Ive been looking into excelsior college lpn to rn...my plan is to start the program in February and hope to be done by December. My biggest question is, how have most of you pay for that? Since the RN is all test, their website state financial aid is not available. Previously, I used stafford loans for my schooling... Did most of you take out a private loan to go to excelsior or just paid for it out of pocket as you go? Any advice would be helpful!!! I don't even have an LPn job right now! With all the bills I have plus student loan knocking on my door already, I don't really have the extra out of pocket money for excelsior college but would like to get my RN ASAP! Is 10 months a reasonable goal?

10 months is not a reasonable goal if you have to do all the Nursing courses plus the pre-req's. But I do see in your message that you do have some college courses done since you have Stafford Loans. Have you checked with Excelsior to see what courses you have already done will be accepted and what courses you still need of the pre-req's? I personally tell students to take atleast 6 weeks to complete a course...expecially the Nursing Courses. This way they have a proficient understanding of the materails that they can apply to boards. And really you don't want to take and pay for a class twice....Once is plenty. As an FYI there are 7 Nursing courses plus the FCCA and the clinical. That's 9 Nursing courses, so the 10 month goal you are setting for yourself is really not reasonable. Especially since you will need approx 2-3 months of hard study for the clinical. Plus did you know that it takes about 2-3 months to even get a date for clinical after you give them the $1,000.00 deposit. Financing is a personal thing aka it's all you....You can go through Sallie Mae but that's also pay as you go and you will still have your Stafford loans to pay since the Excelsior College Distance ASN is not a full time student program. I am not trying to pop your bubble just put things in perspective. Getting your ASN from Excelsior is not going to be an ASAP thing but..... start plugging away at it now...course by course and you will get your RN. Good Luck!
Thanks for putting into perpective for me t-lo :) I've just heard of people doing it in 9 months and thought that was reasonable for me also. I have yet to apply to excelsior. I don't understand how some people say they're already taking classes/tests but have not applied to the school yet? Since schools are back in session today, I am planning on getting all my transcripts sent out so I know which classes they will accept. I would think all of them would be accepted.. I've had all the prerequisites my school required for the RN program done in the last year... And have taken extra college classes on the side. Maybe 15 months should be more of a goal for me if I don't have to take prerequisites. Thanks t-lo!

Zadia,
u have to do what works for you. i worked two days a week and studied for 10 tests.i wanted to hurry up and get it over with. started in april. cpne in december. 9 months total. graduate jan20th. and took time off in between. it can be done. good luck to you :)
Frankiebooboo....yes this is true if you only have to work 2 days a week and 10 courses yes it can be done in under a year. I totally agree.
Zadia, Student can do classes with out being enrolled. They can do the pre-req's and 3 Nursing courses Health Safety, Health Differences and Transitions and then pay out the big bucks for enrollment to complete the rest of the courses.

Do you have to have the whole fee paid for the CPNE before you're allowed to petition for your date? Or will they let you make payments while you're waiting for the actual date?
I don't know the exact amount but I believe it's $1,000.00 before they will even schedule you with a promise payment with a due date. EC does have a payment plan and it's my understanding that you have to be at a certain point before they schedule you. It's been a while since I looked at this information let me go see if I can find it and or even access it. Lunah or anyone with access feel free to jump in on this :)
Sorry guys and gals I don't have access to/ nor can I find specifically how much has to be paid in installments prior to EC scheduling a clinical date. Maybe someone can call EC and get the amount and then post it here for all. Be a student advocate and make the call
i used tthe payment plan 600down at the end of september. they called a week later with a date of dec2nd. but said i had to have it paid in full by nov1st. 30 days prior to cpne it has to be paid off. hope this helps
Thanks for all your replies... So 3 classes can be taken without even being enrolled into the college? That's pretty awesome!!! For those three classes.... D is the test taken online or at Pearson? So there are 10 different exams that have to be taken...health safety, health differences and transition? Are the books for those purchase through excelsior?? Thanks for your inputs!!

Hi! I just applied to EC and got in. I haven't enrolled as yet as I want to take the 2 tests that are available prior to enrollment: Health Safety and Transitions (as per the admissions dept). On the degree chart on EC's website, it says you have to be enrolled to take Differences and so on, BUT it also says with Differences (and only this exam) that it can be waived, just speak to your advisor about this. I took out a private loan (Sally Mae) and am waiting the response on how this works with not being enrolled and taking the 2 exams. I will update you all when I get this info. Also, when taking out a private loan, EC recommends only $7000 be loaned, but you can take more (as per my private loan provider). Hope this helps for now =)
