Please answer for my class research paper

I'm in an ethics class and I have to do a research paper on the pro's and con's of animal research. (12 people have to work on this - rediculous!!! :scrying: )

Anyways...

I'm going to try to create a poll, but if it doesn't work can you tell me if you are for or against animal research. And if you have a stipulation (such as for medical research but not for make-up) please note that also.

Thanks a bunch in advance for any assistance!!!!! :kiss

For the most part I find animal research cruel and not necessary. If it is the only way possible to advance medical practice that will significantly benefit humankind, then I begrudenly give my approval.

(I'm a big hippocrit, because the meat industry is the cruelest of them all and I quit being a vegetarian a couple of years ago.)

Good luck with your project - 12 people??? I hate group projects.

Thanks Tweety,

:smackingf This project is killing me...it's worse than my actual nursing class!!! Especially when some of the people refuse to do their fair share.

I second this opinion!

I am truly a dog lover and I hate to think of anything bad happening to them, but as the other poster said if it is the only thing closest to a human response. Good luck with the project. You will have them for life. Especially if you go into administration, etc. And yes, there will always be those who will not do their share. When I was in school and this happened, we went to the instructor and those who weren't pulling their weight had to do the project on their own!

I hate group projects too, and I have one due in 3 weeks and nobody has done anything yet.

As for animal experimentation, it seems to be a necessary evil, and I would have to say yes to it as long as it is done humanely, and the experiment is really necessary to gain knowledge for humans' afflictions/treatments.

I can not even kill a seedling plant to weed through, and my pets have never been hit my me, just yelled at, so you can imagine I'm really not for hurting animals. But AIDS, and many other conditions need a cure, so if animals can help, I guess it's a grudging yes, with qualifications.

Hope this helps,

'Dukes

I too think animal research is cruel. But, I eat meat and it doesn't help right?

There are a lot of different aspects of the research to consider. I do believe it's cruel if the purpose is for make-up. Testing products on animals prior to testing on humans is a necessary evil that can at times benefit animals as well as humans. Veternarians are treating animals with chemotherapy. The initial research with chemotherapy and dogs was probably done prior to clinical trials with humans participants, now it is being used to treat the animals. Also, due to information gathered during research, the poison control center was able to assist me when my dog ate my son's prescriptions.

Wow, Karis brought up some issues I hadn't previously thought of. However I am against animal testing. There seem to be plenty of make-up mfrs that seem to be able to manage without animal testing - why can't everyone else?

As for medical research, again, how close are human reactions to the animal reactions considering the difference in our systems. Not to mention that I notice in most animal research, when you read the study, they do not give the animals what would be a "normal" exposure to these things. It is unusually high compared to what would be given to a human. (the mg/kg is way off). So I would have to say no.

I have pets at home, and all came from the Humane Society. I recommend a grateful mutt from the pound any day.

I think animal research is completely ok, as long as the researchers follow the ethical treatment guidelines (which implies that the research has a goal of advancing human welfare). As a biology major, I can tell you a LOT went in to ensuring the animals were treated according to national guidelines. You have to have a church official, professors, a community member at large, etc. all approve EVERY aspect of the research. I am an avid animal lover, but if one animal life can save millions of humans from suffering or dying, I feel that it's worth it.

I hate animal research, but I would vote for it for medical issues. As long as it is done per the regulations which are really as kind as they can be. I work at a big university and the regulation of the animal research is incredible. I believe it is a necessary evil. If I saw anything that I felt was not correct I would report it in an instant. When I see those animal cages I just want to cry, but what if this research leads to something that would save someone I love? It is a horrid decision and I hate it ( I have 2 beloved dog's of my own).

For any other purpose - NO WAY!

I've actually worked in animal research before I went back to school to be an RN. I couldn't do it. I worked in a lab that experimented on periodontal disease. They used rats, monkeys, and beagles (thank God I didn't have to contact the beagles.) I was wondering if it was actually meaningful research, and one of the scientists gave me a briefing on the hell that diabetics go through. I can't say I was ethically opposed to it... but I couldn't actually do it. Hypocritical? Well, maybe, but I think not. I don't think most people are opposed to, say, AIDS vaccine research on primates, yet it takes a very strong and yet a very caring person to actually work with these animals.

Testing for makeup? Hell no. Testing for medical reasons? Put my dad in that hospital bed (as he has been), and of course. If it's done ethically and is approved by the IRB, which most animal medical research is.

My cousin is in vet school and they have a pod of beagles they use for medical testing. (Why always beagles?) The dogs all live together in a big fenced-off field in nice weather, and they ALWAYS are getting love from the vet students. I liked seeing it. :)

And yes, I am a vegetarian. :)
