Nursing Program Waiting List?

Published

I'm from Arizona....and the community colleges (and universities) here all have long waiting lists for the nursing programs. I've been waiting two semesters already and they're telling me I might have to wait one more (I'd be getting in for the Spring 09 semester). And that sucks. Its a first come, first serve basis.

My dad is asking me to look into other options....in other locations....which means by him, and he lives in Frisco.

So, I'm wondering if there are waiting lists for the 2 year degree programs in the area. From what I've read from other posts, it sounds like Texas is more based on merit, and unfortunately that's probably not great for me because I got a little lazy with my school work during pre-reqs. Is it worth it for me to even consider? I don't even know if all my pre-reqs would transfer or if I'd need to take more.

At this point, I'm thinking it's not worth it. But I guess I need to tell my dad something and least show him that I've looked into my options.

If you're willing to pay a whole lot of money for a trade school RN program, there are ways of getting around lotteries, waiting lists, and point systems.

I'm basically in the same boat! I lived in TX and 2 months ago moved to CO. There is a waiting list everywhere here! I found a private school with no waiting list but its gunna cost 36,000 and its not even accredited. I'm feeling like I need to go back home as well. I also didnt do so good with my pre-reqs so keep me posted on what you find out! Thanks

Im not sure what you should do in your situation but heres a little advice... Lots of schools here are based on merit and people make them out to be harder to get into than they really are. I attend North Lake College and even the school counselors make it very discouraging. In fact, the person I talked to told me that if I wanted a BSN, not to even waste time with their school because it was to hard to get into...WRONG

My teacher is part of the nursing program and he told me that this semester people got in with a 3.59 GPA. Thats an 86 average grade..thats not to bad. Last semester people got in with as low as a 3.2 GPA. Also, all 20 or so people that applied late for this semester were accepted into the program.

So again, Im not sure what you should do, but dont let the hype fool you....you dont need a 4.0 to be considered...it def helps, but its not mandatory.

Austin Community College pretty much has no list anymore...there are three programs: traditional, online, and a hybrid (part online/part onsite). The cost from pre-reqs to grad is between $5K-6K. It is a good school, but is pretty tough. Historically the classes end with about 75% of the people it started with. (Not a proven fact- just going by what I've seen and my friends in the program before and after me have seen).

Let me know if you need anymore info. I am the ADN Student Association president.

*edited to say that the GPA requirement is 2.7

I live in Collin County (Dallas suburbs) and am now in my 2nd semester of the ADN program at Collin County Community College. It took me 3 tries to get into the program with their point system. The best you can do is 16 points and I had 14. Pre-requisite courses are A&P I & II, Microbiology, & Statistics. You can get a max of 6 points on the PSB entrance exam. They take applications in Spring & Fall now. Hope this helps.

Do you know what the cutoff is for Collin County? I have 13 points after taking the PSB and am anxiously awaiting my letter. I just wonder if 13 is enough.

Sunflowerttu - that will depend on how many people that are offered a position decide not to take it - maybe they choose another college or whatever - but if you're on the waiting list, Dr. Ard will call and offer you a spot when they get to your name. Good luck!

Longlegs-Thank you for your quick reply. I appreciate the info!

Hi long legs!

Did you have 14 points all three times you applied? Or did you finally get in with 14 points? I have 14 points now and am waiting to find out if I get in for the fall. I do not want to retake any classes :-)

Thanks in advance!

If you're willing to do a LVN program first, and then later bridge over...North Central Texas Collge has an LVN program and you get in based upon your Nursing Entrance Test scores only. There is a campus in Corinth, Gainesville, and Bowie. So all you would have to do is study up for the NET!!!! No prereqs, prior course work helps or hurts your chances of getting in! Hope this helps :)

I have one semester left at my local CC in Salt Lake City. I waited 2 years, but was scheduled to wait for 3.5. They are now scheduling people for Fall 2014!!!! Crazy. People always drop off of the list though and you move up. I would just stay in school while you wait and work towards any other classes you will need to finish you BSN so you can get right into the rn-bsn when you graduate. Anyways this seems to be a problem around the country.
