Nursing School Concerns

Published

Hello there guys! I'm new to the site and I registered to help get a question answered. I am very interested in attending nursing school. I realize it is competitive and I am building a very good foundation with grades. I have been taking classes online at Columbia College since the summer and so far have all A's. I have been trying to take classes that will likely apply to nursing reqs such as two Psychs, Eng, and some things that I want to study personally.

As I said, I have all A's so far in 5 classes. My concern is that I had not so great grades in high school. My high school had a very brutal grading scale where a 93% was considered a B+ and later in my first try at community college I only stayed one semester and got two C's and a B. My high school GPA was roughly a C to C+

My question is when I have a nice set of Prereqs under my belt, will all these shortcomings come back to haunt me or will my more recent work count more?

Thanks for any help and any advice would be greatly followed!

You need to figure out what the pre-reqs are for the school that you plan on attending. I've never heard of a program looking at your high school grades, only that you have a diploma or GED.

I don't think your high school grades will matter much since you have college courses with grades for them to look at. Just be aware that nursing programs usually do have strict grading scales...a 93 was a B in my program, and you had to repeat a course if your final grade was below an 80. Good luck with your decision!

And make sure that your online classes transfer to the programs you are applying too.

It honestly depends on the school you're planning on attending. Each school is different. I actually dropped out of high school and got my GED due to a learning disability and lack of support as a teen. I have a 4.0 GPA in college, about 25 credit hours completed. My ACT score was 26. I applied for the nursing program December 17, 2013 and received my acceptance letter February 7, 2014. Some people are on a waitlist for over 3 years for this program. Stay positive and build relationships with your advisors. They can give you a wealth of knowledge and they are there to help you succeed. Good luck!!

Out of the 10 schools I applied to, not one asked for my high school transcripts or GPA. As long as you have your general ed and prereqs done, that should be all they need (though there may be some schools out there that somehow do want that info).

Keep getting those As. I'm sure you've heard already that nursing school is extremely competitive, so the higher your grades, the better your chances of getting in.

Thank you for the great answers! I was hoping my past would not plague me too much. I think a lot of us had difficulty with high school. I personally was just very immature at the time and wanted to get out. I'm doing my best now and really hope to make it one day. Thanks for the support.

I was so done with school by the time I got to high school. My grades were not that great. My school asks for high school transcripts but they just look over them. They don't count towards anything. Find a school you want to apply to and look at what their requirements are. Make sure the school you are taking classes at will transfer, otherwise you just wasted a whole lot of money and your A's mean nothing which would be a shame. Keep up the hard work!!!
