Phone Interview for NICU!

I'm super excited guys! I'm around 6 months into med surg and applied to the NICU....I'm supposed to receive a call soon for a phone interview to be set up!

Like alot of you here I wanted this quite badly and I'm praying I might get in ... I've always felt that I've done great at in person interviews ...I've done a phone interview twice before but I must admit they're definitely not my favorite and more awkward. .. I really want to sell what experience I have over the phone and I'm hoping the passion and desire for the job shows in my voice too..

Any body ever done a phone interview for NICU? any tips on how to stand out to make it to an in person interview?

I feel like if I can make it to a face to face one I'll really nail it! Just need to get there!

Why is the interview by phone? I assume it's far away??.....pls offer more details

No its actually a hospital right up the street from me. For whatever reason, this facility's hiring process consists of either a phone or video interview first, then a face to face one. I don't know why...that's just the system there.

I've had these - it's often the Human Resource Dept's "weeding out" process. In my experience, it's often a lot of generic questions from a nursing recruiter that could apply to any job. Strengths/Weaknesses, what can you offer this hospital, why NICU....that sort of thing. It's the first step in getting a "real" interview. Good luck!

I had a phone interview first as well but it wasn't NICU specific it was HR then advanced to NICU manager. Do you know if yours is this way as well? I would just be prepared with notes of common questions so you aren't put on the spot.

I agree with the precious posts. Most hospitals have you interview with the nurse recruiter/HR person through the phone before they set up an in person interview with the nurse manager and nurse educator. They would ask generic questions, situational questions (ex. tell me a time you've made a mistake, how you settle conflicts with coworkers, name a time you had a difficult patient and how you dealt with it, etc.) and they'll ask you about your clinicals and where you would see yourself within 5 years.

Yes, Ilsaj - it's thru HR then you go thru the hiring manager if selected. I did the phone interview...it'll be a few days until phone interviews are done by HR then the hiring manager will select who he/she wants to further interview (I'm assuming in person this time) and they'll call. I did prepare a list of questions and answers! I feel like I did overall well - I did prepare well. Even though some of the questions were on my list and others weren't - it at least triggered my brain to think by having the other questions and answers written down. Any phone interview I've ever done has felt weird - I really do prefer in person - but I've always done pretty decent, I think - and I really feel like I nail in person interviews, even though I'm super nervous at first! And I guess we always question ourselves a little bit but I guess I have to remember no one knows I'm shaking on the inside but me! I really don't let that show best I can! I really hope I get a call for in person! I'm praying about it! I know there may be people more experienced than me but not necessarily, for all I know, I could have a leg up on someone else....and there are a few positions open instead of just one so that's good!

Ok I'm rambling I'm just excited and nervous!

What do you guys recommend for following up? Phone interviews will be completed 2 days from now ...do you wait to send a "thank you" 2 days from now? Do it now, the sooner the better? Or wait til tomorrow?

Good luck to you, I have a NEW-Grad Nicu phone interview on Thursday and then if I make it past that I will get a face to face or Skype interview since its in another state. :-)

I would maybe send a thank you card to the person who did the phone interview, just to remind them that you exist and to reiterate why you feel you would be a good candidate for the position.

Well no news yet .... I don't know if maybe contacting prospective employees is just a drawn out process because they're hiring because nurses are retiring? (I was told by HR that is why they're hiring ...a couple nurses are retiring) I mean I guess that makes hiring less urgent than if a few nurses just gave a 2 week notice and they're scrambling to fill positions. For all i know these nurses arent retiring for another few months so theyre just not in a rush to fill positions? Trying not to think abt it but it kinda makes me sad not to hear back ... I have heard of people not hearing back til long after they forgot about the position and moved on ...

Not to burst your bubble, but if you haven't heard from them in a week (two at the very most) for an in-person interview, then they have chosen other candidates for the live interview.

Mine was in quick succession. Phone interview with HR, week later-unit manager phone interview and scheduled for live interview a week later, 4 days after live interview- job offer.
