OBRA

Resident had a QRTLY assessment due 3/15, and was DRA on 3/5 and came back 3/12 should I keep the ARD for QRTLY as 3/15 ? I would end up with look back period of only 4 days.

The RAI only addresses a situation when the MDS is due during the resident’s absence you are allowed to reschedule the ARD up to 14 days on reentry. Since the resident was in the facility on day 92 you are technically required to do the MDS, irregardless of look back days.

I would like to believe the rule’s intent applies to both situations but without specificity I will not risk a debate with a surveyor.

On the other hand, doing the MDS as originally scheduled, may allow you to capture a higher case mix RUG, e.g. IV hydration in hospital.

Hi Talino the same patient came back from hospital under hospice so I opened significant assessment. However BIMS interview was not completed many time we attempted to interview the patient but each time patient was asleep so CO500 should be coded 99 right?

That is correct. Item C0100 must be coded 1, Yes, and the standard
“no information” code (a dash “-”) entered in the resident interview items. So C0500 = 99.

Just a precaution - Staff must be able to provide the most conducive conditions to conduct interviews whenever a resident has the capacity. Being asleep at time of interview may not be a desirable reason to put the interview aside. During a 24 hour period, a nurse can perform the BIMS when the resident is awake.

Since the SCSA overrides the Quarterly, your ARD may now be adjusted, provided the SCSA MDS is completed in 14 days (Z0500).
