Student Body Odor
I wish my admin team would see it that way. Everything weird or that no one else wants to deal with becomes a nurse problem... ARG

Student Body Odor
It was her teachers who brought it up to me and asked me to speak to her. I don't know her at all and feeling a bit awkward about it.

Ugh- helicopter/tiger mom!
I have found that with more than one diabetic student, the students love knowing there is another (or are others) at their school with the same condition. They usually become fast friends and create bond no matter the age difference. I had a 1st and 8th grader that called each other brother and sister they became so tight. That is odd the mom is so concerned about the other diabetic being around.

Student Body Odor
Any thoughts or suggestions about how to sensitively address body odor with a 5th grade student (in this case a girl)?

Bed Bug Panic - Help
I totally agree about the letter, especially with the bug not being professionally identified. It was not my call, admin wanted it done. I made them send it from them, not myself. If I get calls I will refer them to admin. They indicated in the letter that they would be having the classes, and the entire school for that matter, professionally treated immediately. Came in this morning to find out that will not be until next week sometime. I already have upset staff coming to me, I imagine the parent calls are next. Once again, thank you all!!!

Bed Bug Panic - Help
I did check the student for bites - back, chest, arms, legs (he had on shorts), face, neck, etc. He has no complaint of itchiness. They maintenance person threw the bug away in the container it was scooped up in, I never did see. I did talk to mom and she appreciative of the call and will go ahead and give his backpack and clothes a good washing once he gets home. I did convince them no send the student home as we can not say for certain where it even came from and he has no bite marks. They are having the building sprayed after school and have relocated the class to elsewhere on campus. I found a letter online that the admin is tweaking for our school to send home with just those in the same grade level as the student. Thank you for your support. I don't post much, but read a lot!! I love this site... I do not feel so alone.

Bed Bug Panic - Help
Have a student the another student found a bug crawling on him. Teacher, secretary and 2 maintenance guys decided it is a bed bug. The student is brought to me to check him over... how do I check for bed bugs??? Lice... I know lice, but I've never seen a bed bug in my life and since they don't live on people how am I supposed to check him. They also want me to call the parent who is likely going to have several questions. They want me to send him home, just because the bug was on him does not mean it came from his home. I don't feel it is my place to make this call, especially when it has not been professionally verified. Now I have teachers coming to me asking me what to do and telling me they refuse to go back into the classrooms in which the student was in. The administration is asking me if I feel I need to send a notice out to the entire school or what... This is not a medical issue and don't do pest control nor have I studied bugs. Anyone else ever had to deal with this??? Please help!!!!

Lock Down Diabectic Action Plan
I am PS-8th, but my one TD1 is in second grade. We used to let the junior high kids carry their meter and its supplies along with snacks/juice. They sit carry the snack/juice, but we had an 8th grader at one of the other schools who was checking all of her friends BG using the same lancet... that ruined it for all of the older TD1's district wide.

Lock Down Diabectic Action Plan
The district provided lock down kits have flash lights, toilet paper and a curtain for privacy and the bucket is used if someone need to potty. They had water, hand sanitizer, and book so the kids can read quietly. There is some other stuff, but I don't recall what it is. My TD1 ER baggy has juice, beef jerky snacks and water along with high and low symptom (esp specific to him - he's great at knowing thank goodness) and instructions about what to do if student complains of demonstrates symptoms.

Lock Down Diabectic Action Plan
Yes,, I am definitely focusing on the potential for a drop in BG, as we've all agreed we would rather have him high for a while then to go low. Thank you all for your thoughts. He does already have snacks and juices pretty much everywhere. Our district has special Lock Down kits in every class, library, café, office, etc. These ER bagg will go in the kit so that no one has to look around for these item, anyone in that area would be able to find it when they opened the kit. The district provided lock down kits are not to be disturbed except in the event of a lock down, so that all items with be there if needed.

Lock Down Diabectic Action Plan
Does anyone have something in place for their Diabetic student(s) during a lock down. I am working on putting something into place for TD1 kiddo. I have already spoke to his parents and my administration and everyone agrees this is an area that needs to be addressed. I had mom provide zipplock bags with juice (for a quick carb), a low carb snack that would not require correction and a bottle of water. I will be distributing these to his teacher and all of his special area teacher. They already have information about his diabetes, symptoms and what to do in a normal situation. I want to give them instructions for the ER bag in the event of a lock down and they will be instructed to call 911 in the event of a potential diabetic ER and give them specific information about the student, the lock down and their exact location on the campus. I am in the process of typing something up, but thought I would get input and see if any of you already something in place. I don't want to miss anything and have all bases covered. Once I get things in order at my campus, I will then be sharing it with the rest of the district.
