Please, need help with pediatric assignment

Hello!

I am really lost right now. I tried researching this on the internet but cannot find anything good. I have a pediatric assignment. The scenario is: 10 month old infant (male) hospitalized with meningitis. He has an IV for abxs. The task is to chose the appropriate toy for the baby. I know that it shouldn't be anything that makes loud noises, but should be something soothing that will help the child to be calm. The only thing I could come up with is the eatable bracelets (my rationale is that baby can suck on it for comfort). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.:redbeathe

Look at a growth and development chart for an infant of this age and that should guide you. What should a typical 10 month old be doing?

I don't think an edible bracelet is a good idea either.

If you cannot find age appropriate toys doing an internet search during this time of the year, maybe you are looking in the wrong places.

What about one of those plush animals which can act as a comfort measure but also stimulates babes senses by the different types of fabric its made of and different noises etc it can make. One foot squeeks the ear makes/feels crinkley.

My daughter had one when she was 9months old in hospital for RSV and it was more of something to hang onto.

First: Determine where this child is in development. Gross motor, fine motor, speech, cognitive. The child may be behind in one but ahead in another.

Then: look for the appropriate toy based on the stage of development in that particular domain. Your peds text should provide some information about toys for each stage and domain.

Comfort toys are good for any situation, but they also must be appropriate for the child's condition and allergies, if any. If you pick a learning toy, it could be geared toward one of the domains the child is behind in.

An edible bracelet for that age is not appropriate. It's a choking hazard.

Think about what sort of toys children normally have at that age. Toys for a 10month old are more about distraction than something for the child to play with. Most children at that age enjoy a mobile for their crib.

At this age, children are particularly intrigued by books with flaps that open, textures that can be rubbed, and bunnies that need patting
