitely helped my anxiety a lot haha

New nurse guilt
Aw i’m so sorry to hear your story. We all have stories like this. I think things like this can be very traumatic. I had a similar situation happen to me, I work in ICU and had a post op patient who was really just supposed to be there so she could have a private room after a bowel surgery. She and I laughed, joked all morning. I put her on the bedpan, came back a few mins later and she was slurring her speech. We called a code stroke, etc. long story short she started crashing fast, we intubated her, started drips, etc but she ended up dying later that day. Apparently her bowel perforated and she went super septic and that caused her to crash. I was so traumatized every time I got a post op patient after that. It still bothers me to think about that lady. I say this to say there’s nothing you did to cause him to have a PE. but I can identify with how losing a patient can really stick with you and make you question yourself. I think talking to other nurse friends helps, my coworkers all shared their stories of patients they lost that stuck with them and it helped me feel better. I personally think as nurses we should go to therapy because we see so much. Hope you feel better ❤️

Giving Birth in NP School vs Right After Graduation
No problem! its so hard women have to decide between work/school and babies. We can have both! ? some of my professors joked that my baby was an honorary graduate lol they were so happy to see him at the pinning and graduation ceremonies after watching me waddle around and show up to class looking a hot mess after no sleep and caring for him all day haha! it honestly made my NP school experience much more special and anytime I thought of giving up I thought of him. honestly, having a baby during school made me more motivated to finish lol

Giving Birth in NP School vs Right After Graduation
Hey I actually had my baby right in the middle of a semester. Found out I was pregnant just a month before starting my NP program. I spent half of my program pregnant and the other half with a new baby! I went to class the day i went into labor to drop off my recorder, gave birth two day later and was back in time for the next scheduled class sitting on an inflatable donut lol. it was difficult but with lots of support it certainly can be done. My mom came every week to stay with my son while I went to class and my mother in law stayed with us for a while to watch him while I completed my hours. once he turned a year I put him in daycare so I could study/ complete hours. My advice to you is to find a preceptor who will be flexible with your hours. My preceptor was wonderful, let me use his office to pump when I needed to, I even had a few times when I had no childcare and he let me bring my son and we discussed our cases that day instead of seeing patients with my baby on my hip lol It will be hard coming off of a break in the summer because you may not want to leave your baby, but remember we put ourselves through all of this rigorous education so we can give our babies a good life ? Good luck to you! whichever decision you make, you will be successful. We women are strong creatures! ?
