Rejected by Patient
I was fired by 2 patients and i had no idea why until i was called in the managers office . Basically i wasn’t perky enough which came off as not caring & nurturing. Also trying to let your patients sleep through the night can backfire ( then it is you were not in the room all night ). I’m going to work on being more perky.

Everyone is white?
The hospital i currently work at are now hiring more AA in specialty areas. My unit had a total of two AA. Since merging with another hospital they have five AA. It’s no big deal to be the only non white person . But, it is a big deal to work with people who don’t display teamwork or talk about you if you make a mistake instead of helping .

Is it possible to stay in med surg too long before going OB?
I tried to transfer from med surg to postpartum within the same hospital and my transfer was rejected. After i made a year i quit plus i found out i was pregnant. Now im currently looking for jobs outside of med surg. Hopefully you currently have an understanding manager that will not block your growth. Best wishes to you and your future endeavors. ?

How was your Nurse Residency Experience
my nursing residency came as a surprise. it was not mentioned on the application or during the interview. two months into my job is when i received an email. i did not want to do it because i was not willing to commit to more than one year of med-surg and move on. i had no choice, it was mandatory. it was the very first group ever within the hospital system. there was no hands on learning just a bunch of lectures.....pointless to say the least.

Who Did NOT Do a Year of Med Surg?
I did a year of med surg because i could not find a women's health job. i knew med surg would not be my thing, but it was good experience. I took time off to start my family and now im looking for a women's health job. I won' t settle for med surg this time around. Go straight into the specialty you want if you can.

new grad nurse update
hello all last year i posted how i was starting on a med surg unit as a new grad. it is now 11 months later and i took everyone's advice to stick it out. my year will be up in august and my new grad residency program will be over in September ( which i did not want to do & was not mentioned in my interview lol). Anyway this year was full of trials and tribulations, but nonetheless it was great experience. In april my med surg unit closed so i attempted to transfer to a women's health unit within the hospital. It took 2 months for the women's health manager to tell me no. As some of you have said before its possible for an internal transfer to be blocked ( which is what most likely happened ). I was trying to stay positive and hopeful. the unit that I'm on now is ok but the nurses are very territorial and many are not friendly. i notice that i get the first admit all the time depending on what seasoned nursing i work with. I notice that i will get two or more busy patients while everybody else is sitting down watching tv shows on their phones lol. All days are not bad and all days are not good. Im also pregnant Yippie!!! I still make sure i do my job and get things done. Sometimes i find myself doing to much because people don"t want to help out and i get tired of waiting. At times i do get stressed out but i know that i have to stay calm and centered for the sake of my body & baby. The hospital has a huge nursing shortage going on. They over work us and give us pizza to make up for it lol. I know that it is getting closer for my time to get out of there. I said all this to say if any of you have advise on trying to stay positive and stress free, i would love the advise or any stories of your own. thank you :)

New grad on med surg unit
I started on night ma and I know that they are not easy. Some nights are ok and some nights are not. I will get to train on days as well. Both have pros and cons! I'm well aware of that !!

New grad on med surg unit
Yes I have 1 grandparent and she is the reason I want to go into OB/GYN nursing along with other things. I don't have anything against the geriatric population ! I just thought I would see different age groups. Like I said before I'm there to learn learn learn with a smile on my face !!! I will take it one day at a time. I believe it's ok not to care for med surg, but I go on that unit and do what I have to do for the time being !!

New grad on med surg unit
I'm very aware that it's possible, even though she said we want people to be where they want to be. I'm new not stupid, I know people are going to do what is best for them and I will do the same for myself ! Get my experience and move on.

New grad on med surg unit
Also, I don't believe all med surg units are a dumping ground (bad choice of words). The unit that I happen to work on is like that. My first night working the nurses were talking pretty bad about the unit and I was so shocked to hear so many grumpy negative nurses, who supposedly hate their job. They were asking me questions like, why would you come to this unit etc... I told them I'm here to gain experience! They made me feel really uncomfortable . So negative and unprofessional!
