  1. Hi Falon. I'm not a Medical Transcriptionist, but am also interested in taking a course. I found that Gatlin Education offers online courses through local colleges and universities via the web. For instance, the online course offered through my local university would cost $1,395 ... alot less that the price you've been quoted! Check out Gatlin at http://www.gatlineducation.com/ And if there is anything out there with transcription information, please post. I would love to hear more about this profession.
  2. It's been a while since I attended Miami Dade, but at the time I was a student there, they would exempt you from taking the CPT if you had a recent SAT or ACT score sent to them. Have you tried this avenue?
  3. Hi there! As a former Orlando Tech student, I can probably give you some suggestions. First and foremost, do not buy any books. Orlando Tech changes textbooks frequently. You will receive a list of textbooks during orientation. Seriously, do not buy ahead of schedule. Many students in my class loss cash by buying the wrong books. This program will require flexibility and patience. Trust me! I've sent you a PM, btw.
  4. I'm actually a RN student in Florida. As soon as I graduate, I intend to move to south central CO. This is why I asked. The CO boards seems pretty dead, but hopefully others will relate their experience. The trend however is not unique to CO. Even in Florida, professionals in rural area (nurses or otherwise) tend to be overworked and underpaid.
  5. Sorry to hear about your situation. Out of curiosity, what part of CO are you in? Thanks! :)
  6. I'm have PCOS as well. You can find great information and support from the following websites: http://www.pcosupport.org/ http://www.soulcysters.net/
  7. Although I am still a student, I have been looking through the job postings in various sites/newspapers in Colorado. It seems to me that a majority of the ads state "Must be a gradute of an accredited program". I am currently enrolled in a RN program in Florida that is not accredited by either CCNE or NLNAC. (Once in CO, I hope to transfer to an accredited program for my BSN.) In the meantime, am I going to have a horrible time finding a job? Would any graduates of non-accredited programs share their experiences with me? Thanks!
  8. Wow... great suggestion (UCHSC)! I just checked out the program information online and it's definitely promising. The out of state tuition however is not. :uhoh21: Thanks for your help!
  9. I'll be relocating to Colorado in the next year with a ASN degree. I've been doing some job research and noticed that most positions require or prefer a BSN degree. Since I will only have my ASN, will I have any trouble finding a job? I am looking at the Southern Colorado area, but willing to move elsewhere if need be. In addition, I would like to pursue my BSN as soon as I move. What are the programs/waitlists like? Thanks for your help!
  10. I sent the school an inquiry message and received this response: Although the LPN-BSN Distance Learning Program is not recognized in Florida, a number of other states have been recognized or approved and we are working diligently to complete the other states. We are hoping the Florida State Board of Nursing will recognize this program soon. In the meantime, here is a little more information about the University and the College of Nursing. Indiana State University has an exclusive contract with The College Network so as to provide the study guides for the initial phase of the program. As you will see in the attached, there are three Phases to the LPN-BSN Track. Phase I are Gen Ed requirements that will need to be completed with The College Network or a local college in your area. When acquiring Gen Ed requirements, 50 credit hours need to be at a 300 or 400 level course. If you have a previous degree, some or all of the credits may transfer into the College of Nursing. After completing Phase I you then apply to Indiana State University. http://www.indstate.edu/join_us/apply.htm You will then fill out a 2nd application with the College of Nursing: http://www.indstate.edu/site/nurs/pdfs/con-admission-application-9-15-05.doc For Transfer Students, this link on the ISU website is very helpful and Steps 1 thru 13 will guide you through information you need to know as a Distance Education student: http://www.indstate.edu/distance/getstarted.html Costs for the distance program are: http://www.indstate.edu/distance/fees.html Enrollment requirements include: (due by Nov 1st for Spring Semester) (due by June 1st for Fall Semester) Ø Come in with 2.5 minimal GPA. Maintain a 2.25 GPA throughout your courses. Ø Criminal background check. (IN residents: https://secure.in.gov/apps/isp/lch/ Thru your states local State Police website. Send copy. Ø Must be licensed as a LPN. Send copy of license with line marked thru. Ø ISU Health History Form completed then fax: http://www.indstate.edu/shc/Health_Record.pdf Ø Proof of Immunizations (MMR, TB, Hep B, Tet & Dip) Ø CPR certification card. (Copy Front & Back with signature) Send copy. Ø Legal Limitations Form completed then fax: http://www.indstate.edu/site/nurs/pdfs/eligibility_for_application_for_registered-nurse-licensure-legal-limitations.pdf Ø LPNs will take the TEAS exam & achieve the cut score. You will receive your packet after registering for your first nursing course (N208) through the ISU Virtual Bookstore These entrance copies will be kept in your file at the College of Nursing/Student Affairs Office, 749 Chestnut St., Rm 328, Terre Haute, IN 47809. All nursing courses are completed online. Even though the courses are online and self-paced, they are within the traditional Fall and Spring semesters and taught by on-campus faculty members. Then clinicals will be done in the state where you reside, with a preceptor at a local facility. This link is the FAQ (frequently asked questions) for the delivery of clinical education for the LPN-BS Distance Education Track: http://www.indstate.edu/site/nurs/pdfs/faq-lpn-bs-clinical.pdf Hope this will help you in your decision. Thank you for your interest in Indiana State University and the College of Nursing. .
  11. I'm not sure about Tampa, but the Florida Board of Nursing website has a list of accredited programs (ADN and PN). Check out: http://www.doh.state.fl.us/mqa/nursing/lst_trainingprograms.pdf You can also see the passing rates for the schools (2003 and 2004) at: http://www.doh.state.fl.us/mqa/nursing/lst_trainingprograms.pdf
  12. I could not find anything with audio, but these websites might help: http://cel.colgate.edu/howto/powerpoint/pc/ http://www.towson.edu/users/tasulliv/istc501/powerpoint1.html http://www.acsu.buffalo.edu/~kaysack/powerpoint/ http://www.cyberbee.com/powerpoint.html http://www.zdnetindia.com/help/specials/powerpoint/stories/16463.html Good luck on your project!
  13. I am currently a LPN student. I recently discovered that a local community college is offering online courses through Allegra Learning Solutions (accredited by American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation). Course overviews can be found here: http://www.allegralearning.com/overview.html#GER The overviews specifically mention that certain programs are targeted towards nurses of all levels (including student and LPNs). This is where it gets tricky..... I may be able to complete the certificate program, but won't be allowed to sit for the national certification until I am an RN and meet ANCC's requirements. How valuable would it be to complete the certificate program without being able to obtain certification? How would a potential employer view this? Any assistance/clarification would be appreciated! Thanks! :)
  14. From the SEIU website (http://www.seiu.org/health/issues/southflorida_spot.cfm): In January 12th, more than 500 nurses, service, and technical workers in Miami voted to join SEIU, making North Shore Medical Center the region's sixth hospital where employees have come together for a true voice in the delivery of patient care. The North Shore workers joined the rapidly growing SEIU Florida Health Care Union--which also represents hospital employees at Pan American Hospital, Cedars Medical Center, and Parkway Hospital in Miami, as well as St. Mary's Hospital in West Palm Beach.
  15. While I agree with all the above posters, I must say this.... I love multicollinarity's blunt honesty. :) Sugar coating may make things easier to swallow/hear, but it may not help someone understand your message.
  16. I'm taking pre-reqs on both campuses, depending on the semester/availability. I prefer east only because it is closer to home.... but any campus will do. Have to get these classes completed..... sigh. :stone
  17. I'm in day #3 of the LPN program. Thus far, it's ok... a little disorganized. Lots of whining by the other students (how many tests, how many questions) and lots of repetition. Core is mostly self-taught/independent studies. So how is everyone else fairing? Is LPN school everything you thought it would be? Me, I'm a little disappointed at the pace. Hopefully it will get a little more exciting. And if all else fails..... I can survive anything for 18 months (I hope). Looking forward to hearing from other new LPN students!
  18. Mods, I posted this message in the wrong forum. Would someone please move this to Nursing Student Assistance? Thanks!
  19. Hello everyone! I've been asked to conduct an interview with nurse, so naturally I thought of all of you. Would anyone be able to assist me with this assignment, please? The interview questions are as follows: Department Educational Background Years of Experience # of years with your healthcare facility Description of job tasks How does your job relate to the other health team members? Do you plan on continuing your education? If so, in this area or another related field? Why did you choose nursing? Has nursing changed in the last few years? If so, how? What, if any, difficulties do you have working with other health team members? Do you feel that team members could work more effectively with each other? If so, how? How do you feel about the new trends in healthcare? What changes has your facility made that have changed the type/quality of care given?Sorry for the lengthy interview questions! I would greatly appreciate any assistance with this! Thanks! :thankya:
  20. Depending where you live in Kendall (I lived off 88th and 123 Ct, just west of the turnpike entrance) it will be a least a 25 mile drive. Traffic just sucks everywhere. I would estimate at least a 45+ minute drive each way. I've since moved to Orlando, but I was working for an insurance company in Doral (only 12 miles away). It still took me 45 minutes to get there. I am by no means a slowpoke...trust me! :rotfl: So keep the commute in mind when considering your move.
  21. Light,Love,Truth: Palm Beach county is on the east coast north of Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. The Treasure Coast is also on the east. It a little further north of Palm Beach and stretches from Stuart through Sebastian, including coastal Indian River county, St. Lucie County and Martin county. Okeechobee county is also sometimes considered part of the Treasure Coast, although nowhere near the coast/water.
  22. Check out Salary.com. According to this website, the median CNA salary in Boca is $23,732. I would not limit myself to the Boca area. You will be right on the Palm Beach/Broward county border, so you can easily work either county... maybe even north Miami-Dade (although it will be a long commute). The median salary in Ft. Lauderdale is $23,952. In Miami it is $23,558.
  23. Samantha, How about Palm Beach Community College? http://www.pbcc.edu/programs/programsheet.asp?id=9
