Offended by Prayer

I am curious to know if you would be offended, if at church on Sunday your Pastor got up and said a prayer for Church Mice?

I mean he prayed that the mice be strengthened and given the ability to carry out their mousey duties and to eventually render the Church unusable, so that the Parisheners would finally have to pony up the dough to pay for a new Church.

ok I am kidding here is the original post but hey if you are just now reading this thread there have been many twists and turns and I no longer say a prayer over the deceased and yes largely due to many of the points made in this thread. Also NO i would not be offended if anyone of any belief Satanist, TO Catholic said prayers or whipered chants or whatever in my ear that said it was and is an interesting thread but please read about 5-10 of the current posts prior to posting

Now The

ORIGNAL POST

I am curious to know if you would be offended, after death if someone were to say a prayer over you.

I would really like to hear from as many Agnostic or Atheist as possible.

I recently began saying a prayer over anyone that dies in my presence. Many times I do not know if the person had a religious preference or not. I am curious to know if people would be offended if they knew someone was going to pray over them when they die.

here is the prayer

Dear Lord not our will but yours. Into thine hands we commend the spirit of this peaceful child of God. Prepare a place for him/her Now in Your Heavenly Kingdom!
So okay how about this instead of jell-o-cubes in the stove top how about we use the pre-frozen jell-o to mix the stove top and then we can have the best of both of the worst of the worst of the worlds offerings to stuffing and dessert!!!

Now-back to topic....Nusemike-I really like the point you make about freedom of religion and what you said about "social problems " not really being problems but choices.... (PS- I used store bought bread cubes and doctored them up with seasonings, sauteed celery, onion and oysters0best stuffing ever according to my family.....Stove top makes a nice topping for a green salad if you are eating carbs)

Nursemike said "freedom from religion" in post #230, not "freedom of religion" and they are two very different things.

And Mike's theory about life is moral relativism. My mom's favorite saying was "Circumstances alter all cases". I reject that.

But back to the subject at hand, I've already mentioned I would not be offended by the fact that someone cared enough to pray for me.

And sad to say my 19 year old son LOVES Stove-Top Stuffing and instant mashed potatoes . .. that is what you get when you camp out in the woods all summer and cook for yourself. When I make real mashed potatoes, he says they taste funny.

And don't even get me started on SPAM . . .that is so offensive I can't even bear it.

Are you talking about jello cubes in the stove top? Can't say as how I think that would be tasty, but OTOH, it probably isn't that much different than mixing stuffing with cranberry sauce, as I do in my day after Thanksgiving sandwich, which I will be partaking of for lunch in a mere 4 hours and 51 minutes. What flavor of jello will you be using for this family tradition?

Lime-green of course! I'm thinking of a jello mold--- you know, the jello with chunks of stuff suspended... (Jello with Stove top suspended chunks--- yummy) How do they do that with Jello? It's a miracle! Hey, it might be pretty tasty on that left over sandwich of yours.

I think this exact concoction came up on my dysphasic patients tray for lunch today.

I prefer a more "free-flow" of ideas... I too find this thread enlightening and interesting. But, I was "serious" once and I didn't like it much.... Sorry for dececrating this thread..... on second thought... no I'm not sorry... I find the art of comedic (spell?) banter quite entertaining as well.

This is an interesting thread and the banter between folks is a good thing.

Never take yourself so seriously that you can't laugh.

well, then.you should have had some of my homemade stuffing-and home made cranberrry orange relish..No jello or stovetop on my table and you would have loved it.......... Actually if you review the First ammendment and also see how it as been interpreted historically you'll see that it means both.....as for "moral relativism" you say that like it's a bad thing...Where is that long list that tells us exactly what is "moral" in today's world? And how did a select group of people come into possession of that knowledge and in your view does it really mean that every other culture in the world is doomed? I know all about the Ten commandments but I also have read "an eye for an eye" so it is all really a matter of interpretation...The Bible, the Constitution-we can all put our own spin on it can;t we? And just siding with the "moral majority" does not make you right...Didn't the Nazi party consider themselves the "moral majority" for a time?

Are they really? How can you be free to practice your own religion if you are not free from someone else's religion? It doesn't seem to be that you can have one without the other.

Thank you I got an actual out loud laugh out of this one.

If you are not interested in this discussion you can always choose to skip the thread-since you returned from your "hiatus" I thought you were only going to participate in "lighthearted" threads and stay away from the debating in the more controversial ones.I find this thread enlightening and I would enjoy it more if it kept flowing nicely

Well being that I am the OP I feel that I may take the banter in any direction I choose, and My self imposed Hiatus was possibly a paranoid reaction or as I believe Scrooge said it may be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard etc. In any event I revisited the thread and posted "The End." Then

Oh why oh why did this need to be resurrected????.
after a quite lengthy post on the moral majority which I won't quote here as it has been quoted plenty. I returned and began an alternate question with a Thanksgiving spirit in mind Who would be offended by Stove Top...which brings us back to point.

I as well find the witty banter refreshing and posted a while back that I was going to rewrite my prayer and attempt to be non-secular as it were and posted it. Now in the light of the continued discussion I will just say I have rewritten the prayer once again.

Dear omnipresent forces of nature please reveal your graciousness to all beings of the planet and make all aware that Stove Top is not a natural food group and will not be accepted as a substiute during Holidays! In nature's name I pray!
