It has only been 5 weeks into the nursing program and my blood pressure is rising. MY usual BP is under 120/80. 1st week in the program it went to 130/84. Yesterday 148/100. I can only think that it is the stress of the nursing program. I've cut my salt intake to almost nothing. My BP goes down on the weekend to almost normal values. I have to admit, I find nursing school stressful and honestly, I am not loving it. Still, I have never had this happen before.
Anyone else having this problem?

I get stress-related illnesses---IBS and my fibromyalgia flares when I get too stressed. The latest is muscle-tension headaches that can last for weeks and bring me to tears. My doctor advised me to lose all the extra stress that I could and to take up yoga. Well, I quit my second job (waht was I thinking, two jobs AND nursing school! LOL) but I haven't had time for the yoga.
I started to look at things differently too. One day at a time, and also I have decided that life is NOT all about nursing school. I actually got three fiction books out of the library and I AM READING THEM.
It is NOT easy to do what we are doing but there are ways to cope with it.
Why don't you pop into see your doc and talk to him or her? Maybe there will be more suggestions, or maybe they might want to look further into things.

Yep, I agree Nursing School too stressful. Actually I feel depressed at Nursing School. I guess its because I have had it tough ie: Teacher failing me on an exam and paper. Usually I feel depressed after clinical practicum and going back to Uni to face the bore and stress. Its not easy. I could have and sometimes think to have quit my degree and do something else. I am now close to the finish, one more subject to complete next year and on my way to being RN. Its amazing that I have developed alot of perserverance and determination to complete. I am not an academic person and nor will I ever be. I just to TRY to get it done.
The stress part is worse for me during practical exams and theoretical exams OR assignments which are so hard in interpreting the topic and finding out what the teachers want.
Best of luck Coopergirl, all i can say is take deep breaths and focus on the light at the end of the tunnel, your main goal. You will get through. If I can I surely think you can too :)

Although your studies may be contributing to this, it is a wise idea to see your physician as well.
Good luck

I think nursing school is making me sick too. I'm in my seventh week and ever since starting I've felt nauseous and vomit almost every morning after breakfast before leaving for school.

You're for sure not the only one out there. My biggest problem has been insomnia. Even though I am dead tired from school, work and life I can't seem to sleep at night. But I'm dealing with it, just resumed meditating and I'll see if that helps.
It's all about stress and its management. You have to find time for yourself in the midst of it all (why I am posting to a board @ 22:22) adn like my psych teacher says "Breathe, you can do this."
Good Luck!

LOL!! Are you sure you are not pregnant!?! Just kidding. I have been lurking on this website for 3 years now, and this is my very first post. How appropiate for me to post in the 'Nursing School is making me sick' forum. This is my first semester in nursing school, and I am not enjoying ANY of it. Doesn't matter though, I will graduate May 2007.
Hang in there!

Hey Y'all
Nursing school is 90% INDOCTRINATION (of attitudes and anxieties) and 10%
Education (of information).
Papaw John
(and indoctrination is NOT a bad thing--you are joining Florence and other Nurses who went before you--how else are you 'sposed to know how to think about what you know?)

I hated practically every day of nursing school and it's a good thing I didn't check my blood pressure. You have to decide is it school you hate, or nursing. Could be this is not your heart's desire.
Even though I worked full time and went to nursing school, I still made time to jog every other day. It was just a priority along with work and school and it made all the difference to me in keeping stress at bay. I had a walkman cassette player (remember those?) and listened to Christian music and prayed.
But only you can decide what stress reduction techniques. I recommend aerobics, yoga, meditation and such. Good luck to you. Nursing school sucks.
A trip to the md for advice wouldn't be a bad idea either. I check my BP regularly and if I'm stressed about it being high, sure enough it's high.
thanks for the input.
