  1. Staffing by acuity

I would like to know what are some of the criteria that some of your facilities use when staffing according to patient acuity. Our nurse manager came up with her own accuity scale and it doesn't seem to make much sense to any of us. She seems to ge...

  3. Scared of Hep B vaccine

I know how you feel. I have a terrible phobia about being on the receiving end of a needle. But I did take the 3 shot series and had no problems. I would rather experience a little soreness after the shots than contract Hep B.
  4. Raise?

I have gotten a total of 8.5% this year. In May, at the time of my eval, I got a paltry 3.5%. then the pay scales were revised and I got an additional 5%. I work in a non-union facility. No bonus!
  5. I'm with OBNURSEHEATHER, I perfer to take my chances. I have never had a flu shot and can't remember the last time I was sick. Could it be that having sick people coughing in your face on a daily basis help one build up a natural immunity! HMMM!
  6. Hepatitis B Vaccine

I overcame my phobia of being on the receiving end of a needle and am glad I did. My phobia of contracting HepB was greater. I had no adverse reactions from the shots.
  7. Freaky female anatomy

Lidocaine gel can be instilled into the urethra of males to make catheterization less uncomfortable. I do it tall the time and the patients are very appreciative.
  8. I also work in a small rural hospital. We admit R/O MI patients to our Med/Surg floor on telemetry if they are pain free and their first set of cardiac enzymes are normal as well as their EKG. If their status changes, they start to have pain or ...

  10. Hospital "Error" Cited in Man's Death

Did I miss something here? If the man had been stabbed and was bleeding and requiring transfusion, why the heparin in the first place? I guess that would have been my first question, instead of how much heparin to give. Can someone enlighten me. ...

In Iowa we renew every 3 years. The renewal fee is $81.00 for RN. For renewal, we have to had 36 hours of continuing education. The continuing ed requirements were recently reduced from 45 hours.
  12. How did nursing ever "buy into" 12-hr shifts???

I've been working 7A-7P for a long time now. I like them because of the extra days off and I get to work every third weekend instead of every other weekend. I am over 40 but still feel that I can keep up the pace. I only have to do 3 in a row ever...
  13. 12 Hour Shifts

I just got off of 3 12 hour shifts in a row and have been totally exhausted all day. I got a call to see if I would work some extra today and said no, I was too exhaused and I'll be darned if I didn't get called later with the same request. I coul...
  14. I work in a rural hospital, 24 bed Med/surg and 4 bed ICU. ER docs will respond to code blue in these areas. All of our primary docs and internists (except one) live in close proximity to the hospital. When we need intubation it is either the CRN...
  15. Blood donation

We have started having a blood drive at my hospital about twice a year. I gave a donation today and I feel great. I don't know if it's the temporary loss of hgb to carry O2 to my brain, or if it's the feeling of knowing it will help someone who rea...

  20. Employee Satisfaction Surveys

We recently had one of these "employee satisfaction" surveys. We recently got the overall results. Only slightly more that half of the total number of employees participated, but supposedly it was enough to make "general assumptions" about the over...
  21. I had to have an MMR for nursing school because my rubella titer turned up negative. I got some swollen glands in my neck, but that is all. They lasted a few days. I didn't feel sick or anything.
  22. I just got done having my yearly eval. and am getting a 3.5% pay increase. The whole system is rigged against the employee. As someone previously stated, you would have to walk on water to get any more. I don't even know why they bother because yo...
