How much does a RN in SC make?
I'm not sure about the other states, but Charlotte, NC has a high cost of living, as does Charleston, SC. I'm not sure how they compare to one another. If you take into account the cost of living, Greenville is generally the highest paying. The pay is a little lower in Charleston and doesn't go as far.

Greenville/Spartanburg
I am an upstate native and I LOVE Greenville. You should definitely venture downtown. They have tons of activities, especially during the summer. Of all the places there, you should go to the Reedy River Falls Park. Here's a website that mainly caters to downtown. www.greatergreenville.com You can look up free events (and others), activities for children, restaurants, etc. The restaurant list doesn't live half of the ones in Greenville, but it's a good place to start. I'm still a student, so I don't know much about the jobs in Greenville because my school is in Greenwood. Greenville Hospital System is always making headlines. I believe they're seaking magnet status at the moment and their pay is outstanding, but no bonuses. They have partnered with area schools and medical universities to make the hospital a "university medical center" and they're adding all kinds of programs for students. You can look into this at www.ghs.org under News-Health Sciences SC. The starting pay for jobs is also listed on their website. If you have any questions, let me know. Good luck!

Roper Saint Francis
I'm halfway through my BSN program and need major financial assistance. I'm only eligible for private loans at this point. I recently received information about a nursing scholarship program through Roper Saint Francis, in the Charleston area. It's a lot of money, but you're required to work for them for a specified amount of time for each semester of funding. So, my question... Does anyone work in their system? I'm curious as to their reputation and job satisfaction among nurses. Even if you haven't worked there, I'd love to hear what the general feeling is towards them. I had never heard of them until now, but I live in the upstate. Has anyone taken this oppurtunity or know someone who has?

NAVY or RAF nursing?
I've seen this said a lot, so I'd thought I'd share what I learned. Today there was a Navy recruiter at our school. He told us that nursing is LAND based in the Navy. The only medical personnel on ships are PAs and maybe a physician, but never nurses. If the sailors need care, they're flown to a land-based hospital.

Update
My first day was great, as was today. My professors are really nice; I will meet the last one tomorrow. The course load doesn't seem bad at all. We just went over the basic intro stuff, so the only hectic part was financial aid, registration, parking, etc. I got my stethoscope and bp cuff today. How funny is it that that purchase made my day? Thanks for all the support!

Update
A few months ago I posted a thread titled "Exasperated..5th rejection?!." Well, I took some more classes while applying to two more schools. I had resigned myself to working full-time through August and getting an assoicates when I really wanted a bachelors degree (so I can get a masters easier in the future). One of the schools that denied me admission referred me to a school that just happened to have open seats past the deadline date. I had given up hope of hearing from them, because, well, classes start tomorrow. BUT...the dean of nursing called me Saturday evening to offer me a spot in the nursing program that starts tomorrow. TOMORROW!! No time to really be prepared and experience the anticipation and excitement. But I'm still SO excited. I just wanted to share my update with everyone and wish them luck!

Winter Classes- what is everyone taking???
We called the fall/winter/spring system trimesters, they're not really quarters or semesters, b/c summer wasn't included in the normal school year. Either way, we referred to them as semesters, b/c it was easier.

Please help me understand/Domestic Violence Question
You should try looking up "battered wife syndrome". It's actually a bonafide syndrome, and sometimes a self defense in trials where a wife kills her abusive spouse (though it should be renamed to be PC for those who aren't wives, but, hey, I didn't name it), not that I'm recommending it. I've been intently reading this thread, and was suprised it wasn't mentioned before. My father never once hit me or my mother, but he always a step away from it. The threat was there, but he never acted on it, though he was emotionally and verbally abusive. I'm so thankful to the ones who've shared their stories, it's kind of scary how similar my dad sounds to these other men. I did want to rant for just a minute, though. My state is consistently ranked among the highest for men who kill their female partners. But in my southern, old-fashioned state, most people still believe that it's a private matter not to be discussed with others, none of their business, they don't get involved. Sure restraining orders are amost always noted in these cases, but the police don't particularly enforce them, if they decide to give the person one. Also, I was taught in a self defense course through my college sorority, that in our area, and many others, if you do call for help from the police in a domestic violence case, that you shouldn't say it's DV. The cops are slower to respond and less likely to be helpful. Now, I'm not sure where they got their statistics, but it SEEMS to be true. I also am not saying that all law enforcement are liek this, but it generally happens in my area. In addition, we were told to say there was a robbery or something similar to get a quicker response time. I'm not sure if that qualifies, but if could fall under filling a false report. Has anyone else ever heard of this or know anything about it? P.S. I'm not trying to offend anyone, just trying to inform and get feedback.

Fertililty & cycle questions galore
I've done a lot of reading about this. Though it's too much to write here, if you can, go to the library and see if they have Understanding Human Sexuality 8th ed by Hyde and DeLamater. Or, you can check out a bookstore and just take notes from the pages about conception. There are a lot of methods, some of which require studying your cycle and some mathematics. They also have in there how to figure out your cycle length if it's not the normal 28 day cycle. Good luck!

Winter Classes- what is everyone taking???
My undergrad school have fall/winter/spring. Winter term was horrid. Two months, barely, of classes that met an hour and 15 minutes every day. But we only took two classes (8 hours). It was infamous for being hard, b/c even though shorter, the same volume of material as the wing terms was taught. Actually, after decades of complaints, they're doing away with it in the next few years. I'm kinda sad, even though it was dreadful, b/c it made my school unique. A&P II would have been unbearable in the winter term. I hope you have a better experience, good luck!

Why can't I shadow a nurse...
If you're a student and could possibly take a class that allows you to do an independent study/internship, the hospital will more than likely work with you. I'd call the hospital directly. Either way you would have to sign a confidentiality agreement. Volunteers have to do this as well.

Please answer for my class research paper
I think animal research is completely ok, as long as the researchers follow the ethical treatment guidelines (which implies that the research has a goal of advancing human welfare). As a biology major, I can tell you a LOT went in to ensuring the animals were treated according to national guidelines. You have to have a church official, professors, a community member at large, etc. all approve EVERY aspect of the research. I am an avid animal lover, but if one animal life can save millions of humans from suffering or dying, I feel that it's worth it.

Do Doctors Really Care?
I've had problems like that, too. If you feel there's something more wrong, ALWAYS get a second opinion. I chipped the lower part of my femur and the bone was floating around my patella. VERY painful. My faimly doc said it was just swelling, and in a few weeks, if it hadn't gone done, he'd drain it. A week later I went to a specialist. I scheduled surgery for the next month. I'd much rather go to a specilaist than a general physician unless it's a cold or something. I know they're accomplished, too, but generally speaking.
