Penn Valley

Hello my name is Kelly and I am currently going to Penn Valley I hope to apply for the nursing program in Jan. I heard there could be a waiting list. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi-I am graduating from PV in December. They changed admission so now there isnt a waiting list. You get "points" for everything and they take all the applicants for one semester and admit people on how many points they have. If you dont make it, you reapply. Points are earned for things like GPA, healthcare experience, pre-reqs done, etc.

Good luck. I'm not going to sugarcoat things and tell you the program is easy, but it is doable and you will end up with a good education. It is just hard (and sometimes pretty unorganized). PV has a NCLEX pass rate of 90% right now (highest in MO). So they are doing something right. I already have a job waiting for me in Jan and PV nursing grads are in pretty high demand with all the hospitals. We have a good reputation. (For example, hospitals like Research, Truman and NKC are holding positions open specifically for Penn Valley nurses.)

If you don't mind me asking, why Penn Valley as opposed to other nursing programs in Kansas City area. I am weighing my options, Penn Valley or St. Lukes, UMKC, Graceland etc.

Penn Valley was just my first choice. It was cheaper then other programs and I will finish faster and be able to get into the work force with my ADN and then later if I choice to go back for a BSN I can. Which I will probably do after I get some experience under my belt. Hope that helps!!

I see a lot of other schools above 90% pass rate... based on the chart on the BON site. Am I reading it wrong? Also, I am now a senior at PV in the ADN program. If anyone has any questions... I will do my best to answer them objectively, but just know: I just finished finals and a tough semester and am feeling a little resentment, a lot, actually, towards certain aspects of the program. I will do my best to be nice though. :innerconf

I am trying to decide on which route to go ADN vs. BSN, if I go for the ADN I would probably be going to Penn Valley so any thoughts or opinions you have on Penn Valey would be appreciated!

They fail some of the most undeserving people w/o giving adequate reasons. Obviously, most deserve the punishments, but, for those that absolutely do not, it makes me ashamed of my school. I have had some awesome teachers, but many are not nurturing, understanding, compromising, or willing to listen. There are so many different clinical instructors though... all expecting different things than others, it's just tough. The work is gonna be hard anywhere, but there are some major staffing difficulties at PV. I hate to make this blanket statement because, like I said, some of my instructors have actually been some of the most amazing people I have ever met in my life.

Ya know, I would have to agree with a lot of what Lori is saying. I feel like I got a good education at PV but had to put up with A LOT!!! It was the hardest thing I have ever done. Man....

But I just graduated--I am nurse! YIPPEE!

PS I think the pass rate was highest last year and now it is down a bit. It is still around 90%.

I to have been looking into different nursing programs. I keep coming back to PV(because of the $), although everytime I call with questions they make me feel like they don't have time to answer them. Is this program doable working full-time. I want to start asap but according to them by the time I take my basic courses I will have to wait until 2011 to start part time adn program. Then she acted like the program is so difficult to get into. Please help!!!

I have heard that the night program is hard to get into and they only accept apps every two years for that program. My philosphy is to go ahead and take your gen eds and if it takes you to long to finish them just go for your 2 yr degree and then apply for a BSN school. I know it will take you longer but there are way more options for BSN programs then ADN programs. I just finish all my gen eds and I am about to apply for the day program in January, I have a 3 year old so I will have to find some daycare for her. I just figure I will take whatever program I can get into. Good Luck!!!

It IS doable working full time but very, very stressful. As long as you are organized and realize you will have absolutely NO TIME for anything else in your life, you can do it! Seriously, if tehre is any way you can go and work part time or not at all, I would advise it. PV's program is very stressful!
